Description: This film "New Horizons: The Taylor Wine Story" was apparently one in a series featuring actor E.G. Marshall as host. The future-looking episode offers a profile of the Taylor Wine family; its history and fight for dominance in the alcoholic beverage arena. Taylor Wine was established in Hammondsport, New York in 1880 by Walter Stephenson Taylor. Walter began with a commercial grape juice company in the New York Finger Lakes region. Two years following, wine production was added and by the 1920's Taylor Wine was firmly established in the American wine industry. Walters’s three sons successfully guided the company through the prohibition period. The company went public in the 1960’s. They achieved a foothold as the most important winery in the north east and by the 1970’s and 1980’s no wino went without a bottle in their cabinet. In 1977, Coca Cola bought the company. A book titled ‘Over a Barrel: the Rise and Fall of New York’s Taylor Wine Company" by Thomas Pellechia details the company’s horrific demise in the mid-1990s. E. G. Marshall appears with a film reel in hand (:21). Darren McGavin (:53); the prominent American actor announces himself as the host of the show. A reenactment of the start of the winery follows (1:37). The winery follows (2:52). Russell B. Douglas; wine and spirits educator and representative of Taylor Wines (3:00) sits with Darren. The pair discuss the increase of wine consumption in the American society (3:34). He also notes the increased rates of travel among older and younger Americans (4:01). They cite notes from a Bank of America survey (5:15) over alcohol consumption in 1980. Darren questions Taylor Wine company's ability to meet the new demand (5:45). Employees of the winery prune vines in the bitter snow (6:24). Modern machinery runs over the groves (6:47). Hands move dirt around new vines stuck in the land (6:52). A Sunday harvest mass inaugurates the start of the harvest season in the fall (7:11). Farm hands start picking (8:10). Mechanized power pulls grapes from the vines with ease (8:49). [Music] thank you I'm EG Marshall these are hungry computers hungry for information to measure progress in our world We Gather this information from our nation's primary Financial sources the New York Times Wall Street Journal Standard and poor and you issue Outlook when we feed this data to the computers they are programmed to select our guests the dedicated men who developed revolutionary Concepts to create New Horizons thank you EG I'm Darren McGavin your guide to New Horizons one of man's earliest Pleasures has been the enjoyment of wine this dates back to our earliest historical record the Bible it speaks of wine no less than 365 times wine is a Heritage that has retained its pleasurable image throughout these many many centuries it has become a tradition throughout most of the world and in its ever-growing uses it is as important part of today's modern living this increased popularity of wine has opened up New Horizons almost a century ago a far-sighted Vision was born in the mind of a hard-working man who became one of the pioneers of a great industry [Music] Halsey Valley in Upstate New York 1878 a hard-working Cooper Walter Taylor by name felt bigger things in store than the fashioning of butter churns and barrels kids surrounding Keuka Lake fired his imagination [Music] and so in the early spring of 1879 he packed his belongings and arrived at hammondsport part of the vineyard country here lies my future Mr Taylor said to himself as he left the train with his savings he purchased a seven acre Vineyard in hammondsport he worked harder than he ever did as a Cooper planting harvesting and producing wines [Music] the impressive site however is the Taylor Winery the Taylor wine company is one of the oldest most respected wine producers in the United States Russell B Douglas vice president for marketing and a director of that company is regarded as the most knowledgeable man who possesses a wealth of experience in All Phases of the wine industry Mr Douglas looking through the wine industry's consumer statistics and particularly Taylor Wine's annual report I see a remarkable growth during the last decade now tell me what is the reason for this spectacular growth in the American wine industry well I think there are several factors involved one reason is the significant rise in the average American standard of living which has resulted in the increased income and a great deal more Leisure Time each year we find now more and more Americans are visiting Europe and it would be pretty difficult even if you tried to escape wine surface any place in Europe then two we have a great many of our young people are traveling to Europe these days and they too are subject to the same type of wine service we have a large complement of U.S military forces many of our men in government service and in foreign department and our U.S embassies all of these people living abroad have great exposure to wine ultimately many of them are transferred home and they bring their wine drinking habits with them fortunately and young people young adults today are already a very significant part of our total population it's estimated that by 1980 to some 40 million or roughly about 30 percent of the total adult population of our country perhaps one of the most encouraging factors is the much greater interest today that we see in dinner wines and champagnes and if there are these two segments of our industry actually present the best potential for future growth the Bank of America recently completed a survey in the wine industry and they projected consumption going up from 235 million gallons to 400 million gallons in 1980 now tell me Mr Douglas with this tremendous projection what is Taylor doing to keep up with this demand well we're constantly adding a more acreage to our Vineyards and getting our uh more than 250 grape Growers from whom we also buy grapes in our area and to do the same we have to continue with new buildings and equipment to provide adequate increase to Wine storage and warehousing and we often hear it said that a housewife's work is never done and this is certainly true in our our business it's a 365 day a year and around the clock it doesn't seem to make any difference whether it's a spring summer fall or all during the winter months [Music] even in the bitter winter cold pruning The Vines is a daily chore correct pruning will ensure an abundant crop next fall [Music] the spring is perhaps the most hectic of all seasons for the winter new Vines must be planted and the new growth checked and corrected for nature to perform its miracle [Music] a young blossoming Grace ripening through the summer [Music] early September the harvest season is officially inaugurated with the traditional Sunday Harvest Mass oh Lord we are gathered together here amidst the beauty of thy created world we have come to offer thanks for the Bounty of the Harvest of the land for the fruits of the field and we offer this thanks to thee in knowledge of our stewardship as Servants of all that thou has created in this world and put here for our creative use we ask that we may have thy continued blessings on us and on our endeavors in the name of thy son who came among us as one whose service our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ amen [Music] after a solemn Sunday the picking starts bright and early Monday morning the sun ripened grapes must be harvested within a seven to eight week period before the frost sets in thank you due to the extent of a Taylor Vineyards and The Limited supply of labor in the region a mechanized Harvester is employed this combination of manual and mechanized power enables Taylor to harvest the grapes at their peak of perfection the mechanized Harvester straddles The Vines and shakes The Ripe grapes loose from The Vines the grapes are then collected by the Harvester is specially constructed so as to straddle even the tallest Vines [Music] the fresh grapes are carted to the winery for the first of many steps in their gradual conversion to wine the freshly harvested grapes are emptied onto conveyor belts [Music] the grapes are crushed and pressed the juice is purified by a series of filters and aged in these seasoned Oak castes during the aging process laboratory technicians take periodic samples for testing from bats and casks that have a combined 12 million gallon capacity foreign [Music] properly aged the wine flows through sanitary Pyrex and stainless steel tubes to the filling line each planter Oak Cask is directly connected to this tube Network encompassing 19 connecting and interconnected buildings thank you [Music] [Applause] thank you foreign [Music] filling machines is presently dispensing Lake Country pink a very popular dinner wine [Music] [Music] this machine an integral part of the filling line places an airtight closure on the bottle [Music] [Applause] as a bottle travels on the line the front and back labels are applied simultaneously then a protective and attractive foil sleeve is fitted over the neck of the bottle each bottle must pass the watchful eyes of an inspector after they pass inspection they are automatically packed for shipment foreign hesitancy about the serving of wine and the part of many Americans simply because of the mystical protocol that seems to surround it yes sir you call it protocol I call it there's too much formality been associated with the serving of wine in our country we feel this idea that only a white dinner wine can be served with fish or foul and a red dinner wine with State Google speed through the heartier foods and that you have to have 20 glasses of different sizes and shapes we think is a lot of nonsense an estate dinner we think that formality probably makes good sense but in the relaxed atmosphere of your home entertaining let's keep it simple we recommend an all-purpose eight ounce glass which can be obtained practically at any store who handles glassware we say uncomplicate wine and recommend that you people do the thing it does I understand a large part of the Taylor Winery is devoted to Champaign making when visitors go through our Winery they often say at the end of the tour when I have seen the way you produce this fine champagne I Marvel at the fact that you can sell it as reasonably as you do may I show you Taylor champagne is fermented in the bottle this process requires many months of Aging the bottles are placed neck down and hand turned daily the hand turning makes all natural sediments settle to the neck of the bottle this is called riddling bottles leave the riddling racks after numerous weeks of daily hand turning they are now in for a truly chilling Adventure for they must travel neck down through this chilling machine during that time an ice plug has formed and has now collected all sediment [Applause] pressure which has built up internally the ice plug is blown out as the bottle is uncapped this is called this gorging the next step in producing champagne is the dosage dispenser hear the champagne in each bottle is brought up to the proper level of fill next the bottles are corked [Music] as the bottles pass the cork is forced into the bottle instantly expanding once inside the neck the wire hood is then placed over the Cork and then Twisted tightly around the bottleneck by this machine champagne will then be returned to storage for additional aging [Music] to extensive aging the mature Champagnes are now ready for the packaging line a special attachment gently guides the bottles through the labeling machine [Music] the gold foil covering the wire hood is hand applied with great care This lends that festive dignity traditionally associated with a fine champagne champagne rules Taylor's sparkling burgundy is simultaneously packaged on another packaging line the steps and processes for Taylor's New York State Champagnes are identical they are bottle fermented hand riddled and discouraged be it Royal dry brute pink or sparkling burgundy the Taylor wine company has retained indispensable old world quality methods and added the most up-to-date ingenious packaging methods fine combination to keep this company the quality leader in their industry [Music] recently I've heard about a something or other call cold dark now what is that well the stories about this product are really too numerous to mention but it actually had its origin in Germany many many years ago and their name for it was calte Entei if you don't mind my or German under our federal regulations in this country it must be a blend of white champagne and champagne roof now incidentally champagne rules in this country don't tell me much better known as sparkling burgundy I knew it and this is called duck and that is called duck well I'm looking forward to it thank you goodbye
