Complete Record: The coup d’etat of 1799 becomes a focus for examining the timeless problem of freedom versus stability. Napoleon has left his battered troops in Egypt and makes his way through a divided France, testing his popularity. In Paris he forms an uneasy alliance with Sieyes to overthrow the weak, corrupt Directory and thereby save France from the extremes of Monarchism and Jacobinism.
