Describes the remnants of the complex of temples and monasteries of the ancient Buddhist university of Nalanda, which flourished for a thousand years from the fourth century, A D. gives an account of the scholastic activities of the university and the intellectual catholicity that prevailed at Nalanda. The ruins are located fifty-five miles from Patna, the capital of the Indian state of Bihar.
