Description: Teaching Film Custodians release of a Cavalcade of America television series episode, "Mountain Man" (season 3, episode 5), which originally aired on November 16, 1954 on ABC-TV. Relates the story of James Ohio Pattie, the first American to write an account of a visit to California when it was a Mexican colony. Pattie, with a party of American hunters and trappers, is captured by Mexican soldiers and brought as a prisoner to San Diego for entering California without authorization. During his imprisonment in 1828 a smallpox epidemic threatens the city. Pattie's knowledge of inoculation saves many lives and averts an epidemic.
