[Music] always on the go so much going on at school and after scarcely a dull moment in your busy lives but having a few of your own own crowd in for something good to eat or for a meal you cook yourselves is always a very special occasion maybe it's someone's birthday maybe it's a pleasant way to earn Scout honors or maybe it's just a get together to try out some new records in any event have you noticed that good food always helps to make the party a success of course mother very often helps out with the planning of what she'll have to eat and how much you'll want sometimes she or dad even get the groceries for you when they do the regular shopping but more and more young people are beginning to do all these things for themselves and for their families it's a good idea it gives you a feeling of accomplishment and it helps to prepare you for the years to come it gives you a stake in the future and it can be fun it's probably in grade school that you begin eating on your own as you grow into high school you have a wider variety to choose from you probably find the plate lunch a good buy because it gives you you more food for your money than if you bought each item separately as you continue to grow you find yourself eating out more often maybe you're not quite ready for this but you will be soon more decisions to make about food and food prices and here it can really become complicated until you know what kind of a budget you're on for the evening and so on into the Misty future someday somewhere but surely you say this is no time to be thinking of food realistically it is for as all young couples will tell you it really stretches the paycheck to buy all the things they want for their dream home and eat too realistically about 1/4 of the average family income must be spent for food so you can see why it's important for all of us to try to get more food for our money and why it's not too soon for you to begin learning about it as mother will tell you all this begins in your own kitchen at home checking supplies on hand so as to include them in menu planning and avoid waste mother plans meals for at least one day as a whole or better still for two or 3 days at a time thus saving money and keeping Variety in each day's meal now most nutritionists agree that for good nutrition about 1/4 of the daily food budget should go for milk and milk products these should include at least three glasses of fresh pasteurized milk a piece for each of the children every day and at least a pint a piece for the adults in the family some of this might be taken on hot or cold cereals on fruits or puddings as cheese snacks or cottage cheese or in ice cream most of these can be delivered to your door by your regular Milkman or you can get them at your store another 1/4 of your food budget should go for meat and other protein foods in most markets you'll find a variety of kinds and cuts and prices so here are some things to remember the thriftier cuts of meat are just as nourishing as the more expensive items a roast gives you more meat for your money than the chops with the Frills there's just as much protein per pound in ground beef as there is in stake and it can be used in many tasty main dishes so whether you buy in the neighborhood Meat Market or in self-service places get acquainted with the attendant he or she can often give you a tip on a money-saving purchase for the day Thrifty Homemakers will plan to add variety and economy to their menus by serving other protein foods such as fish fresh frozen or canned poultry eggs cheese legumes with your dried beans and peas when you use legumes as a meat alternate add an extra glass of milk to the meal now for our third 1/4 of the food budget fruits and vegetables here again food processors and merchandisers bring us variety the year round A good rule to follow is to look for fresh fruits and vegetables in season because they have more flavor and are cheaper then but even in season it's wise to check the canned and Frozen varieties for comparative values for that important daily serving of citrus fruit you have wide choices for most processed foods today have like fresh flavor and food value for variety serve tomato juice canned or fr fresh tomatoes as they Supply similar vitamins to citrus fruits and in some Seasons may be lower in cost for that second serving of fruit there are the year round standbys of bananas and apples which come in handy after school in between meals and the seasons bring rhubarbs strawberries raspberries grapes to mention only a few serve two vegetables daily some raw inis crisp green salads some cook not too long so you won't lose their color and their nutritional value but remember to look into the processed varieties Frozen canned or dried so you may make the Best Buy of the day peas are a good example of this in season you have a choice of fresh frozen canned or dried all have about the same nutritional value so your taste and your pocketbook can side into the fourth quarter of your food budget fall the so-called energy foods fats starches cereals and sweets whole grain cereals are the main stay of the thriftiest budget because in addition to energy they add needed vitamins and minerals fats add some vitamins flavor and satiety value to the diet along with starches and sweets they're classed as energy foods calorie counters watch this group remember that ready prepared and ready to serve Foods cost more than the unprocessed kind but when time is more important than money you may want to use them for economy remember the flavor extenders using one of the cheaper cereals rice these young ladies of the home economics class are showing us how to extend the flavor of pork chops the same principle applies to making a stuffing of breadcrumbs to extend the flavor of these flank steaks hamburgers topped with brown slices of onion as the main dish of any meal this budget extender needs no apology the mild flavored cereal here is spaghetti served with meatballs an attractive dish that's easy on the budget too leftovers how about a meat pie topped with biscuits to extend the flavor we've talked about Flavor extenders now here here is a nourishment extender that tastes good and is low in cost concentrated milk products added to dishes like meatloaf scalloped potatoes and cornmeal muffins add protein and extra nourishment to these budget-wise dishes cream dishes offer another chance to turn small amounts of food into an attractive nourishing inexpensive main dish combining carrots macaroni cream sauce and fish here is an entree that is literally as pretty as a picture but this picture is not so pretty especially if it's your money that's being spent for food you'll be seeing this picture more often as you grow older that's why it's important now to start learning how to get more food for your money remember every time you raid the ice box successfully someone has planned every time good food food helps to make a party of success someone has planned every time you sit down to dinner with your family to relax and share the day successes and failures remember someone has planned why don't you start helping to plan at your house with your family now and for your own future [Music] oh [Music]
