Construction of the billion dollar plant was based on the discovery of a microscopic bit of the new element 94, Plutonium, in California by Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, now Chairman of the AEC, and others, in 1941, and on the demonstration of the first successful nuclear chain reaction in Chicago by Dr. Enrico Fermi and others, in 1942.
