Description: Mierle Ukeles, artist-in-residence at the New York City Department of Sanitation since 1979, is shown organizing a massive, collaborative work to turn the world's largest municipal landfill, on Staten Island, into a "social sculpture," in which what had been unwanted refuse is "healed" and returned to the community to be used in a new way. Includes clips of several of her earlier performance art pieces as she discusses her understanding of the relationship between "work" and "art."
