Description: Records the efforts of Mary Walker to be commissioned as an Army surgeon for the Union Army, her rejection, and her successful appeal to President Lincoln. Observes Miss Walker being dispatched as a civilian surgeon on contract to the Army of the West, her field hospital being captured by Confederate troops, and her remaining with her patients until they had all been successfully treated. Indicates that in 1866 Secretary of War Stanton conferred the Medal of Honor upon her for heroism under fire and devotion to duty.
