what do we have here the little engine that should he went so fast I think he pretty near left you you even missed him for a little while didn't you but he had to pull hard to pull this train up over the oh but I'm going into the story so they're not getting ahead of my story you know there is a wonderful story about the real engine that could it tells about the way that he got his name this is that a funny name the little engine that could what about would you like to hear the story about how he got his name well I think we have the book over here on the magic window toy shop and we reach over here and get it we might be able to have a story the little engine that could once there was a little freight train called the toy land special it's wasn't the longest train there ever was but I guess it was the happiest train there everywhere because all of its cars were full of nice things for boys and girls there were cars full of toy animal toys rat with long necks teddy bears with shortening baby giant pandas with almost no necks at all Tony I ins that roared when you squeeze their stomachs and there was even a toy baby elephant and then of course then work mama doll with blue eyes and curly yellow hair and Mama dolls with brown eyes and curly brown hair and there was a toy clown with a flag who kept running over the top of the little freight train from one car to the other waving his flag and keeping all the toys and dolls happy and laughing under cross for airplanes toy aeroplanes with toy aviators sitting in them there was just every other kind of thing that boys and girls could possibly wish for now the Toyland specials was carrying all of these wonderful toys from the town of hither where they were mainly to the town of yon where all the boys and girls lift because possibly wish came between hither and yon there was a very high mountain and of course the toy land special had to go right open or what did the toy land special started out on its journey first very slowly and then faster and faster until act it was going fast speed it's hot easily or shed lickety split lickety split which she put and the popular Tory clown waved his flag and kept all the other toys and dolls laughing and laughing and laughing yes the toy land special was about the happiest train there ever was now the toy line special was getting closer and closer to the high mountain between hither but the toys were made and yon were the boys and girls lives but all of a sudden when the train was only a short distance from the mountains something went wrong instead of chugging along happily it stopped running it stops Stockstill well the dolls and the toy stopped laughing and the clown stopped waving his flag and running backward and forward over the tops of the cars because it certainly looked as though they would never get to yawn to give the boys and girls their toys and dolls and they all were very discouraged all except the little clown suddenly the toy town had an idea there's more than one way of getting over the mountain from hither to yon aviators started the motors of your aeroplanes they will pick up the train and fly it across the mountain one by one the toy aviator started the motors of their airplane and then when they had got them all running they made thing goes faster and faster and slowly but surely the little train began to move and everyone cheered but the toy land special didn't fly up into the air at all the cheer that had grown up went down and the moment the train began to go up the mountain it began to slow down and the upper it went the down it slowed until at last it just stopped stopped still and they were all very discouraged all except the clown the clown saw that they had come to a switch where the another track ran in his attract the toy and special was on and coming toward them was a shiny new engine the clown said aha there are more than two ways of getting over the mountain from hither to yon what we need is an engine to pull us over maybe this is the engine that could the clown waved his flag and the shiny new engine stopped the clown bowed politely and said how do you do as you can see our toy land special is broken down and we're looking for an engine to switch over onto our track and pull us over the mountain to yawn are you the engine that could well the shiny new engine didn't answer I'm sure you're the engine that could little clown said and then the shiny new engine looked over his cowcatcher with his headlight I there was a nasty smear on the front of his big round boiler and he said I could if I would but I won't he drew himself up to the full height of a smokestack and said listen I'm a passenger engine and I have just pulled a fine passenger train over the mountain with my cars and you've ever dreamed of I pull the likes of you I guess not and with that you began to huff and puff and he started up and steamed off to the Roundhouse where Injuns live when they are not out pulling trains and the dolls and toys were all discouraged that is all except the clown the clown said listen there are more than three ways of getting over the mountain from hither to yawn and everybody said and then he said every able-bodied toy will now get out and push so the tour is an adult all tumbled out of the little cart and began to push the toy elephant put his head against the very last car and you push too they pushed and pushed and slowly the toy land special began to move put it move so slowly that at last they all stopped pushing it just wasn't any use and they were all terribly discouraged all except the North clown there are more than four ways of getting over the mountain to some hitherto yawn and coming toward them with a big strong engine and the clown said we are looking for an engine to pull us over the mountain and I'm sure you're the engine that could but the big strong engine said I could if I would but I won't I have just pulled as big strong train over the mountain with more big strong cars and you have ever dreamed us and a caboose yes I am a very important big strong engine indeed I will not pour the likes of you and waving a threat we are disdainfully at the toy land special he passed off angrily to the round you
