Description: Explains how to rough- and finish-machine a rectangular block of metal held in a vise mounted on the table of the machine. A block of cast iron is used to show how the work is held in the vise, the functions and use of parallels and the various ways in which the block is set in the vise for rough-machining all six surfaces. Shows techniques when taking finished cuts, including the use of telltale papers to assure correct seating of the piece on the parallels, the necessity for establishing a reference surface, and setting the piece so that all other surfaces will be machined from that surface.
