Live or Die?

Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. Includes national, local, and sports coverage. The broadcast script for this day did not survive. Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): California Republican gubernatorial primary candidate George Christopher greets a small crowd at an airfield. He is asked two questions. His answer to the first is that he is the only Republican candidate who can get Democrats to vote for him. The second is about the University of California and his position is that he does not favor any political interference and the Board of Regents should be able to establish and enforce their own rules. A political enquiry would only serve to embarrass the majority of students who are acting responsibly, and the small minority who are acting up would not care about being embarrassed. Segment 2 (sound): Group of nuns singing; monks and priests speaking to small crowd on hill (possibly Mount Hamilton). Cesar Chavez speaks to camera about a series of vigils being organized throughout the Southwest, and a real movement among farm workers to organize. There is a strike going on in Texas, and a group of farm workers outside Phoenix, Arizona, are also interested in organizing. The work being done in Delano is coming to fruition, and he hopes they will be able to sit down with the growers soon. Segment 3 (silent): Firefighters putting out a fire at night; body bags being carried out to ambulance (one of the men carrying the body bag has a cigarette in his mouth). Reel 2 (silent): Clarence McDowell trial, possibly sentencing hearing. Shots of the jury, attorneys, and defendant McDowell seated in courtroom, wearing a suit.
