Description: "Life of a Nomad People" (1949) is a black-and-white educational film made by Coronet Instructional Films. This film sheds light on the lives of nomadic people who travel from place to place, searching for food for their flock and water and food for their people. Specifically, this film takes a look at the life and customs of nomadic Amazigh/Berber people indigenous to North Africa as they travel through the Moroccan Sahara. It is interesting to note in this film some of the ways the presence of the French in Morocco impacted the customs and traditions of the nomadic people from using spoons to eat couscous instead of their hands and binoculars to look out into the vast desert landscape. The French protectorate in Morocco, also known as French Morocco, was the period of French colonial rule in Morocco between 1912 and 1956. At the center of Morocco’s independence movement were Amazigh tribes from across the country. Arid, desolate desert landscape (Moroccan Sahara); herd of camels in distance ushered by shepherds dressed in long robes and turbans riding on horseback, kids trail behind (0:08). Map of the world - narrator highlights regions where nomadic communities are prevalent: Arctic Tundra, Asian Steppe, Australia, North Africa (0:59). Close-up of North Africa, arrow points to dot in Sahara Desert in far eastern Morocco, western Algeria (1:22). "Sheikh" (Nomad leader) points to place to set up next camp, dry and bare area with shrubs for flocks to graze (1:25). Example of one of nomad family: mother, father, young daughter and son unloading a family tent from camel’s back, woman wears traditional Amazigh/ Berber dress (2:10). Close-up tent material made of cloth made from wool and goat hair (2:24). Women continue setting up tent while father and son oversee goats, sheep grazing (2:32). Father and son wear clothing to protect from sun - turban, Moroccan Berber cape ("bernute") (2:44). Mother and sister continue lacing tent together, wool carpets and other household items laid across ground (3:08). Mother pours out water from goat skin bag ("mashakali") (3:49). Brother and sister sit at water hole and refill the water bag (4:02). Mother sits on ground and uses hand to sift through couscous (fine semolina flour and national dish of Morocco) in shallow clay platter (4:20). Three men stand shoulder to shoulder and perform one of the five daily Muslim prayers facing east towards Mecca (4:29). The family gathers in the tent and sit on ground around communal plate for supper, important to note that this family uses spoon to eat while couscous is often eaten using ones right hand as the vessel/ utensil (4:41). Bonfire illuminates the faces of children sitting around bonfire listening to storyteller ("Hakawati") (5:00). Father and son head to grazing area to relieve shepherd of his post watching the livestock graze (5:30). Mother and daughter weave carpet in hand loom built into tent, use wool collected from sheep (5:56). Mother uses traditional stone hand-mill ("r’ha") to ground flour (6:19). Father and son stand at top of hill and use binoculars to look out into horizon, search for missing goat, son and another villager set off into desert to look for animal (6:47). Sheikh arrives on horseback and greets the shepherds, group must take down camp and move to another site (7:45). View of group "breaking camp," each family takes down their tents and loads items onto camel’s back (8:42). Group seen as small specks in distance walking further into desert (9:22).

foreign for our story of nomad people is a desert land a dry and Barren region moving toward us is a group of people and their livestock these people are no Wanderers who have no permanent homes they live under the Open Sky with their flocks but how do they live why do they move from place to place they have found that the land is not entirely Barren in places there are small shrubs and sparse grass enough to support sheep and goats on these flocks the nomads depend for meat milk and wool to find enough pastureage and water for the flocks the nomads keep moving from place to place people who follow this kind of wandering or nomadic life are found in various regions of the world the tundra lands of the Arctic the steplands and deserts of Central Asia the dry lands of Australia and the northern part of Africa these are regions where the climate is not suitable for the leader of these desert Nomads is called a Sheikh he decides where the group shall make their next camp the campsite will be near this Waterhole water is most important to the nomads in their flocks the place the Sheikh has chosen may look dry and bare but there are small shrubs at which the flocks can graze and so the Sheik gives the order make can't setting up camp is a job that these people have done many times over the Sheikh supervises the work for he has complete authority over the 30 people in his group let's meet one of the families in this group of Nomads Ali the boy and mimona his sister are helping their parents unload the family tent camels which are hearty and well suited to Desert life can carry heavy burdens the tent is made of cloth woven from wool and goat hair the tent poles are carried along too while the women busy themselves setting up the tents the men and boys look after the flocks of sheep and goats the animals are already finding shrubs on which to graze as a protection against the hot sun Ali and his father wear a head covering called a turban and each one wears a loose cloak called a bernutes a protective covering against the hot winds and blowing sand back at the camp Ali finds his mother and sister lacing the tent and he's just in time to lend a helping hand Ollie works on one end of the cloth while his sister mimona fastens the other end mimona skillfully pins two pieces of the tent together Ali unfolds one of the Woolen rugs that is part of the household goods belonging to the family carries all its possession blankets utensils some food and of course water the water is usually kept in a goat skin bag and when mother empties the water bag Ollie and Lamona know that they have another chore to do at the water hole near Camp they filled the Bay water is precious on the desert the lives of these people and of their flocks depend on these water holes which are few and far between while the children got the water mother prepares supper the main dish is called couscous a kind of flour paste Petty by the time father is finished with his evening prayers these people are mohammedans they prayer faces toward Mecca the holy city of their faith later the family is seated in their tent for supper of course there are no chairs they would be too bulky to carry from place to plates everyone sits on rugs or mats and shares the same dish of couscous after supper the children gather around the fire and listen to a retailer relate all Tales stories about their tribe and legends about great Heroes from generation to generation knowledge is passed on by Word of Mouth there are no books for these Nomad children here is a pattern of Life much like that of the wandering tribes of Biblical times the next morning soon after Sunrise the nomad camp is beginning to stir with activity with a light lunch of dates and bread Ali and his father are off for the day the shepherd who has watched the flocks all through the night is now relieved of his task from their sheep the nomads get wool which the women weave into cloth nimona and her mother weave their Woolen yarn on a hand Loom the loom is part of the tent frame and is small enough to be carried about with the tent some of the cloth that mother is weaving will be made into clothing or blankets some may be sold in the village at the edge of the desert grinding flour is another task the women do wheat bought in The Village's ground between two stones the women also gathered dry shrubs for fuel sometimes this daily routine of nomad life may be interrupted right now Ali and his father are looking for a baby goat that is missing from the flock the binoculars father is using are one of the few pieces of modern equipment he has father suggests a plan and another Shepherd and Ollie set off on the search left alone on the desert a young goat or lamb would soon die all he knows he must find the animal quickly Ali has found the goat he is a good shepherd and so day after day The Simple Life Goes On Ali and his father and the other Shepherds tend the flocks that are their livelihood and then one day the Sheik rides up to talk with the Shepherds with great respect each one greets the leader the Sheik has been looking for new pasturage for the flocks it is time he says to move on for most of the pastureage here is gone the flocks have eaten most of the shrubs in this area and so the decision is made to move the men bring the news to camp everyone must be told to begin when Ali's mother is told she sets to work at once the other families too begin to take down their tents the camels are brought in for loathing everyone knows what to do for breaking Camp is something that is done again and again down comes every tent in a little while everything is packed the camels are loaded the Shepherds begin to drive the plots the nomads are on the move somewhere in the vast desert they will find new pastureage and another water hole food and water for their flocks this is the pattern of nomad life moving grazing the fox and moving again this is the life of nomad people The Wanderers who live with their flocks under the Open Sky [Music]
