In the Rhone Valley, elaborate measures are taken to defend farmland from the eternal enemy, the Mistral wind. In the Midi section of France, however, people have a special fondness for this same wind that blows across the land. Whether loved or hated, the Mistral remains an inescapable part of many French lives. Ivens combines stark photography and the creative use of sound and music in this nonnarrated study.
