Summary: Stan Chambers reports from outside Los Angeles City Hall where ceremonies marking the 23rd annual celebration of Negro History Week, which would later become Black History Month, are underway. Mayor Sam Yorty delivers a speech in which he discusses how interest in Black history has grown since the early years of the program, and talks about how people of African ancestry were prominent among the founders of the city. Footage includes shots of attendees, including Los Angeles City Councilman Robert W. Lindsay.

ceremonies marking negro history week were held on the First Street steps of the Los Angeles City Hall today everyone stand please and remain standing until after the choir has sung lift every voice and sing this is the 23rd celebration of negro history week its theme African civilization and culture a worthy background exhibits concerts displays and discussions will be highlighted throughout the week at schools museums and churches in the Los Angeles area one of the highlights will be a coronation luncheon at The Ambassador Hotel Saturday afternoon when Miss negro history week will be honored from the City Hall Stan Chambers Channel 5 news reporting [Music] thank [Music] you [Music] [Music] the the is [Music] [Applause] [Music] Victory pram who was the initiator and the originator of the celebration here in Los Angeles is now president of America Study Club of time long before there was a general interest in negro history uh she started this program and she has perpetuated it during the days when it was much interest until today when interest is growing uh on the part of all people I think this right would agree that the fact that many of the founders of this city the original families were of African desent and that was a pretty well kept secret Mrs R until I became mayor and we dug that out and now I hope it is understood that Los Angeles started out as an integrated City and the people of African ancestry were very prominent among the founders of the city of Los [Applause] so in my administration of negro citizens like this is the 23rd celebration of negro history week its theme African civilization and culture a worthy background exhibits concerts displays and discussions will be highlighted throughout the week at schools museums and churches in the Los Angeles area highlight will be a coronation luncheon at The Ambassador Hotel Saturday afternoon when miss history week will be honored the City Hall St Chambers Channel 5 news report we have
