KTLA News: "Mayor Tom Bradley discusses ongoing transit strike and Proposition A" (1974)

[Mayor Tom Bradley over traffic noise] Well, the membership, the drivers will vote on Wednesday. Now, I fully expect they're going to approve that contract. It's a fair contract. Their leaders believe that. [Kids chatting in background] [Bradley] I think so and I believe that, [Bradley] following their vote, which will take place in the afternoon, that the following day the RTD board will approve it. [Bradley] The buses will be reconditioned. Should be on the road and rolling by Saturday. [Street noise, children chatting] [KTLA News Reporter, Jan Mitagawa] Mayor Bradley, now that the, ah, regarding the bus strike, now that the, [Mitagawa] union has tentatively agreed and it's going toward the, ah, the drivers vote. [Mitagawa] When do you expect the buses to go back on the road? [Mitagawa] Los Angeles. Of course, the bus strike has gone on for a terribly long length of time. [Mitagawa] They are facing the, ah, November bond issue and the, ah, mass transit bill. [Mitagawa] Ah, what do you say to them? Should they be, in, thinking about the strike, that is now almost over? [Bradley over children] We have asked that people make the distinction between this tragically long strike and the need for rapid transit. Most people have and I think they'll, they'll vote. They'll support Proposition A on November the 5th. We simply must act this year. It's now or never as far as rapid transit is concerned. And I think people will, understand that the strike really has nothing to do with that issue. It's separate and we've got to have passage of Proposition A. [Mitagawa] Turning back, one final question to the bus strike. Now that it is, it is almost over. [Mitagawa] What about safeguards to prevent a future strike? [Mitagawa] Will you be pressing for legislation to take some of the autonomy away from the RTD? Make it answerable to some county or local organization? [Bradley] Well they, again, the two issues are, are separate. [Bradley] Ah, management of RTD is one thing. The, [Bradley] ability to prevent a strike that affects the public health and welfare is quite another. [Bradley] And the legislature, I'm sure is going to take up both of those issues next year. I will be preparing some, ah, [Bradley] proposals to present to the legislature, to try to deal with both issues. [Mitagawa] What will those proposals encompass? [Bradley] I think that we've got to deal with the question of how we prevent work stoppages that, that affect the public health and the welfare. [Bradley] I think we also got to find a way of, of changing the structure, so that, [Bradley] Los Angeles, which is more directly affected by RTD has a little stronger voice and some more influence in the operation of that, ah, district.
