Summary: U.S. Marshals arrested Russell Means, a leader in the American Indian Movement (AIM), when a judge in South Dakota issued a bench warrant after Means failed to appear on time. Means had been out on bail after being charged for his role in the Native American occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota. Means' lawyer speaks to reporters about the events leading up to the arrest. Footage includes shots of Means being led through a hallway.

way at to my knowledge he tried to make arrangements to get back last evening but he could not do so because of trouble getting flights to Rapid City South Dakota why did he not try to get back this morning I don't know I think he made arrangements and this was probably the first flight that he could arrange for this 5:00 p.m flight the handc coming off gu out way keep it rolling man here comes Ed I didn't get in there [Music] it was a word involving Mr Means today uh Russell Means was arrested today by US Marshals on the basis of a bench warrant issued by a judge in South Dakota where the judge has apparently revoked his bail of $25,000 in cash that was posted even though Russell Means hadn't been given notice of his being required to be back there in time for him to get back there by the time the judge said he should be back there you said in court today that he actually was on his way back though that he had heard he was wanted and had a plane ticket in his pocket when he was arrested that is correct that is the information I have he has a ticket in his pocket and the US Marshall has it as part of his possessions and property uh to go back to South Dakota and he has that ticket in his pocket and yet they would not allow him to be released now on bail to go back as a as a free person what was he not on his way back yesterday we can go upstairs and ask the duty judge to counterman the order of magistrate tsapis uh the duty the Duty Criminal judge in this bill it's a form of appeal so to speak from the judge's denial of bail however being quite familiar with how Federal Criminal judges work the duty judge here undoubtedly will call the judge in South Dakota just as the magistrate did and he too will deny any opportunity to post bail in other words he'll be taken back by the marshals he will get free Transportation at US Government expense that is correct and uh is that the disposition of the whole case now at it's the disposition of the case at this time here in Los Angeles he will be going back to uh South Dakota I assume within three or 4 days L [Music] of
