Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Pickets outside the offices of San Jose Shopping News, who are accused to hiring non-union labor to work in the shop. "Marin News and Guide Typographical Union No. 21. UNFAIR No Contract for Union Conditions." Script reads, "Picket signs indicated the strike was also against a Marin County Shoppers' paper that is owned by the same group as the San Jose Shopping News. Reel 2: Segment 2 (sound): Interview with Roger Smith, one of the coordinators of the "Add-Center" narcotics treament house in Berkeley, who was in Los Gatos to speak to California Congress of Parents and Teachers. He's asked how big a problem drug use is among teenagers. He answers that he suspects it's many times more than that suspected by the police or general public. He suspects that drug use is very widespread among young people. Reporter asks, "What should a parent do if they think their youngster is on drugs?" Smith says what they should NOT do is become hysterical or moralistic. Most kids are knowledgeable about drugs, or think they are, and so offering advice or morals is just going to alienate kids. If a parent is a heavy drinker, and your kid uses marijuana, they have a good argument for using it. It's less harmful, less costly, does less damage to your internal organs. Reporter asks if parents should report their children to the police. Smith says it's hard to answer that, because once you're labeled as a drug user...On the topic of LSD, Smith says that they don't know a lot about LSD, but they know that some people aren't mentally sound enough to handle it. On the other hand, there have been reports that it's successful in treatment of alcoholism. The crux is the method of using... Reel 3: Segment 3 (sound, color): Footage of a new Allis-Chalmers experimental tractor, with voiceover: "This experimental tractor has been built to get reaction from farmers. The air-conditioned tractor cab has a stereo tape player, a two-way radio to keep in touch with home, a transistorized AM-FM radio, an electronic seed counter, and even closed-circuit television so the farmer can see the field behind him without turning around. With carpeting and lush upholstery, there's more comfort than the average living room in what's simply got to be the world's most attractive tractor." Segment 1 (silent + sound): Silent footage of the San Jose Junior Chamber of Commerce meeting inside what appears to be a restaurant. The wall is covered with Mercury News stories opposing the proposed Swift meat packing plant that had been proposed for San Jose. San Jose Assistant City Manager John Jerman and Swift attorney Al Ruffo are speakers. Following the presentation, the Jaycees voted unanimously to get Swift to renew its application. This is followed by a sound interview with the Jaycees' Lowell Young, who is asked why the Jaycees are getting involved. He says that they don't feel that the public has been given the full and honest facts about the plant. They feel that any industry offering the number of jobs and income that this plant would provide should be welcomed by San Jose. He downplays the threat of pollution to San Francisco Bay saying that it might pollute a little, but could be controlled eventually. Segment 3 (sound): Reporter Don McGaffin interviews people on the street about sex education in schools as the San Jose City Council decides whether to go ahead with their family planning program in San Jose schools. The first person answers that people aren't informed, they think that it's something out of Confidential magazine, but he's sure that it's very educational and nothing pornographic. The second person opines that sex education should be kept in the home and church. The third person says kids pick it up fast enough as it is - his daughter is in school and knows too much already, and she's only seven, so you can imagine by the time she's 10...the last interviewee, a woman, indicates that it should be taught in school because parents are out of touch with what's going on and don't know enough. Segment 2 (silent): Footage of two men sitting down at a table in Superior Courtroom No. 1, Judge Cassin presiding; followed by footage of people exiting the courtroom, filing into the corridor. Script reads, "The Earl Sears murder trial finally got underway late this afternoon...Sears and his attorney Ed Nino had just walked into court when Judge Cassin appeared on the bench. Juror James Cartoni of Sunnyvale called in with a serious case of intestinal flu. The judge adjourned court, then himself went to the Jury Commissioner's office to check for new panelists, as the 7-man, 5-woman panel filed out for a half hour coffee break...." Segment 1 (silent): Controlled residential burn in Campbell on Gillman Street near Campbell Avenue, a training exercise for the Campbell Fire Department. "Brown" and "Wixon" names can be seen on the firefighter uniforms. Segment 2 (silent): Footage of the San Francisco Warriors playing the Cincinnati Royals during National Basketball League exhibition season. "The San Francisco Warriors, with a new coach and several new men, have been doing well...During a double show Saturday night at the Cow Palace, the Warriors beat the Philadelphia 76ers by three aces, 122-119, and they schneidered the Cincinnati Royals 134-118 yesterday...Rick Barry was high roller for the Warriors Warriors against the 76ers with 35 points while Nate Thurmond ran a high string of 25 in the deal with the Royals..." Segment 4 (silent): Chamber of Judge George H. Barnett. Several men are seen holding a document, smiling and chatting, with one woman. Script reads, "Superior Court presiding judge Robert Peckham is flying back to Washington this evening. He's expected to be confirmed by the Senate as the county's first Federal Court judge. Taking his place as acting presiding judge is Judge George Barnett, who will become Peckham's successor as presiding judge for the year's duration. Judge Barnett performed one of his first official acts this afternoon, receiving the Grand Jury report on Parks and Recreation. It was presented by A. B. McSweeny, Committee Chairman. Foreman Joe Kirby and committee member Catherine Peck stood by to answer questions. The interim report urges that Skyline Highway be made a scenic highway, with frequent turnouts, scenic easements to preserve trees, and and a network of hiking and riding trails before the land becomes too commercialized..." Segment 3 (sound): Interviews with two women on the topic of Monterey $2.5 million municipal bond measure. Script reads, "The bonds require a 2/3 majority for passage, and they appear to have little opposition except from one group known as the Monterey City Taxpayers Association. They have been mailing literature opposing all seven of the ballot issues, and today we asked Mrs. Robert Carswell, secretary of the group, exactly why they are opposing the issue." Mrs. Carswell says that they are already taxed to death and cannot afford to own property if all of these bond issues pass. She is asked about criticisms that her group is anonymous because none of the letters have been signed ; she answers that it's not anonymous, and there's no reason for it to be anonymous, and she gives out their name and post office box. Reporter Dennis Rowedder then interviews Monterey Mayor Mrs. Minnie Coyle, who says that it's deplorable that people who have not studied the issues as thoroughly as the Planning Commission has are influencing the decisions.
