The company was founded in San Francisco in 1895 by Bernard Langendorf. The firm moved to San Jose in 1926 where it operated out of a small plant on Race Street. In 1952, the bakery moved headquarters to a plant at Seventh Street and Phelan Avenue. Family-owned and operated by Langendorf's sons, with plants from Los Angeles to Seattle, until 1964 when it was sold to American Bakeries, Inc.
