Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast, and can be obtained from History San Jose. Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): Members of the San Jose City Council and others, in small conference room. City Manager A. P. "Dutch" Hamann is interviewed about the proposed Swift meatpacking plant and a new rendering process that reduces or eliminates odors. He is asked if Swift plans to use this new process of rendering. Hamann explains how the rendering process works, how the after burner gets rid of the remaining odors. He is then asked what other industries are looking to come in to San Jose. He answers that it's mostly fabricators, not manufacturers, in other words, industries that assemble already made parts. He's asked if any of them are concerned about odors from a meatpacking plant, and Hamann quickly answers that they have no concerns. Segment 2 (silent): Shots of a car driving through flat Missouri countryside, seen from the driver's perspective. Cut to the interior of a Missouri Beef Packers Inc. slaughterhouse, where a visiting delegation from San Jose are shown beef carcasses. Script reads, "The latest delegation came to the Show Me State -- Missouri -- where the Missouri Meat Packers Company is using a new type of rendering process to cut down the smell...There are no other industries to speak of around the Missouri packing plant, which kills 1,500 cattle a day. There are no homes nearby or newspapers in search of a good neighbor. The plant is so remote that about half the San Jose delegation spent several hours Thursday afternoon criss-crossing the backroads of Missouri trying to find it...In short the Missouri plant has no one around to turn up their nose. Yet this plant has taken extensive measures to eliminate packing house odors. The measures have been successful...If Swift uses these new rendering techniques at its proposed San Jose plant, it will not create an odor problem for its industrial neighbors or for homeowners in Northern San Jose. The irony in this case is that it took a competitor of Swift to demonstrate what Swift says it will do in San Jose." Reel 2: Segment 1 (sound): College football coach discussing where they need to improve. "We don't think we've arrived as a team.." but he's optimistic about the season. The script references film of an interview with Brigham Young University publicist Dave Shulthess ahead of their game against Stanford. Segment 2 (silent): Short clip of the Metro A fashion show with a ballroom full of women around circular tables. Script reads, "San Jose's Metro A Association is promoting new styles in its eighth annual 'Desk Set' fashion show. The show is planned with the working girl in mind, and is in the middle of a three-day run at the St. Claire Hotel..." 9/23/66 F2 600; 9/23/66 G-H 600; 9/23/66 F2 600; 9/23/66 G-H 600
