Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. Includes national, local, and sports coverage. The broadcast script for this date has not survived. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Agricultural workers in a field of crops, picking up round fruit or vegetable and loading them into half barrels. The field is near a busy highway, likely southern Santa Clara County. Segment 2 (sound): Man in glasses being interviewed about negotiations with Santa Clara County nurses. "Well, if I were to use one word, I would say cordial. We were received very well, and there was an atmosphere of good will and good faith which pervaded." Reporter: "What will be the next step in these negotiations?" "Well, we've set up another meeting for August 12th. In the meantime, both sides are going to be doing their homework. That's about what it amounts to." Reporter: "Will the current negotiations that are going on in the San Francisco area have any effect upon local negotiations?" "Well, I'd be less than candid if I didn't admit that they would have an effect. But our approach to this problem is not to depend on what's happening elsewhere. But rather to come to an agreement here as the result of our negotiations concerning a problem here." Segment 3 (color, silent): Military funeral at a military cemetery on a hill, possibly the Golden Gate National Cemetery. Soldiers in dress uniform hold a folded flag above the casket as a priest conducts the ceremony, with mourners in attendance. Segment 4 (silent): Several hearses drive up to a church on a hill, where people are waiting on the steps. Reel 2 (sound): Alan Cranston, seated at a desk with flags behind him, and a desk microphone in front of him. "The evidence shows that the founder and undisputed leader of the John Birch Society , Robert Welch, has relied upon the professional writings and guidance of professional anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, and anti-Negro propagandists. He has pushed their writings, he has employed some of these people. The evidence shows that the committee of endorsers of the John Birch Society, a group of individuals selected because they would supposedly lend prestige and stature to the society, is composed of some people among them who have records of notorious affiliation with outright neo-fascist groups such as Gerald L. K. Smith's Christian Nationalist Crusade. The evidence also shows that right here in California, chapters, bookstores, spokesmen, literature of the John Birch Society is purveying anti-Catholic, anti-Negro and anti-Jewish material, spreading the totally absurd doctrine that Communism is synonymous with Jews, or with Catholics sometimes, or with Negros. My purpose in issuing this report [Report on the John Birch Society (Benjamin R. Epstein, Arnold Forster, 1966] has been to alert Americans, to suggest to them they look at the poisonous labels on the John Birch Society, like the skull and crossbones on a poisonous bottle, and that is my purpose, to tell good Americans everywhere, be watchful and beware. I'd be very happy to answer any [cut off]. Reel 3: Segment 1 (color, silent): Men putting together two long segments of pipe, welding together the seam, in a rural location. View from above of an industrial facility with multiple tall cylindrical tanks (?) and gas storage tanks. Men working a large wrench on a tall pipe. Appears to be a large oil drill taking samples. Segment 2 (color, silent): U.S. Army airplane landing on tarmac, likely a test plane. The small aircraft has a spoiler on the back, with landing gear that folds and bounces. View from inside the cockpit as the plane moves down the runway. Man with 16 mm camera capturing the scene. The plane comes to a stop, a man gives the thumbs-up. The plane then takes off. It appears to have two bombs attached to the bottom of it. 7/28/66 A-D 544; 7/28/66 E-F 545; 7/28/66 G-H 545; 7/28/66 A-D 544; 7/28/66 E-F 545; 7/28/66 G-H 545; 7/28/66 A-D 544; 7/28/66 E-F 545; 7/28/66 G-H 545 Sound starts at 00:00:59 and cuts out at 00:02:01; footage has abrupt start and end.¶Footage has abrupt start and end.¶Footage has abrupt start and end.
