Most village women have little choice but enter into arranged marriages that restrict them to child bearing and domestic work. However, the feelings of affection developed from working and living together, combined with the memories of close family ties to distant kin provided by dowry embroidery, offer the women an opportunity for a tolerable and even joyous life.
