Description: The kakapo, the largest member of the parrot family, lives only in the rainforests of New Zealand. Because there were no predators, the bird lost its ability to fly. After man arrived and introduced predators, the kakapo diminshed almost to extinction. This film documents efforts to locate, photograph and save this rare, endearing parrot. In one sequence, a male kakapo inflates internal air sacs to sing a deep-toned love song, but there are no females to respond to this ancient courtship ritual. At the conclusion of the film, conservationists discover a female kakapo, the first to be seen in seventy years.
