JOE'S TOUR NEW YORK

foreign [Music] our friend Jones Wiki had the complete weekend planned polish's dinner at the state casino Joe and his date Karen took Vicki and I on a subway ride to the little theater off Times Square the nationally syndicated Merv Griffin show was videotaped here Arthur Treacher starts the show [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] you have to applaud just line up for a quick kiss okay one of the pages on the Merv Griffin Show noticed me shooting movies and asked me to stop but after the Griffin show we walked around Times Square formerly the New York Times building and now the Allied chemical building is famous for ushering in the new year every December 31st the money that pays the electric bill for these signs would make one rather wealthy [Music] Saturday afternoon while Vicki shopped Joe took me sightseeing first on the agenda was the United Nations building and right beside it the Carson Kennedy building a luxurious apartment building where Johnny Carson and Bobby Kennedy live one of the newest architectural additions to the big city is the new Madison Square Gardens building a large round structure housing a theater sports arena and various athletic facilities and certainly a great Improvement to the old Gardens [Music] the crowd of Shoppers around Macy's and Gimbels was just like the Christmas rush back home I asked Joe what you could see from the top of the Empire State Building he said nothing but from the open Observatory here on the 86th floor you get almost on a clear day see forever you can actually see ships 40 miles at Sea this northeast view shows the Chrysler Pan Am and United Nations buildings [Music] here you can see the Wall Street area and southern end of Manhattan on the right in the distance the Statue of Liberty sixteen thousand persons work in various offices within the Empire State Building 8 million TV sets in a four-state area receive programs from these antennas 16 floors higher is the 102nd floor enclosed Observatory the world's tallest building 1472 feet presents a spectacular view up to 80 miles into New Jersey Pennsylvania Connecticut and Massachusetts as well as New York on the other side of the Hudson river is New Jersey and turning North we can see the Lincoln Tunnel the Port Authority Bus Terminal the Times Square and Theater District and eventually the George Washington Bridge in Central Park and another view of the new Madison Square Gardens over a million and a half visitors annually ride the 72 elevators that service the building if all the elevators were to stop running you could count the 1860 Steps From the street level to the 102nd floor sixty thousand tons of steel went into the building which is estimated to weigh 365 000 tons or 14 tons per occupant touring ABC TV we saw the control room receiving the Olympics from Grenoble France via satellite and then we moved to another control room to watch the production Personnel put Wide World of Sports together and feed it down the network at the same time now this control area and some of the others were quite new and impressive but the building itself was old and a little disappointing at one time it apparently was a livery stable and Warehouse Sunday afternoon we went to the Museum of Natural History where if you had the time you could spend days looking at the many exhibits of wild animals such as these from Africa I wonder who is in charge of shining up this statue Joe Tina and Vicki tried to imagine the life of a caveman with Dinosaurs like this chasing you around for the less Stout at heart there are the many displays of our fine Feathered Friends [Music] later Joe showed us how to hail a cab New York style driving through Manhattan's West Side we passed the new Lincoln Center one vast complex of 14 acres Dedicated To The Music Arts before we came to New York we were told you must eat at Mama Leone's and so here we are we were fortunate to be there at this time because the celebration was in progress a large Feast just prior to lent the decorations were like New Year's and after our Italian dinner we went to Radio City Music Hall where we saw Sandy Dennis and Anthony Newley in the movie Sweet November and then the famous music hall Rockettes came on stage and performed their famous kicking line accompanied by the symphony orchestra a stage show complete with ballet soloist ventriloquist comedian and even an excerpt from the Opera Faust completed the evening [Music] by the time Monday morning came we had seen and done a lot and yet there seemed like so much more left that we wanted to do and see but it was time to wait for the bus that would take us back out to the airport [Music] instead of the bus I wanted to go to the top of the Pan Am building and take one of these shuttle helicopters to Laguardia but Vicky's tender tummy wanted to stay closer to the ground while we waited for our flight to be called I started thinking about the wild fast weekend we just had in less than 72 hours we'd spent an afternoon shopping been in the audience of a Merv Griffin television show spent a few hours at the New York Playboy club where we saw very funny comedian Stu Allen and the girl singer from the Joey Bishop show Saturday an afternoon of sightseeing supper at a small restaurant that turns its menu back to 1832 and the price of a steak is eight cents coffee is one cent pie six cents the whole meal for the four of us cost 47 cents we also saw our first Broadway play don't drink the water starring Peggy Cass and Lou Jacoby and written by Woody Allen we toured the Museum of Natural History saw the glitter of man-made Stars at the planetarium we were thrilled of the Joey Chitwood style of driving used by New York's cabbies we had a great Italian meal from the famous Mama Leone's and enjoyed walking through Rockefeller Plaza watching the movie at the Radio City Music Hall seeing the Rockettes listening to the Music Hall grand organ and Symphony Orchestra and as our bac-111 left New York behind I felt there was so much more to see already I wanted to go back to New York City okay [Music]
