Description: Some of O. Henry's best loved stories were written while he was serving a three-year prison sentence for embezzlement, among them "A retrieved reformation", here filmed as "Jimmy Valentine" and told to a dying convict while the author was working in the prison infirmary. The title character is a safecracker who, after he is pardoned, soon returns to his profitable occupation. Eventually he arrives in the town of Elmore, Arkansas, where he plans to rob the local bank. However, a meeting with the banker's daughter causes him to postpone the job and, as time passes, he decides to go straight. When on the point of getting rid of his old tools, a child is accidentally locked in the safe and as it operates on a time-lock, Jimmy is the only one who can get her out in time. Realising that he is being watched by a Pinkerton detective who has tracked him for five months, Jimmy knows that his future is at stake
