First oral interview (of two) with photographer Henry Gilpin (1922-2011) conducted on August 26, 1999 by Donald R. Anderson. Doris Gilpin, artist and Henry's wife, is also present and comments from time to time. Discussion includes: biographical information¶beginning to photograph and develop photos at age 12¶his first cameras¶education by reading magazines (no formal photographic education)¶and introduction to Ansel Adams' 'zone system' from his readings. Discusses his WWII activities in the US Army Air Corps, including his training in the US and many missions over Europe, supplying resistance forces and Patton. Discussions continue with post-WWII years¶marriage to Doris¶and studies with her at the Cleveland School of Art (now Cleveland Institute of Art). He discusses his move back to California and work as a Sheriff, ending up doing crime scene and autopsy photography. Gilpin attended the 1959 Yosemite Workshop with Ansel Adams and went on to teach at Workshops from 1967-1974. He relates stories of his time with these workshops and other photographers including his time spent with the Carmel Photography Club and Carmel Art Association.
