[Music] one day dick was going on an errand his mother had asked him to return her book to the public library you may not believe it but she also told him to hurry [Music] [Music] come on dick we're gonna play ball dick told eddie he was sorry he'd like to go along but that old book [Music] yes [Music] what a strange place dick thought you couldn't play baseball or build model boats in here there's some of the kids from school what are they so interested in hey what's this boats [Music] [Music] gee [Music] i help you oh you're mrs whiting's son dick uh-huh do you like that book well i like to make model sailboats and this book has a picture of one i'd like to make can i read it can i take it home well not that one that's for the display but there's one just like it over there just a moment dick you really like this book don't you yes i do well if you were reading through the pages and found this you wouldn't like it very much would you gee did i do that now that you know how much fun a book can be would you want to find it like this no name [Music] did you wash your hands let me see come along with me dick [Music] then the librarian led dick into the children's section of the library here's where you'll find your bookstick this is a special collection of hobby books we made it up just for boys and girls your age these are only a few of the books on hobbies there are more on the shelf anything you want to read about here's the one you want right here there you are [Music] by the way what other hobbies do you have well i like to collect pictures of airplanes and while we're here look on this shelf a moment here you can find books about all kinds of airplanes here's the book on the latest jet planes oh boy oh dick you like to play games don't you dick sure [Applause] go ahead dick help yourself dick found out that the library wasn't such a bad place after all he found some interesting things among all those books he just needed a little help and the one who can help every time is the librarian she knows where all the different books are and she knows what's in the books other children in the library had found this out too for instance jimmy told her about some rabbits his uncle gave him so she showed him a book on how to make a home for the rabbits [Music] janet had a kitten at home and she liked stories about animals she found the book all by herself after the librarian showed her the right shell [Music] the teacher had asked nancy and mary to find out about some famous living man and report to the class they knew that the librarian would help them [Music] the librarian asked if she could help dick again can i take this home now yes but oh dick whoa there dick dick just knew this was too good to last but the librarian wasn't going to scold him or anything she explained that there were thousands of books in the library and boys and girls were taking them out all the time the librarian had to keep track of all the books coming and going now to do this they have a card for each book on the card she could keep a record of who had the book when it was out also every reader had a card with his name and special number on it it showed him how many books he had out and when he must return them this was to be dick's card she would put his name on it and he'd keep it in his book all the time it was out but first you must get your parents permission to take books out of the library have them sign that for you bring it back and i'll have your card ready well my books oh don't worry we'll hold your books for you till you get back [Music] [Music] dick could hardly wait to show eddie the books he had found but most important of all dick had found that the library was an exciting place a friendly place and eddie was finally convinced too the library had books that he liked it has books that everybody likes why the library is like a playground with the gates always open for you to come in and enjoy yourself why don't you get acquainted with the library after all it's your library [Music]
