Description: Presents an excerpt from Scott O'Dell's story which deals with the Ghalas-At Indians of California when they allow sea otter hunters to use their island as their base of operation. Depicts how, when the tribes attempted to collect payment for the use of the island, the hunters fired upon them, killing most of them. Shows that as the remaining people go for help from the mainland, Karana, a young girl, sees her younger brother left on the island, and she dives into the sea and swims back to the island.
