in grants school to offer education develop to both men and women and they were admitted only on the basis of their studies without regard to any previous experience other than that they could qualify scholastically well president Welch who was the president that first president started his work with the buildings just begun and was the barnes and the farmhouses completed in 1870 we are told that he took a group of instructors and he included himself and they went from North here which the college had been located up here in the in in storey County and they drove all the way up here to see the fall and that was the first class first extension worker work outside of the college a sort of a short course it was called and that began one of the important tasks of Iowa State College to extend in short courses all over the state of Iowa this new knowledge in the field of Agriculture and mechanics that was in 1870 and then the year after that we are told and we see in the records that they were concerned about the courses for girls and so mrs. Welch helped out and she helped start then classes in cooking and domestic arts and so we had the beginning of the Home Economics division which we now have here at Iowa State College soon after that they added to the area by also including courses in veterinary medicine and the school was very much interested in in attracting new scholars and so they put out this interesting little advertisement about Iowa State College of Agriculture it was called air and you can see here the map of the area that we showed you before and it has a few more buildings on it and here are the pictures of some of the buildings and the farm houses and their classrooms that we're in operation about 1890 it included at that time the general science I included agriculture Home Economics and included the Carson's in veterinary medicine as well and so this is the early beginnings herb of Iowa State College here at Ames I noticed the picture there of the old main building that is no longer standing is it no the old main building was replaced by the building now known as Vercher Hall royal and that houses the home of the president and the administrative officer is just as old named in has the same function yes it is the main building and it's called dared chair hall because President dare chair was one of the fine presidents great presidents of Iowa State College move and he followed a few years after president well we all right thank you dr. dryer what this I'll take the pointer all right and the book too because I think the boys and girls might be interested in seeing the cover of this book the cover here has the picture of the campanile e which is the symbol of Iowa State College no matter which direction you approach the campus you will see this tall campanile a this bell tower looming over the trees and pointing its steeple skyward as a kind of a symbol of the reach for higher education it's a symbol of Iowa State College and you'll see this tower on many of the publications of Iowa State College and it is distinctive it is unlike any other bell tower in the state here are some other booklets which may be of interest to you if you're planning to attend Iowa State College you will get this booklet which is an introduction to iowa state and the building there on the cover is a picture of beard sure Paul which dr. dryer mentioned a moment ago and which has the office of the president of the college and some of the other important heads of departments beard sure hall named after President beard sure here is another little booklet which introduces the reader to the Memorial Union this is the social center of the campus the Memorial Union was built in nineteen twenty-eight as a memorial to the alumni of Iowa State College who had fought in World or one and this is a beautiful building it is not only the social center but it has a number of large dining rooms and recreation areas there are several floors of rooms for guests of the college and it's a beautiful building and a place where there is a warm friendly atmosphere at all times perhaps you have seen this book somewhere in your school or public library campus sketches of Iowa State College this has a number of free hand drawings of buildings on the campus a beautiful book and each of these buildings is described on the opposite page this book was published by the Iowa State College press and at the beautiful souvenir of the campus now dr. dryer has told you about the beginnings of Iowa State College and how it began as a college farm and how this farmhouse back here was the first building on the campus the college of course has expanded a great deal in the years since 1858 so last summer when I was making arrangements for today's program I made a film of the college campus so as you might see some of the buildings on the campus and get some idea of how large it is from the modest beginnings in night in 1858 the college has grown to a student body of almost 10,000 and the college plant of course is very large one of the leading colleges in the United States and one of the most important colleges devoted to agriculture and mechanic art in the world mr. Bork has that film at the studio and I hope he can hear my voice because this is the time when we'd like to see the film so mr. borkus you already let us see the film here we go this is the view of the women's dormitories that you see if you approach the campus from the east on highway 30 this is the eastern edge of the campus coming into the picture there at the right is the college heating plant and power plant there is one of the barns where the students of agriculture can practice their arts there's a view of the water tower the first round bottom water tower ever constructed this is a view of the western edge of the campus here is Lake Laverne with the two famous swans floating upon its budem and in the background you get a view of the Memorial Union standing on a hill overlooking the lake here is the north front of the Memorial Union we're moving up toward the fountain with the figures carved by christian petersen famous iowa state sculptor those four statues of Indian women have been sitting out there for years getting soaked to the skin here is a view of the campus north of the Union all the beautiful trees on the campus there are many many varieties of trees because this is a college of agriculture and the students have a chance to study in many different kinds of trees right on the campus and here is the bell tower or the campanile a and from the other side we make a sweep of the campus in the central area there is the home of the business manager mr. Platt and coming into the picture at the left is Curtis Hall this at one time was called agriculture hall and the name has been changed to Curtis hall in honor of a famous Dean of agriculture there is botany hall and swinging over along the eastern edge of the quadrangle here is the men's gymnasium the home of the iowa state cyclones in the distance you see beard sure hall there is one of the men's dormitories in the background there is the east half of the stadium clyde williams field named in honor of a famous Big Ten Champion who was director of athletics at Iowa State for many years this is the scene of the cyclone triumphs you
