[Music] industry on Parade a victorial review of [Music] events in business and industry produced each week by the National Association of Manufacturers they may not look like it but these men are laboratory workers testing the key product of the kushman Motorworks of Lincoln Nebraska that product is of course scooters which are assuming a new much more important role in American life and now must really be able to take it that's one reason why kushman manufactures just about all the parts for its scooters right here in its own plant these are engine blocks for example for the Husky engine arriving in the Machine Shop to be Mill drilled tapped bored and Reed a lot of words meaning simply that its various surfaces are brought to the proper smoothness and size the cylinder walls get a mirror likee finish cylinder heads are made of an aluminum alloy they too must be machined for a snug [Music] fit many of the parts must next be heat treated in order to have the required physical characteristics electricity heats the part then Jets of cold water quickly cool it this induction method as it's called accurately controls the depth of the hardness the great machine shop here at kushman is about as well equipped as any you're likely to find and visitors are sometimes surprised to see such a complex industrial plant and its many skilled workers in the heart of what is usually thought of as a farming [Music] area by means of several different vyor systems the parts Converge on stations where they're put together as sub assemblies here various parts are added to the motor the flywheel has been added and now the cylinder head goes on in straight line production each worker adds another part with no fumbling or other wasted motion it's the same in the building where the scooter frame fork and other parts are being assembled welding slag is chipped off and the surface is buffed clean by one worker then the piece moves moves on to another who installs the seat the rear fender is set in place just 4 years ago 90% of kushman scooters were used strictly for pleasure now 50% perform very useful jobs as in making light deliveries or running personnel and equipment around large industrial plants the Armed Forces use a lot of them and even the post office department is experimenting with them as a means of taking a big load off the feet of America's letter carriers in line with this new dignity the manufacturer would prefer the word truckster to the old name Scooter these scooters uh trucksters that is don't just seem to be of different sizes and shapes they are the company produces 50 different models for all the various uses being found for this versatile machine here we see the last of a great many inspections and test runs to which it's subjected both before final assembly and afterward so from the capital of Nebraska to all parts of the country of which it at the very center go additional thousands of sturdy little Vehicles each year during many past presidential elections nearly half of America's eligible voters failed to cast their ballots now it has been said that poor officials are elected by supposedly good people who do not vote yet in this country the ballot is the Citizen's weapon to ensure good government and correct abuses of power or position in the interest of our country every eligible voter should closely examine political candidates and the things they stand for then vote wisely in every local state and national election here's a beauty of a home at Scarsdale New York that's known as the plastic house no the walls and roof aren't made of plastic but practically everything inside is curtains and drapes for example and tabletops that resist Burns not only the fabric that covers Furniture but even the structural parts very slight alteration of the shape color size or packaging of a product can make a world of difference in how that product will be accepted by the public The Firm has built up a large staff of artists Architects and other experts who must take a product they know is necessary and beneficial and make it look that way they found for example that brightening up the lake label of a popular line of soups caused thousands of additional Shoppers to decide today's the day to have soup for lunch the hand painted label will get a thorough study and testing before it's accepted a soap manufacturer found that his rounded bar was too prone to slip from the grass so the industrial designers working with wood came up with a bar that retained the rounded edges but wasn't so iive in the bathtub but vastly more dramatic industrial designing goes on behind closed doors at lipincott and marges where work proceeds on such projects as the atom powered submarine alteration of appearance is by no means the chief function of industrial design the people of firms like this devote much less time to prettying up a product than they do making it more compact convenient to use and sometimes less expensive to manufacture in any case theirs is an important important place in the nation's industrial [Music] scene ever read a book of Shepherd's citations not likely unless you're a lawyer in which case you refer to these volumes almost every working day of your life there are books put out here at Shephard's citations Incorporated in Colorado Springs Colorado to guide the lawyers of the land through the Maze of laws and past court cases which might have a bearing on a new case in which similar issues are raised two Shepherds come copies of every law publication and every reference by a judge to a law these are analyzed to determine their significance then cross indexed for ready reference the assembled material is set up in type for inclusion in one of more than 60 national state and Regional books of citations from the type setting machines the lines of type will go to the composing room to be assembled into columns and the columns into Pages 16 pages are locked in one form to be printed at one time then cut apart later after being bound into volumes interspersed with the new information are lines from previous issues that are still applicable after proof readers have checked every proposed changes in our businesses system viewing each proposal as to its immediate effects compared to its long range [Music] effects industry on Parade drops in on Fred oper a man with a very specialized calling indeed stained glass windows are the product of his firm the jacobe Art Glass Company of St Louis Mr oper introduces us to some of the craftsmen who create the impressive Windows of colored glass that enhance museums churches and libraries Craftsman like the man who transfers the design for the window onto heavy paper a process known as cartooning the paper is cut out in the shape of each of the pieces of glass that will go into the window allowance must be made and space left for the leads that will go between the pieces of glass and hold them together the parts of the jigsaw puzzle are set in place one by one the color of each part is known in advance of course but the task of selecting the precise shade is a demanding one there might be as many as 50 different shades of a single color jacobe Prides itself on having the most complete stock of colored glass in the world the glass selected is cut by a man who uses the paper cartoons as his patterns if you've ever cut a piece of glass for even a basement window you'll realize what an expert he [Music] is where lettering is called for pigments are painted on to be fused into the glass later in a kill now the jigsaw is reassembled in glass the pieces will be held together temporarily with beeswax the easel on which they rest is clear plate glass so the section can be raised to the light while pigments are added for further shading after being taken apart and annealed in the kill the pieces are assembled for a a third time this time with lead in place of the wax supporting cross pieces known as wind bars are soldered in place and the sections are ready for installation in such impressive structures as the Armstrong Browning library of Baylor University in Waco Texas illustrations in glass of the works of the famous poet Robert Browning these windows are themselves truly works of art [Music] the industry on Parade a pictorial review of events in business and industry produced each week by the periodicals not all of the 800 scientists and technicians who labor here are seeking specific new products s or Improvement of old ones many are engaged in pure research establishing new scientific facts without regard to their immediate commercial possibilities although the experimental station does not manufacture any products except for test purposes it does have experimental production Machinery in many fields in which Dupont products are used here for example we see the processing of a synthetic textile filament called dayron polyester fiber not yet in commercial production tiny filaments come out of the spinette and solidify as they meet the air they're wound together at the base of the machine next the fiber is threaded on a drawing machine that stretches it to several times its original length strangely the stretching gives dayron additional strength for It lines up the molecules parallel to each other although the first synthetic fiber was developed only about a half century ago today one of all textile fiber used in this country is synthetic dresses suits furniture covering rope Tire Linings uniforms tents and parachutes for the armed forces the synthetics serve wherever natural fibers do and in some cases serve much better now they're even working on synthetic fur coats launderable and completely mothproof here we see a demonstration of one of the remarkable characteristics of dayron two pairs of boy slacks are immersed in water this pair is made of dayron the other of wool even when thoroughly soaked and rung out the dayron holds its crease a suit of this amazing new fiber could go through a rainstorm and scarcely lose its shape but the research scientists go right ahead looking for improvements even before dayron is in the stores among their services to Industry the DuPont IST s and physicists are helping in the development of a new type of lubricating grease that for certain purposes may prove Superior to any now in existence and one of its Chief ingredients is derived of all things from Sand the sand you find at the seashore it's treated to produce a silica powder so fine it looks like a liquid when shaken in a jar it's actually a dry powder it won't even mix with water when dropped into water it stays dry floating on top but the silica powder will mix with oil and when it does it forms a grease one quart of oil mixed with one quart of powder surprisingly forms just a little bit more than a quart of Grease now let's see an illustration of one of the new gree's special properties its resistance to heat on the left ordinary grease oil thickened with soap on the right silica thicken Grease the Heat's turned on and almost immediately the ordinary grease thins out losing much of its value as a lubricant the silica grease is unaffected and so the hunt for better things for Better Living Through Chemistry continues ingredients are mixed in an experiment that may produce a new plastic or perhaps the plastic is already discovered and the best ways of producing it are being soft in every corner of the great station men of science labor on a wide variety of projects like this sometimes they work alone sometimes in teams this is a machine that produces on a laboratory scale sheets of a plastic called polythene in tubular form this is a product already familiar to housewives in the form of refrigerator bags the researchers are busy discovering New Uses to which it can be put next we find a metallurgist testing various Alloys of the still unfamiliar metal titanium the breaking point is determined on a machine that pulls the powerful Rod apart like a piece of licorice these projects constitute an outstanding example of Industrial Research an organized effort to translate scientific knowledge into goods and services that will benefit and enrich our [Music] lives the men and women of American industry are doing a tremendous job in equipping our Armed Forces for defense against communist aggression while continuing to turn out Goods to maintain our high living standard for instance it takes more than 720 lbs of raw materials and 5,000 man hours of work to equip each American Soldier for battle every one of us can be proud of the skill and speed with which the job is being done our national security rests both on the ability and teamwork of our fighting GIS and and their the family like all the others is currently celebrating the company's 50th anniversary by intensifying civilian and Military production uction component parts of more than 750 million cans boxes and cartons are fed into the machines in this one plant every year to emerge as containers for anything from coffee to medical [Applause] supplies more than 750 cans are opened in the average Bri American Home each year cans containing foods beverages paints tobacco antifreeze even tennis balls and Axle Grease the development of the tin can made possible whole new Industries and has had sweeping effect on others including such basic Fields as agriculture some quarters have credited our progress in this Century as much to the can as to the automobile the radio and the telephone but like all industry and the nation generally the plant operates these days under a cloud the threat of open violent attack on our way of life which has proved far more productive than all the fiveyear plans wrapped together the 1600 men and women of the Brooklyn T Co plant prepare for possible disaster with regular air raid drills all employees are instructed in the principles of self- protection in the event of atomic attack at work at home or in the street nucleus of the plant defense is an emergency Brigade consisting of 54 firefighters and 125 members of a fire exit organization two first aid stations have been set up and equipped with stretchers and medical supplies as industry steps up its output to arm the nation and to battle inflation it must also prepare its own house for the worst eventuality the Plymouth Michigan plant of the buroughs adding machine company its clean modern lines symbolize the role played by Burrows in helping other firms to keep up with developments in this fast-moving Industrial Age let's watch the Assembly of one of the fabulous machines that allow complex organizations to keep their operation understandable and at all times under control Burrows machines do much more than just ad these days the one here beginning to take shape is called the sensematic accounting machine and it'll do everything but sweep out the office at the end of the day in various parts of the plant the subassemblies are put together by skilled workers adep at installing the tiniest Parts swiftly and surely as it grows the machine becomes increasing [Music] complicated the machine one of the most flexible ever devised can handle so many different accounting jobs that even its manufacturers are still learning of new problems it can cope with the mechanical brain of the sensematic is a control unit that can be adjusted for any one of four types of work a flick of the finger and the machine changes over from say posting a payroll to working out payment schedules for installment credit [Music] before the machine is mounted in its case final adjustments are made by men who know its workings like the back of their hands completely assembled at last the machines get what is called a commercial inspection here operators trained in scores even hundreds of accounting procedures throw everything in the book look at the Willing senatics the machine prints whether the carriage is going forward or backward and they've yet to come up with a situation that can stump this remarkable offspring of the adding [Music] machine many people believe that high prices cause inflation but actually high prices are the result of inflation not the cause inflation simply means more money than there are Goods available to buy the inflation that has cut our dollars nearly in half is a result of not paying all of the costs of World War II as we fought it together with easy credit policies which overexpanded our money supply the sensible way to lick inflation is to increase production curb private and public credit from making inflationary loans reduce all unnecessary federal spending and increase taxes to put our government on a pay as we go Bas it [Music] industry on less than 17,000 residents is located May tag largest washing machine company on Earth and yet thanks to the determination of the firm's young president Fred mayag II Newton is anything but a company town the May tag name can be found everywhere you turn in Newton on the leading Hotel the park the outdoor Amphitheater and of course over the firm's two great plants but may Tag's attitude is that it's in the business of making washing machines not running a town and it holds strictly to that policy participating in Civic activities like a good industrial neighbor but leaving the direction of Community Affairs in the hands of its citizens maintaining its position in the industrial world is quite an undertaking all by itself involving one of the most elaborate layouts for processing metals to be found anywhere casting Machining stamping and enameling are just a few of the steps through which the metals must must pass before they can become parts for washing machines while the metal sheet that will become a washer cabinet is stamped out the spin dryer tub is pierced from within with 1,56 holes while the Basin that encloses the spin dryer tub is hand dipped in porcel and enamel then set on a rack to allow the excess enamel to drain [Music] off other parts get their primer and finish coats of high bake enamel by spray guns the waterfall draws off fumes and excessive enamel sprayed past the parts the parts will go to an oven for a baking at 275° F meanwhile the base plate that will hold the motor and driving mechanism as well as supporting the rest of the washer is Flash welded permanently [Music] together four different kinds of Wells are made on every washer but this this is the most spectacular with the motor installed the base frame is joined to the tub assembly the clutch assembly is added to the power unit for this fully automatic washer that will agitate the clothes rinse them and spin them dry in a series of five operations after a careful inspection and tightening of the water seal the machines are ready for their agitators it was with the granddaddy of this agitator and a new principle of forcing water through the clothes instead of dragging the clothes around scrubbing them against the inside of the tub that mayag revolutionized the manufacturer of washing machines back in 1922 on the revolving testing station 43 partly assembled washers are put through the various phases of the washing rins Ing and drying cycle on goes the cabinet and when it's securely fastened the unit will be complete the product of a rather small city in Iowa that carries a name known everywhere in the Civilized world one of the names frequently mentioned as an example of the American genius for mass production of highest quality products Newton Iowa is no Detroit but it'll take a backseat to no City in its per capita number of skilled industrial Craftsmen and desite the economic importance of mayag to the community Newton's not a company Town rather mayag is the town's company good company good [Music] town today much of the credit for conquering disease goes to workers in biology a few years ago biologists learned that Miracle drugs antibiotics like penicillin could be made from moles drug companies redouble their effort efforts along these lines one company engaged a team of 55 scientists who in turn tested 100,000 soil samples from all over the world in search of moles containing bacteria fighting qualities 2 and a half years later after spending $4 million another wonder drug teramis was discovered again proving that America's New Frontiers lie in chemistry in a conference room in Cincinnati the national executive committee of the disabled American veterans meets with national Commander uing W ma for a discussion of the tag plant is a sort of Rehabilitation laboratory where Disabled Vets receive training and develop confidence before moving on to jobs in private Industries in their own communities if keys on a ring with an idental tag are lost they should be dropped into any mailbox the DAV will restore them to their owners the T are attached to cards that invite a contribution to the DAV to Aid disabled veterans and their dependence in many very real ways assistant National agitant John fainer checks on the progress of the [Music] work it's quite a job making sure that 35 million motorists get replicas of their own license plates and not somebody else's listen of the names and addresses of the car owners come of course from the state governments modern packaging machines make the loss of a and bacon Manufacturing Company Pioneers in glass fiber production now comes the newest product developed by this enterprising firm out of that age-old substance glass industry on Parade cameraman
