[Music] industry on Parade a Victor in business and industry produced each week by the National Association of Manufacturers but Montana copper capital of the world built on what has long been known as the richest Hill on earth below the surface the men of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company answer their country's urgent need for more and more copper by tapping a great new source of this precious red metal not a new vein but a new way of bringing out lower grade copper ore which by conventional methods would be far too expensive to mine at a cost of $27 million Anaconda utilizes the block caving system for putting lower grade ores into the service of a copper hungry [Music] America as in all modern Minds the safety engineer maintains constant direct supervision keeping the safety of the m miners the Paramount consideration before drilling into a new face all loose rock that might fall on the men is knocked away in a process called barring down holes for the explosive charges are drilled up to this point the work has been much like that in any other Anaconda mine but now we'll begin to see the differences of the block caving method for the ore once it's blasted loose goes through practically no manhandling whatever instead it drops through grates into transfer shoots that feed it to mine cars waiting on a lower level obviously a lot of costly preparation must go into this kind of mining but once the work begins it goes fast and the savings are tremendous only such efficiency makes it possible to utilize these millions of tons of otherwise useless copper ore the cars each carrying 5 tons of ore from which not only copper but also other critical Metals may be extracted move along to the new Kelly shaft through which their contents will be raised to the surface 50 years ago Hard Rock mining was a backbreaking business with a great deal of pick and shovel work and endless lifting and throwing but under a setup like this the men who work the mines let the machines they control handle the backbreaking jobs the cars are dumped automatically into bins feeding the skips that Hoist the ore to the surface not just to the surface but far above it a height from which it can be moved into the OR bins the 12 ton skips are already bringing up enough ore to produce 40 million pounds of copper a [Music] year the highgrade ore in the veins of this area have long since been mined out but now the pressure has been put on for more metals of every kind and Anaconda applies unique methods of increasing still further copper production already at high post-war levels from here the door will be transported to the company's processing Mills at anaconda and Great Falls Montana there to be converted into the pure metal so necessary for electrical wire and cable engine radiators roofs ship parts and other military and civilian products of every type and description all products of copper that will be produced in still greater quantity thanks to an ingenious new method of utilizing the wealth of the but that still the richest Hill on Earth [Music] no one has to tell us that we're carrying around cheap dollars these days Housewives know it industry feels it when it replaces tools and machinery and our government sees it when it buys for defense actually our dollar is worth only 53 cents compared to the 100 cent do we had in 39 we can help halt further inflation by producing better and turning out more Goods by holding down costs by using credit carefully by opposing extravagance in government and by Saving in every [Music] way a truckload of birch logs from the North Woods pulls into the yard of the Pino veneer company at melan Wisconsin to be transformed into one of the most beautiful and durable veneers ever cut off a piece of hardwood this is the plant that was the largest single producer of birch veneer for Britain's famous mosquito bombers during World War II the RAF used the thin sheets of wood in place of metal wasn't concerned about the product's appearance now civilian users get the benefit of birch veneer strength and are very much concerned and impressed by its appearance the PED log is brought to the LA where it's centered carefully to obtain the greatest quantity of flawless veneer it can possibly [Music] produce at first the razor sharp Cutting Edge hits only the high spots a man called the Clipper separate sections with knots or other imperfections from the clear uniform portions and once the log has been reduced to a perfect cylinder we get a long continuous ribbon the record here is one unbroken strip an 85th of an inch thick and 1 mile long but this piece is an eighth of an inch thick and the log wasn't very large so the ribbon runs about 50 ft now this to will be clipped the thinnest veneer produced here is a paper thin hundredth of an inch the thickest almost a/4 of an inch some of the plants output goes to the firm's plywood factory at Ashland Wisconsin but most goes to furniture makers and others such users of [Music] veneer until now the veneer has been saturated with the hot water that allowed it to be cut off the log the moisture has also made it easier to handle but now comes the time for it to be dried after which the strips are spliced by a sort of wood welding device into panels that look for all the world as though they were made of many many Birch boards put together by a master Carpenter and so do desks wall panels Furniture get the richness the hardness the permanence of birch one of our most beautiful Forest products made to go a long way by these Craftsmen of the North Woods windup toys still going strong after many years for there's nothing like watching the little car or truck Zoom away under its own power the Los Angeles company that makes many of the spring motors for windup toys as well as for clocks alarms and scores of other products using the same sort of power plant has done some zooming itself since it was founded as a hobby in 1930 by Betty and Arthur Wilson ABC Products Incorporated since the start of World War II has also been an important manufacturer of communications equipment parts for the armed forces and aircraft parts for such companies as Douglas vendex Consolidated volti and many others much of the work on defense orders cannot be shown for security reasons but there's plenty going on here that can be shown for side by side with the military orders the company turns out for example as many as $10,000 arm mechanisms a day although ABC products normally employs only about 90 persons it has an investment in plant and Equipment of more than a quarter of a million dollar classified by the government as a small business it's a business that's a very important Cog in both our military and civilian economies last part to go on the spring motor is a fixed winding key here the key goes onto a shaft attached to the coil spring that stores up energy and releases it as [Music] needed Door and Window burglar alarms powered by Spring Motors give warning when the door knob is turned or the window raised Beyond a certain point as demonstrated by ABC products co-founder and president the company she founded as a hobby has grown far beyond the miniature scale of some of its [Music] products by maintaining a free economy Americans have been able to produce more and better Goods in less time at prices all of us can afford Americans have accomplished this by improving and strengthening its individual competitive enterprise system other nations which have chipped away or destroyed freedom cannot match our magnificent industrial advancement nor our high standard of living as good citizens we must raise our voices whenever we see anything which will halt our parade of progress or destroy our way of life in this land of the [Music] free ray guns for the Buck Rogers era all but their guns all right electron guns with a very practical application today and John Gunther of Chicago their inventor has created a business around them Gunther combined one modern product Plastics like those used in kitchen tabletops and sink surfaces with the even newer science of electronics this piece of texite is joined to the wood with glue nothing unusual about that but now we'll see how the glue is hardened into the strongest most permanent Bond imag by heating it with a stream of electron shot from the gun the intense heat thus created does something to the molecules of the glue to make it stick so tight that when you try to pull wood and plastic apart the wood will disintegrate first not only can Plastics be joined to wood in this way but wood to wood also eliminating the need for nails and accomplishing in minutes what would take hours in a gluing press if it could be done in a the Press at all the new Prudential Building in Chicago is utilizing plywood walls for offices put up with the guns produced by Gunther's company reev Electronics Incorporated like ironing a shirt with one important difference the heat comes not from the kitchen stove but from that highly versatile object the item here's the result the plywood gives way before the glue will the same basic idea is being developed by reev Electronics to heat treat equipment for motor plants to preheat plastic so they can be shaped and to bond materials that can't be seed like plastic raincoats a brand new industry based on a brand new idea here's another demonstration of the remarkable way in which the electronically heated glue seems to fuse two materials together in almost no time at all if you have a heavy eating brother-in-law hanging around the house here's one way to support [Music] him industry on for a victorial review of events in business and industry produced each week by the National Association of [Music] Manufacturers f9f Panther the jet powered Navy fighter plane that's made so many thousands of successful sores against the enemy from the decks of the carriers of Uncle Sam's Pacific Fleet here at the Beth Page Long Island plant of Grumman aircraft Engineering Corporation The Men Who first created the panther constantly modify and improve on it to keep their pride and joy the best carrier-based jet fighter in the air rolls of sheet aluminum just one of the raw materials that will be processed into that fabulous mechanism the jet airplane a powerful cold rubber press with a force of 2500 tons forms the Contours of wings and fuselage the parts are then joined by means of every up tothe minute method known for making a permanent Union without disturbing the all important outer surfaces that determine the plane's ability to fly the fuselage is built in three principal parts nose cone main fuselage section after fuselage section a vital timesaver is the pinch Riveter each of the tiny rivets must hold firm without fail against the stresses and strains of flight at speeds of more than 600 M hour another type of unique riveting device the rivet heads must ground smooth and all metal particles whipped away to ensure an absolutely smooth skin for the aircraft the hydraulic system gets a thoroughgoing workout wings that hold rigid at supersonic speeds must fold like a bird's wings on crowded carrier [Music] decks landing gear must be three times as strong as that on a landbased plane to stand the shock of abrupt Landings on the carriers elevator Rudder trim tabs also operate hydraulically out of the tailpipe will Roar hot gases with the horsepower of 300 supercharged automobiles helping our Navy to maintain its supremacy of the Seas product not of Grumman alone but of the firms that supplied the engines the steel and the aluminum the tires caes Armament Communications equipment and everything else that goes into a modern military aircraft thousands of Industries large and small participated in putting around this pilot an aircraft in which he could have confidence fitted to the grueling task of operating effectively from the tiny deck of a ship speeding along far out at Sea the men and women of all these industries are determined to keep their Grumman Panther and its successors the best in the air competition the driving force in our business system compels a business to satisfy the customer unless a company can keep Pace with its competitors on price quality and service it is eventually forced out of business competition benefits all customers continually through lower prices higher quality and improved Services the business that pays its bills and makes a profit is a healthy business the increase in efficiency and in individual productivity which results from competition has made it possible to achieve both High wages and low prices weighing in ceremonies of a young Bucko for whom this is not the first trip to the scales nor the last industry on Parade drops in on one of the companies manufacturing the appliances whose accuracy weight usefulness and styling have been so drastically improved upon in recent years here at the paloo Manufacturing Company in Evanston Illinois scales accurate to a fraction of an ounce are put together in what amounts to a hand assembly operation from start to finish this newly designed platform scale only one of dozens of models that are used for the weighing of anything from letters to liver worst consists of only 29 Parts as compared with the 42 parts that went into former models yet by utilizing powerful lightweight materials like aluminum phoo has been able to make its scale stronger and more durable which in turn helps them remain accurate throughout their lifetime scales used commercially must meet rigid legal requirements but standards for scales used in the homes are raised by the even more stringent law of competition many scales like these are used by Housewives to double check on their grossers or butchers even though the day of weighing a thumb along with a pound of meat is pretty well a thing of the past now before the outer case or housing is put on each scale will be carefully adjusted and calibrated as the weights descend their effect is noted on the dial and corrections made where necessary [Music] [Applause] a bright plastic housing takes the place of five separate metal Parts in the old model not just a substitute it's a better material for the job even the household scale familiar in kitchens and bathrooms across the land has to keep Pace with progress doing a better job than ever and making an attractive appearance in the bargain a giant industrial plant or an important Educational Center actually trade high school at Springfield Massachusetts is both for here through the cooperation of local Industries labor unions and Educators young men and women seeking the foundation for a career become skilled in dozens of different crafts fitted for jobs not in the standard trades alone but if they're so inclined in such 20th century professions as radio and television using equipment they have either built themselves or been loan by the television industry of the area they stage programs and channel them to the television screens set up in the various classrooms in this panel discussion program students in the audience pop questions at the participants as the TV Camera sees all hears all make good are prepared and decorated and a bakery equipped with everything you'll find in a commercial establishment again much of it contributed or loan by Springfield Industries the young men and women acquire skills that in many cases will lead to good positions after graduation while at the same time increasing the productivity of a region in which standards of proficiency are already very high New England's familiarity with machines of every kind is widely known and the training given with the tools and equipment of companies like American B will someday be profitably applied in the plants of those same [Applause] companies in many cases the gears and other parts these young men turn out will be put to actual use the same is true of the work of those learning the laundry and dry cleaning business business for they take care not only of their own clothes and linen but those of the school as [Music] [Applause] well in a five room apartment the students decorated themselves girls are trained as domestics or housewives in the Tea Room girls learn how to serve a meal and perform the other duties of hostesses while in a laboratory completely equipped by the city's Dental Association students are trained for careers as dental assistants thus an outstanding trade school prepares the young people of its area for happy profitable useful lives as good citizens of one of America's oldest [Music] communities inflation America's number one danger at home has reduced the value of our Dollar in the last dozen years until today it's worth just 53 cents when we go to spend it unless inflation is checked it can America's defense program the chances of peace and crush each of us personally all of us can protect ourselves our family and our nation against dangerous inflation if we will resolve to turn out more Goods help keep costs from spiraling demand more economical national and local government use credit carefully and Save in every way what men or woman raised on a farm can't remember this daily chore still being performed by many of rural Citizen Water for the livestock for cooking bathing laundry all pumped by hand the average person uses 35 gallons of water a day but when you have to pump it you generally get along with less a firm that's been attending to the water needs of a good part of the nation for nearly 34 of a century is the Fe Meyers and brother company of Ashland Ohio a great many of the oldfashioned pumps Meyers turned out in its early years are still functioning today and occasionally require replacement parts which the company produces in about the same way it always has this merrygoround operated by foot power might be called the Forerunner of the assembly line but Meyers has real assembly lines too and a host of other modern machines and techniques that are used in the production of its more upto-date products automatic water systems power pumps sprayers and farm equipment in a variety of operations metals are fabricated into the working parts of the dozens of items in the Meyers line here the pumps that bring the advantages of City living to areas beyond the water M are put [Music] together with a self oiling system built into the pump it can work for prolonged periods with no servicing of any kind the drive wheel that will be turned by a belt connected with the electric motor and will push the plungers back and forth to draw water out of the ground forcing it into a tank under [Music] pressure finally the motor is installed and a test run proves the equipment ready to go into service giving all Americans no matter where they live a constant automatic supply of water comparable to that provided by City Water Systems here on the Riley Farm outside Ashland a remarkable change is about to be affected with the addition of an adequate water supply the equipment is installed below ground right over the well it doesn't have to be easily accessible for servicing for there isn't likely to be any servicing necessary with all the water they need dairy cattle increase milk production as much as 20% and the Riley family enjoys conveniences that would have been the rarest luxuries to an earlier generation running water plentiful always at hand dishwashing used to be a real grind for drinking and hundred other uses the Rileys are as well fixed for water as any family and the only one who might have had a complaint silently suffers the new setup like the true hero that he [Music] is industry on Parade a victorial review of events in business and industry produced each week by the National Association of Manufacturers the workers of the Boeing airplane company of Seattle Washington the men and women who turned out the super Forks of World War II are today building another giant of the Airways the c97 Strat [Music] freighter the Assembly of the huge pelage and the making of the hundreds of other parts by subcontractors may happen thousands of miles apart but it's here at Boeing that the pieces go together all the way from the tail to the [Music] nose the fuchal Lage framework of the c97 is riveted so strongly the plane can carry a payload of 53,000 lb it's big and wide and stout enough to combine the capabilities of a Cargo Carrier a troop transport and a flying hospital if you set the fuselage end up it would be almost equal to the height of a 10-story building it's 101 ft long the plane has four Pratt and Whitney engines each with a takeoff horsepower of 3500 today's Strat freighter is the world's first production model designed to do the tremendous job of carrying troops cargo or hospital equipment and patients Boeing turned out its first Strat freighter during World War II to serve as transport teammates to its b29 and with the development of the b50 the newer c97 were redesigned to continue the teammate pattern the new plane carries a crew of five pilot co-pilot flight engineer Navigator and radio operator its wings spread measures more than 141 ft and back at the tail is another engineering Marvel the Boeing designed flying boom system the main part is a telescoping metal pipe which enables the Strat freighter to be converted into an aerial refueling tanker the flying boom system is what makes the plane so different from the earlier models and the conversion from freighter to tanker can be accomplished in about 6 hours the 74 ton plane is doing all that's asked of it by the US Air Force running vitally needed errands in all theaters of operation the Strat Freer is Boeing's answer to Uncle Sam's need for a wartime Workhorse of the sky Freedom as we understand it is more than political or economic in the last analysis it is religious all the great religions of the world have struggled to relate the individual to his God people are important and significant our forefathers said in their Declaration of Independence and their constitution that not even the government can interfere with certain unalienable individual rights and liberties we are creatures of God let us work together as Americans to remain Dynamic and free recognize this vegetable chances are you've eaten it lately it's the ancho pepper product of Mexico in the southern counties of California and one of the Prime ingredients in Mexican dishes like Chile enchilados and tamales we're at the Walker aex chili company in Austin Texas to show you how the favorite dishes of Mexico have been put into mass production turning out Delicacies like tamali under sanitary conditions that conformed to the stringent regulations of Department of Agriculture inspectors the spices and other ingredients that go into tamali are carefully weighed out according to the company formula and even though the operators has had years of experience he still leaves nothing to memory the government inspected beef is sliced before going into the Grinders so it can be ground uniformly after cooking it shrinked about 30% the beef is ready to be mixed with the other ingredients the meat is pre-shrunk so that the tamales will have a full Meat Center after spices are added the meat juices are put back in Generations ago Mexican women concocted the recipe for the tamale and slowly and painstakingly prepared the ingredients with crude implements paying little of any attention to the simplest rules of cleanliness they'd be amazed at the way tamales are produced here this is the mixture that will become Masa the doike layer that encloses the Meat Center and from here on the operation is something that would really floor those ancient ladies of [Music] Mexico meat goes into one shoot Masa into the other Untouched by human hands they'll emerge on the floor below as finish tamales here they come at a rate as high as 50,000 an hour instead of the Corn Shucks that used to be used the tamales have been wrapped in vegetable parchment paper again for sanitary reasons these wrappers are peeled off and discarded of course before the Tali are eaten the can are filled to the top with the same chili gravy that was mixed with the meat centers after sealing the cans are taken to a retort really nothing more than a big pressure cooker and there they'll be cooked for 85 minutes at a temperature of [Music] 240° the sealed cans will hold all the flavor in the outsides of the cans will now be cleaned of any food particles that might adhere to them and after that they're ready for labeling packing and shipment to all parts of the country a taste for Mexican food has developed just about everywhere in recent years and firms like Walker's ostc has had a lot to do with developing it on goes glue for the labels and then the labels themselves in a few minutes they'll be on their way to Maine or Montana Hoboken or Hawaii just one of the fine foreign dishes we can enjoy knowing that they were made and put up under our own high food [Music] standards a cash register can ring up millions of dollars in SA during its lifetime but it would be difficult for any machine to calculate the years of thought and experiment and study represented by these 7,857 parts that go into the manufacturer of a cash register at the home of the National Cash Register company in Dayton Ohio these parts symbolize the evolution of a product with a history of nearly 3 quarters of a [Music] century down through the years new devices and improvements have been worked out on the drafting board until today's Cash Register has become one of the finest Precision machines produced by American industry the modern cash register is kept right up to the minute with every development that improves its operation the use of plastics for example among other things they're used in making windows over the keys the huge screw machines at National Cash Register make many of the different parts that must fit together precisely when the assembly line is reached in a person's hand they're not much bigger than the works of an average clock by making its own castings the company can control the process throughout and maintain a high standard of quality a cash register cannot be nearly right it must be perfect the first cash register with an electric motor was turned out in Dayton back in 1900 and it was an outstanding example of pioneering many people were skeptical for in those days they said Motors couldn't be made that small the efforts of many departments Converge on the assembly line as the cash register moves along the workers in each department have all the materials and parts right at hand ready to install them without any wasted motion much of the manufacturing cost in any Factory is tied up in the process of picking things up and putting them down again a converge system like this saves a lot of time and energy there is continuous inspection of every cach register that comes off the assembly line [Music] and the inspectors use more than 30,000 gauges to make their checks and double checks before the Machinery is encased in its cover many of the cash registers made in datton are destined for merchants in Far Away places and they're geared to ring up the cash of any the same goes for the various accounting machines produced by the national cash register company machines that make many kinds of records for all kinds of business for example the machine that prints the deposit or withdrawal in your bank book the machine that writes out your payroll check from the shipping Department the next stop for the cash register maybe just around the corner to the grocery store or maybe around the world each one an ambassador of Goodwill for American Business no matter what its [Music] destination since the first oil well was drilled less than a century ago thousands of petroleum products have been introduced yet scientific Explorations have barely begun in the past 5 years scientists patented over 8,000 new oil inventions chemists and all other Industries are just as active in their search for new chemical marbles in the few years since World War II we all have seen the Swift growth of Industries based on chemical discoveries Plastics synthetic fabrics soapless detergents today more and more chemists and chemical Engineers are needed to continue developing past discoveries and Pioneer new [Music] ones at the Ford Motor Company Plant in Dearborne Michigan a couple of Engineers are busy working on their latest model America's average man if you are a truly average American like Oscar here your weight is 165 your height 5' 10 and2 Oscar has a better than average job though he just sits around all day while they check him against the new car designs to make sure the headro vision distance the steering wheel and brake are all just right for the greatest number of people the measurements of his arms legs torso even his fingers and head conform exactly to those of the average male as determined by the Armed Forces during World War II putting to the test the Lessons Learned in working with Oscar is a live citizen also average in height weight and so on he demonstrates that getting a car's Dimensions just right makes car riding a little smoother for everybody that is for everybody but Oscar he's never taken a ride in his [Music] life
