Adapts the short story of the same title by Sherwood Anderson which depicts the conflicts and confusions experienced by a young man entering adulthood while working the racetrack circuit as a horse tender in the early 1900s. Follows the young man as he meets a young woman and lies about his family and position in order to impress her. Dramatizes the young man's dilemma when he realizes that he is as fond of her as she is of him and that their relationship is based on his lie.
