foreign [Music] with a shocking comparison of the East and West Wall coming up now on ilmondo [Music] foreign I'm Bill singer if you're a little like me and I think you are you probably like Chinese food maybe we've even mastered the art of eating with chopsticks but have you ever taken a rickshaw Ride Along Nathan Road or Far East Terrace in Hong Kong if you haven't you're going to enjoy the next few minutes on El Mundo as we visit Hong Kong and if you've been there here's your chance to relive some cherished memories later on in the show we'll make a quick comparison of the East and West walls of Hong Kong and Berlin right now our next stop is Hong Kong Harbor [Music] foreign [Music] colony of Hong Kong the West Berlin of Asia the treasure chest of the Orient and perhaps the most desired stopping place anywhere since the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 the growth of Hong Kong has been interrupted only once by the Japanese Occupation Hong Kong was founded for business and it exists for business it has been governed well but always with an eye to what Free Enterprise business interests want [Music] [Applause] [Music] today Hong Kong has modern buildings like these it's a booming growing exciting city of strange contrast between east and west foreign Center in the heart of Hong Kong Island is as new as tomorrow the city hall completed in 1962 and the Supreme Court are other examples of this colony's contract foreign [Music] [Applause] s are the finest anywhere the luxurious Hong Kong Hilton is the largest single building hotel in the world outside North America in just a two-minute Rickshaw ride from the Star Ferry [Music] British American European automobiles may have outdated and outnumbered the Rickshaw as at long last but when the afternoon traffic builds up only a Volkswagen can outmaneuver a rickshaw [Music] it's not fair to call Hong Kong the whole world in one city but even in matters of religion every faith is extensively represented here a new modern Catholic Church contrasted by the Chinese Christian Church or the lovely Buddhist Pagoda the somewhat psychedelic colors and creatures of the huge Tiger Bomb Gardens were created by the late Tiger Bomb King Mr alboon Hall he made a fortune from mentholated ointments the gardens were built for the people of the colony and the children especially enjoy some of the unusual creatures depicted here [Music] the Tiger Bomb Gardens were built on several Injustice Stones Throw from downtown Hong Kong the main attraction of the gardens is a lovely white seven-tiered Pagoda overlooking the whole colony the album Hall Mansion is carefully preserved near the entrance to this fascinating Garden of faces on the other side of Hong Kong William Holden's home overlooking repos Bay sight of the famed love is a many splendored thing a view without equal of Deep Water Bay in a moment a sharp contrast to all of this as we see the shocking side of Hong Kong next on El Mundo [Music] while Hong Kong is as new as tomorrow as fresh as spring and as fragrant as a field of flowers there is another side another kind of life in the middle of this beauty is the other face the small shelters filled with chunks and sand pans fishing boats where people raised married and die without ever tasting the sweet milk of that other side without ever enjoying a hot shower listening to a stereo watching television those local residents not fortunate enough to own a Sampan or junk might live behind the tall towers in paper box shanties like these a sharp contrast to the life in nearby Stanley in spite of these sites the people want to be clean to progress no this isn't washed day this is every day row after row of freshly laundered clothing which no laundromat has ever seen [Music] in fact the nearby laundry at checo requires only a long hard climb for soft water [Music] thank you there's no Hilton pool here but there is a hope and a desire [Music] 20 minutes from the luxury of Victoria Peak row after row of shanks and Hungry Eyes statistics say that the population of Hong Kong is now near 5 million Souls more than half of this population under 15 years of age [Music] Hong Kong actually consists of more than 235 small Islands only a relatively few are inhabited Hong Kong is a city of unbelievably rich men and of hundreds of thousands who live in poverty like this to the million and a half refugees here The Colony offers safety from China's new Masters but often at the price of near starvation in a tin can house without Plumbing electricity or heat but with hope [Music] more than 150 thousand of Hong Kong's population live on boats to the tourists the attractive sampans and junks make good cameras up to the Chinese this is their whole world some of the small sand pans house eight to ten in a family the larger junks house several small junks and Sam fans sell the necessities of life from boat to boat many of the large boats serve dual purposes transportation in the daytime and fishing vessels at night children 8 and 10 years of age maneuvering sand fans through the hustle and bustle of Aberdeen but they also go to school and do more than their share families together the small children are tied so they cannot get too near the water in case they're ready to fall overboard right here a marriage ceremony is accompanied by the usual 10 000 firecrackers from Macau the Chinese are hard workers and the drying of fruits and unbelievably hot peppers is Big Business both for local consumption sport to our chinatowns wow [Music] most of the people who live in the settlement at Aberdeen are refugees from mainland China drying selling eating the Harvest of land and sea is also big business and here at Aberdeen you not only enjoy the sights and sounds of Hong Kong but also the scent of this cruel life [Music] hey you can enjoy The Taste of Hong Kong too in the taipak floating restaurant in the center of all this where the real Chinese food is served at its ultimate best [Applause] [Music] it's not all Splish Splash for the youngster nearly all of them attend school different perhaps from what we are used to but a school in a true sense of the word many of these junks bring fresh produce from China they come in Daily for the colony produces only one tenth of the food consumed by its tenants on this same Waterfront coulees swept and swear the varicose veins bulging on legs which have borne for too long too heavy for man their world is a low one filled with violence over matters of a few pennies and their faces are marked by it but with the Eternal strength of the Chinese they seldom lose that last bit of human dignity which differentiates them from animal and what about tomorrow the British are building vast resettlement areas in Hong Kong and in the new territories and while the rent is low the waiting list is long where there's hope and a promise more than 350 000 people live in this chaiwan resettlement area with communal baths kitchens and playgrounds for Hong Kong there's a new Hong Kong emerging with a new look to the Future and now this hydrofoil will take us near the red China Wall the East wall moments away on El Mundo foreign [Music] River the border between the new territories in mainland China across that River the end of the world foreign [Music] police station it appears from here to be a scene of beauty but down there there's barbed wire guard towers hidden within the green enclosures and Beyond red China itself [Music] lower neutral zone live the neutral people who may work on the red side and live on the free side or perhaps live in the middle or those who trade with the Reds and have special permits to allow them to cross to a certain point the farming in this area the methods have remained nearly unchanged since the invention of the plow they work long hard hours enjoy few with any Western luxuries when they are too old to work they may enjoy the first restful time in their lives [Music] foreign ERS are Hawkeyes members of a lost tribe whose women wear huge straw hats Fringe with black cloth to keep out the Sun not far from the lochmat child border is the walled city of Cam Tim the 300 year old wall city of the hakas all inhabitants of Cam Tim have one surname and all are hakkas this is the only walled city of its kind outside of red China with a camera in the bush we look directly across the forbidding border not even the Hawkeyes will be found this close to the terror of the East wall [Music] the hot guys have a dialect all their own and they differ in many ways from the Chinese as an example the women do all the work while the men stay at home one rarely sees a man working in the fields or carrying a heavy load the hakao women are seen working all over Hong Kong digging ditches building buildings so make up a considerable part of the floating population until a short time ago they frustrated all photographers by hiding their faces beneath their hat now for a Hong Kong dollar you get a cheery smile in fact the old girls will scorn at the tourist who has no at the look my child we see the barricade where those people with permits may cross to the other side for some people it's the end of the line for others beyond that gate all hope is abandoned for me it is a reminder of what Freedom really means [Music] foreign thousands of miles apart the West Mall may be easier to see than the East wall or curtain but the same feelings remain the Iron Curtain which divides post-war Germany into two opposing camps is most evident here in Berlin where East again Meets West Tower after Tower keeping a watchful eye on the free German when on August 13 1961 this barbed wire was installed no one thought it could possibly remain for very long the first blocks of cement went in at the Brandenburg tour tanks and a half dozen Armored Cars took up positions underneath the giant six columned Arch under the glare of white floodlights the wall began and barbed wire was strung all the way to potstimmer plots more of the wall in a moment on El Mundo [Music] the wall itself takes different shapes and forms here it is an empty building bricked up overnight from within without removing windows or blinds [Music] foreign [Music] at some points it's possible to stand 20 feet from an East German Center but not without the fear of being shot children play along this street when the American GIS are present and they seem to wonder what it's all about why does there have to be War walls fear why can't men live together in Freedom and harmony I couldn't answer their questions but there must be an answer foreign [Music] foreign [Music] asks what is the world done through its victims the people of East Germany not surprisingly the deprivation of human rights which the wall represents the barring of Western Scientific and cultural contacts the inability to escape from the incessant barrage of hate the West propaganda have twisted and perverted the lives of the unfortunate people of East Germany in Striking ways potsdammer plots as it is today as it was then today it's deserted [Music] on this pre-river there stands a gunboat with full crew on duty day and night waiting watching perhaps hoping for someone to violate the Border those who have tried and been successful are now free men some have not been so successful other gun votes patrolling the entire River area back and forth always looking toward the west side [Music] this may be a good picture spot for the tourists and a chance for the West Berliner to look over the wall and remember to hope for the day when Germany will be reunited freely without walls or barriers [Music] ironically in the midst of all this is a Russian Monument guarded by two Russian soldiers day and night who are in turn guarded by several British soldiers and just a few meters from the Brandenburg tour foreign [Music] for the people of the East and West Berlin there stands the symbol of Victory and peace as opposed to the gunboat in the tower of fear someday the wall will come down for the people of common tongue and common aspirations cannot be kept apart forever foreign [Music] thank you [Applause] foreign
