[Music] more and more businesses are using the IBM system 36 here's how three very different companies are using the small powerful computer that goes where the work [Music] is the stories are told in the user's own words the first story is about a small company where complex administrative tasks challenge the efficiency of the modern medical office the report from your tests was very good and I'm encouraged by the results case in point Dr Thomas Phillips radiologist Atlanta Georgia I'm a physician I want to practice medicine and I don't want to be bothered with day-to-day problems with Billing System 36 allows me to do [Music] that I don't Bill a patient until their treatment is finished the Medicare payments take on the average about 3 months to come back to me after I send the bill to them so with um a direct hookup with their computer the turnaround time for those funds is 10 days rather than 90 days Linda this patient had a question about her account that I couldn't answer and I thought you might be able to let me just see if her accounts in the system yet to handle administrative work Dr Phillips created a company called Atlanta oncology Associates I have all the information I need Linda Lively is the chief administrator my main concern and our main concern is uh third party reimbursement to help our patients take care of their balances from the services that they receive in our department Mr Talon we have all your information in the system now so we'll file your insurance for you we can go system to system with some other IBM compatible uh insurance companies Medicare is our biggest third party reimbursal and they our IBM and we're able to go paperless with them one of the biggest advantages is the fact that we have a printer on site in the past we've had to wait for paper that we needed perhaps insurance forms or bills to come from another location if a patient walks into my office now and says that they need a statement for their insurance company for their own purposes or for uh whatever reason I can walk to my printer and and generate it right then and hand it to the patient which saves a lot of time you turn the light off because the system 36 is so efficient Dr Phillips has reduced administrative time which can now be spent on patient care and treatment when we ordered the system 36 we didn't really know what to expect and we were quite pleasantly surprised with the size of this thing two guys brought in these two boxes and lo and behold the entire system was was right there it was very easy to unate and uh if Dr Phillips and I could plug it in I would imagine just about anybody could I guess I was like a child at Christmas I wanted to see what was in those boxes so I uncrated everything which was very simple and U plugged everything in and connected all the wires uh without any instruction per se and I found it to be an extremely simple um thing to do we have total control over when we want to build and that makes it a whole lot easier uh in terms of collections because you can uh operate your business to suit your needs and not what suit somebody else's the next company is a big company Morrison kudon is one of the largest publicly held firms in the engineering design and construction business mk's interests are diverse they include coal mining manufacturing ship building and repair at the company's world headquarters in Boise Idaho the system 36 is at work in new ways we're here this morning to talk about the installation of a our system 36 Gordon Alman is mk's director of corporate Information Systems he and members of his staff assessed the 36 as part of the company's highly computerized operation experience has a Ron Duncan is assistant director of corporate Information Systems of software and hardware at a remote site it's almost as if IBM went around looking at our remote job sites trying to find out what we uh really needed in a product and they came up with it we are currently using the uh small end of the system 36 product line at a remote job site tying it back into a larger system 36 this larger system 36 is tied into our home office 4341 complex this is mk's corporate data center where we provide the communications interfaces necessary to support the system 36 the 36s are integrated into IBM 4300s giving system 36 operators access to the company's database Lynn what do you think about software I agree Lynn freeze is system support manager for Morrison kudon when our system 36 first arrived we were very surprised at the small size our first thoughts were that no way is this going to be able to handle any of our jobs here at MK but as it turns out it really is a very powerful computer I like the size it's very small I like the fact that it takes regular 110 electricity I myself am not mechanically inclined and it was easy for me to install Hardware shouldn't be a problem as the company's Hardware support manager is Doyle Weisner we at Morrison Canon have found that fluctuating power is a problem at our remote construction sites the system 36 has a high tolerance to fluctuations in voltage so it's being used by Morrison kudon in places where power is often unreliable anything happening out there yeah um the system 36 is a very Compact and reliable machine where running the general ledger accounts payable payroll and inventory systems measuring the value of the 36 to mk's construction business here once again is Gordon Alman it looks like the system 36 fits into mk's overall strategy which includes taking the computer system to where the work is [Music] worldwide [Music] good afternoon web the last company is a growing company web seal Incorporated of Rochester New York manufactures highquality gaskets for a variety of customers the company has about 30 employees and sales approaching $3 million a year the company is run by its founder Don Hurley and his son John who tells why they chose the system 36 we weren't computer people and we needed someone who could help us through the rough spots it was sort of one of those gut reaction things that you just know it's going to work so you go with it we needed a system that gave us better Communications and allowed the computer to move out of the accounting office and into where our business really is which is on the sales desk and out in the menu ufacturing plant and in the warehouse we needed a system that would allow us to get that invoice out the day the product is shipped enhancing our cash flow what does the company's founder Don Hurley think of the system 36 without it would be the compan would' be in turmoil uh we just would not be able to handle the volume we would not be able to service our customers we would not be able to maintain a balanced inventory without this constant input that we receive before installing the 36 Webb used an IBM system 32 the conversion was easy the move from the uh 32 to the 36 was much easier and less traumatic than we had expected given the fact that other than Linda our operator no one had ever really touched the keyboard before the company's DP coordinator Linda Bernett we set it up and within an hour we were sitting at the keyboards actually doing work uh the L downstairs Betty Who to my knowledge has never worked on
