[Music] around the [Music] world Max the World Series nearly 65,000 in Yankee Stadium see Casey stingle match wits with Walt Alon as the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers go at it again opening game hero is Joe Collins yank first baseman he measures a Don Nukem pitch and Joe belts it far out to Right Center Duke Snider chases it to the wall and leaps desperately but it's over the fence into the bleachers for Colin's second home run of the game giving the Yanks a 6 to3 [Applause] lead the Brooks are baffled by Whitey Ford then in the eighth Jackie Robinson suddenly takes off and steals home in a highly disputed play that puts Brooklyn only a run behind Yogi Bara differs violently with fire Bill Summers on the decision his War dance has no effect but the Yanks win the opener 6 [Music] to5 still at the stadium for game two and in a big fourth inning rally after Brooklyn gets one run the Yankees score twice and fill the bases Billy Lowe's pitches Tommy burn belts a single to center it drives in two runs the Yankee Southpaw wins his own game beating the Brooks 4-2 [Music] next day they switch to Brooklyn and Roy Campanella finally hits his stride Bob Turley pitching for the Yanks campy bombs it into the Left Field seats his first hit of the series but a big one it drives Peewee Reese home ahead of him and gets the Brooks off in front in the first [Applause] inning the YK strike right back Bill Ruto up Ruto singles and Bill scan heads for home with the tying run the ball beats him but he knocks it out of campy's hands and scores but the Brooks win it 8 to3 the flat Bush faithful pack in again for the fourth game and in the fifth inning Reese beats out a hit to Collins to put two Dodgers on base Donny Cooks faces Duke Snider the Duke PS one high far it's a Homer from the time it leaves the bat the wallup breaks up a close game the Brooks Square the series by winning 8 to five now the crucial fifth game a record crowd on hand Bob Grim is tagged by Sandy amoros for a home run with a man aboard in the second inning and the Dodgers are out in front again as they surge on with their Furious comeback [Applause] Casey stangle nervously Paces the Yankee Dugout when Snider comes up again Grim lets go Snider whales another his fourth Homer of the series the fans go wild as the Dodgers win 5 to three and lead the series three games to two so it's back to Yankee Stadium and this time the Yankees have their backs to the wall but young Carl Spooner is wild in the first inning and walks Gil McDougall after passing rosuto Yogi Barett connects for a single through the infield sending rosuto home with a run for the Yanks McDougall at third base sper still in trouble Hank Bowers Mikes out another single and McDougall is in with another Yankee [Applause] T now Spooner faces moose scin there goes one out to right field it's a long drive and it's into the stands for a three-run homer that's five runs for the Yankees in the first inning all they get but it's plenty they win the sixth game 5 to one and send the series to the Limit [Music] [Applause] another Mammoth crowd for the seventh and payoff game in the fourth inning Roy Campanella is up there against yank Southpaw Tommy burn campy lines one into left for the first Brooklyn hit of the game and legs it into second base for a two bagger two are out when Gil Hodges gets to bat the Brooks first sacker comes through with a single to left that drives campy over the plate for the Dodgers after Reese opens the sixth with a single Snider sacrifices and knocks the ball out of scan's hand for an error that puts both Runners on Bas that finishes burned the left-hander takes the long walk in he's relieved by Bob grim hoders delivers again this time it's a long drive to serve in right center for a sacrifice fly ree scores easily to make it Brooks to Yanks nothing the Yanks snarl back in their half they have two aboard Bara up with nobody out and Johnny Padres is in a [Applause] hole Barra slices one down into the left field Corner Sandy amoros makes a long run and stabs it with one hand then fires the ball to Reese and the runner is doubled off first pulling Padres out of a bad Jam Padre's goes on mowing the Y down and now as the crowd Rises he's heading for the last wind up Elston Howard grounds to Reese the last yank is out the Brooks win two to nothing champions of the world for the first time in history the Delirious Dodgers mob their 23-year-old Ace and Maul each other in a frenzy they come back to win after losing the first two [Applause] games they come charging into the dressing room babbling hysterically that boy was Grand boys he was just terrific that's AB how do the club feel they feel they have this one oh Lord uh no you just don't feel if you have it you have to go out there and Win It Padre's the hero feel wonderful I don't know what I should say I just feel great you feel nervous out there no I felt good all the way I I was calm and uh I was like a poor out there today a real poor somebody like re Glee Grows in Brooklyn the bums have beaten the bombers we'd like to introduce someone you've all heard of many times perhaps you know him well already his name your ballot your ballot is your most distinguished servant loyal faithful and so tight lipped that no one can find out how you instruct him in matters of politics and your ballot is accredited as few are by the United States [Music] Constitution the interservice tennis championships at Quantico Virginia Spectators stream in for the final matches including some VIPs such as assistant secretary ofir Smith who was welcomed by Brigadier General Paige among the Watchers is the Widow of the donor of the leech trophy Airman second class Whitney Reed from Alam California meets Grant golden of the army former Big 10 champion and top seated player Grant hits out now they're at Match Point Reed has held the upper hand all the way and he finishes it off with a sharp placement that makes him the service singles tennis champion the winner receives the congratulations lead now the doubles final it's Reed and ditzler of the Air Force in the far court against golden and fly of the Army on this side the Air Force sweeps the courts in this tournament their team wins the leech cup with a total of 11 points with army navy and Marines trailing in that order [Applause] medallions to the doubles winners from assistant secretary Smith Whitney Reed singles Champion gets the risle bowl now let's take a quick trip to the center of American tennis the Westside Tennis Club at Forest Hills New York for the Davis Cup challenge round between Australia and the United States the Americans brought the trophy back last December after Australia held it 4 years now nearly 13 ,000 witnessed the American defense in the opening singles match Vic SAS of the US versus Ken Roswell of Australia here's SAS [Music] serving roseall quickly wins the first set 6-3 now it's roswall serving he takes the second set eight after a long fight SAA [Applause] serving Nick makes a gritty comeback demonstrated by this stirring rally and takes the third set 6-4 Sous puts up a game struggle but he can't hold the pace and and after the rest period roswall applies the pressure again Vic Falls going after the last shot roswall wins the deciding set 6-2 and Australia gains the first of the Five Points at issue in the second match it's Lou hod of Australia against Tony trabert for the United States trabert serving he's the Wimbleton Champion but he got his hands full hod is at the peak of his game hod serving tryber heartens The Crowd by winning the first set 6-4 trt serving and after taking the opening set Tony drops the next two to the AAS Match Point TR serves and hod wins the match 46 63 6386 Australia takes an almost insurmountable lead of two matches To None on the first [Applause] day next day the United States with its back to the wall in the all important doubles match trayer and SAS team up against hod and Rex Hartwick another big crowd on hand and a scious serves he Nets the return but it develops into a long bitter struggle the first set seesaws on to 12 all before the Americans finally win it 1412 tryber [Applause] serving SAS puts away a wicked smash H serving and again those determined Aussies come back This brilliant shot by hod puts them ahead two sets To None now SAS is in trouble at match point for Australia on his serve Hartwig raises the chalk with the winning shot that's three straight matches for Australia the Invaders from down under sweep the Americans off the court and the big trophy is headed back there after only 8 months in America Captain Harry Hoffman has a right to be proud of his [Applause] boys the program was different at Forest Hills two weeks later it was trir against roseall in an international final for the United States Championship Tony had recovered from a back injury that handicapped him in Davis Cup play trir serving and you can see he's back in form trebert serving again another winning shot he had already crushed the other a this time Ken comes through with a winning placement trir serving and just watch this sparkling Exchange Tony polishes it off with another great shot now Tony's at match point he completes his sweep of the Australians and blasts to the title without the loss of a set king of all the courts he surveys Tony trabber [Applause] the Calgary Stampede famous Wild West show in Alberta Canada of course there's a rodeo to separate the men from the boys and the Riders from their [Applause] [Music] mounts it's rough this one's foot is caught and he's kicked in the head crowds pack in to see the Chuck Wagon races one of the most exciting features of the show just like the old Oregon Trail days only more so the wagons start from the infield and get on the track where they can so it's a real freefor all look out there's one of the ships of the Prairie wrecked on the takeoff it's every driver for himself without Riders added to make it more confusing the only thing that could make it tougher would be Indians shooting at them with bows and arrows a wild charge over the little track for a modest amount of prize money American and Canadian Ranch hands putting on a thrilling show the wild west back again Move Over Buffalo Bill now let's visit the San Francisco Palace for bull fighting tailored to the American taste 19-year-old Wanita aparisi Queen of the Mexican bull Rings displays her cap work to a crowd of 10,000 the senorita makes with the Motions of a real bull fight suddenly El Toro starts to take it seriously and Wanita is tossed for a loss again the Mexican girl advances to the prey El Toro can take this sort of thing or leave it and he leaves [Music] it we don't know who won but Wanita claims the [Music] victory then the crowd sees Indio Apache famous in Portugal for his Bull Ring buffoonery Indio matches his sense of humor against the Bulls unpleasant disposition and it's a Target El Toro just can't miss next Indio goes in for little bull wrestling this is going from end to [Music] end well we may as well say it he really throws the [Music] bull PS there's an ambulance waiting not for the Tori adors just in case the bull gets [Applause] tired and still more Bulls the folding of the Bulls in Pomona Spain traditional preliminary to a bull fight and no pink tea either see that young fell being taken for a ride on the [Music] horns as they near the plaza the race becomes more Furious the climax comes when the steers with rubber balls on their horns are loosed in the arena crowded with Reckless young fellows they yearn to become meadors as your boys want to be big league baseball players but these beasts are nothing easy for ameter boy against Bull and no trick seems too bold for the Spanish Youth and this part of the show is considered tame compared with the flight through the streets pull up an armchair I'll take [Applause] Checkers Los Angeles was the setting for the national AA diving and and waim capilia of Mexico the Pan-American Champion staged a hot competition with Gary tobian of Los Angeles for the 10 meter platform title joh Harper of Palo Alto was another strong [Music] Contender here's capilia the defending champion in a full twisting one and a half pike the same Dive by tobian [Music] capilia in a one and a half with full twist this intricate Double Twist by tobian helped the 19-year-old Californian bring the title back to the United States capilia was second Harper [Applause] third the start of the 200 meter freestyle race in the field was Ford cono the hawan holder of many records cono leading as expected but another great Hawaiian swimmer Bill woy sticks with him now they're coming to the last turn and Wolsey on the far side shoots out for the last leg like a bullet out of a gun and into the lead that's Wolsey a student in Indiana and one of the best swimmers who ever took a ducky the 19-year-old Hawaiian now a junior sprints on to beat out cono in a big surprise and it's a new meat record 2 minutes 8 and 21 [Music] seconds cono second George onia Another Hawaiian third now the Big Splash for another big race this is the 400 m about a quar of a mile and those same Hawaiian Rivals cono and woie are at it again cono leading again and for a study of superlative freestyle form you'd have to look far to do better one of the turns and notice how Woolsey always seems to gain on them now he's pressing cono [Music] again the Sprint for the final Mark woy is a terrific finisher and is slowly gaining on cono another upset no cono touches in just ahead of Wolsey to win in 4 minutes 38 and 710 still a great Champion Ford [Music] cono curtain a crowd of more than 10,000 jammed moscow's gorki Park to see a contest between weightlifters from the United States and Russia the American team was greeted cordially by the people of the Soviet as they prepared to match muscles with the Russian athletes the keenly interested Russian fans saw Tommy Kono of Sacramento California score for the United States in the middleweight division on his three lifts Kono hoisted 17 pounds more than his opponent Yuri [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] dunov David Shepard of York penil long a stronghold of strong men gave the United States another victory in the middle heavyweight [Applause] [Music] class Arad voro Shepherd's opponent fell 56 lb short of the American total lift Shephard raised a total of 1,046 lb on his three [Music] hoists the climax of of the contest was the appearance of Paul Anderson 340 lb Atlas from tcoa Georgia Anderson broke all records by handling the barbell loaded at 422 lbs on a single lift the mighty Georgian forced up the prodigious weight as The Spectators gasped and became virtually a national Russian hero overnight [Music] [Applause] [Music] King football is back 35,000 in Pittsburgh for the season opener featuring a big intersectional game the pit Panthers and the California bears and here's California kicking the lid off the new season with pit receiving on the third play Bob Greer fumbles and California recovers Hugh Maguire California quarterback hides the ball on a bootleg play and scampers for 12 yards Maguire a surprise starter for the Bears flings a 30-yard pass to Bill Balaton for a touchdown and California lead seven to nothing salvatera shoots a pass to Cory cost for 35 yds and hit is knocking at the door it's Greer plunging over and they're all even seven and seven at [Applause] [Music] halftime Pit's power begins to tell late in the game c Rambles for 15 yards as the last quarter begins Dick Bowen takes a pitch out and dashes 23 yds before he's ruled out of Bounds at the five pit surges on to win 27 to7 with salvatera pass to Bowen the payoff [Music] [Applause] play Lady wrestlers have come back and nearly 3,000 in Chicago assembled to see them grapple in that City for the first time in 20 years it's the blondes versus the brunettes in an Australian Team tag match and a doesn't take long to see that some of these ladies are no ladies Millie Stafford from Minneapolis one time basketball player and ice skater gets real rough repeating for the benefit of the late [Applause] arrivals the brunette is May Weston and after what she's been taking she thinks she has a kick coming most of the spectators are women and it's plain that ladies do not Prefer Blondes no matter what gentlemen may think getting a Molly May gives her a very hard time and then pins her shoulders to the mat to even up the Falls one for each side now it's Penny Banner in the ring for the blondes after giving Chona Lair a trip to the mat she learns how it feels when a penny is Tau [Applause] the brunettes are the goodies in this battle the blondes are the villainesses now for a ride on a flying [Music] man the tides turn fast here's the Team Angle the brunettes make a tag and change competence Penny doesn't like it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] but no matter who's in there with her she's a very bad Penny they're all mused up by now and things look black for Penny especially her opponent's hair but there's life in her [Applause] yet penny a former water skier taught Judo to the women Marines she teaches this Brunetta thing or two also it's two two out of three for the blondes and the baddies [Music] Triumph the dream horse race of the year at Chicago's Washington Park Willie Shoemaker and Eddie araro riding again $100,000 take all match between swaps and NASA here's Sunny Jim Fitz Simmons nasha's trainer giving final instructions to our Carol nashaa seeking Revenge from swaps for his only defeat of the year in the Kentucky [Music] Derby out of the gate AR Carol laying the whip on nashaa and William Woodward Jr's Colt bounding into the lead with Shoemaker trying to keep swaps up with him on the outside in the derby the California horse number two LED all the way this time it's [Music] [Applause] [Music] different nashaa still shows the way as they swing around the first turn araro rating his horse brilliantly Shoemaker trying hard to keep swaps up with him and now going down the backstretch swamps takes his Challenge and moves up to cut the lead to a neck but that's as far as he gets he can't head nashaa all down the backstretch Shoemaker tries to take the Kentucky Derby winner to the front but each time araro steps on the gas and keep nashaa nashaa still showing the way heading into the last [Music] turn the big test as they come off the final turn into the stretch everybody knows it's now or never for swamps the coast speeds time and nasua keeps increasing his lead while swaps drifts inside toward the rail [Applause] our Carol keeps driving nasua and the Eastern horse pulls farther ahead with every stride as he [Music] rolls it's nashaa all the way winning almost as he [Music] pleases sweep revenge for Nashua and our Carol a jackpot of 100 grand for Woodward [Music]
