Description: Housing outs, SavannahUrban renewal in Savannah. Part of WGTV's Environmental Health series. Mrs. Alexander, a social services case worker who checks on the elderly and helps determine if their housing is unsafe or inadequate, and discusses the difficulties of getting the elderly to move from longtime neighborhoods. Mr. [Cohen?] a landlord, discusses upkeep of houses, relative to county construction codes for the houses he rents out, and why the county health department is concerned with electrical systems in those houses. Scenes of dilapidated houses and "notice to vacate" at 307 and 309 E. Bolton St. [later demolished]. African American boy rollerskates through neighborhood. Man raking leaves. Mrs. Alexander speaks about younger people with families and that they tend to move more often, that rents conform to the type of housing, that the government subsidizes slum landlords in the sense that renters on government assistance are paying rent to those landlords. She has a very heavy caseload and little time to provide extra services. Dr. W.D. Lundquist, Commissioner of the Chatham County Health Dept., speaks about how health factors can be attributed to housing. Safety factors (poor wiring, poor heating), disease issues from poor sanitation factors, psychological and emotional disturbances. Discusses correlation between poor housing and poor health. Mrs. Jackson, speaks about changes in her neighborhood where she has lived most of her long life, how to avoid neighborhood deterioration, and what she thinks will happen to her neighborhood in the future.
