Description: Filmed over a five-week period at New York City's Metropolitan Hospital, Wiseman's cinema verit©♭ documentary tracks what occurs in the emergency, operating and receiving rooms, the wards and outpatient clinics. The cases depicted illustrate the degree to which medical expertise, availability of resources, organizational considerations and the nature of communication among the staff and patients affect the delivery of appropriate health care. They also reveal the interconnectness of hospital responsibilities to the city's social conditions outside its doors and to other social agencies, for example, welfare and children's services. The film concludes with a Mass conducted in the hospital's chapel and attended by patients and staff.
