Description: This silent 8mm home movie was shot in 1962 by a U.S. serviceman based at the U.S. Naval Station in Rota, Spain, also known as Naval Station Rota. NAVSTA Rota has been in use since 1953 when Spanish dictator Francisco Franco strengthened relations with the United States in order to improve local economies. The installation now covers more than 6,000 acres (24 km2) on the northern shore of Cadiz, an area recognized for its strategic, maritime importance over the centuries. The film begins with images shot in Southern Spain, including the Seville Cathedral at 42:00. At 1:39 the Amerias Deportes store is visible along with the La Catalan hotel. At 1:34 the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See with the Giralda bell tower is visible. At 2:20 the exterior of the Alcazar is shown. At 3:45 an American (presumably) jumps rope through a hula hoop. At 4:28 beach scenes are shown. At 5:23 the German Club is shown. At 5:40 the numerous quonset huts of the Rota Naval Station are seen.At 7:25 a man smokes a cigarette and leans against an Army truck.
