This film reverses the traditional story of the ethnic child assimilating into North American culture by placing a white child in a new cultural environment. Ten-year-old Kathy has just moved from the country into an urban Chinese American neighborhood. At school, Kathy feels lonely and isolated. When she is invited to a classmate's birthday party, she is again confronted by all her fears and superstitions.
