HIT AND RUN INVESTIGATION

foreign [Music] to here in a hit and run investigation but with real attention to details and the proper procedures you've got a good chance of nailing Your Man Jacob's Heaven advised you of your rights would you tell me how your vehicle sustain the front end damage all that that's nothing I was up in Utah last week and I hit a deer what about the new headlight there on the right hand side well you don't think I'd want you guys to give me a ticket for driving around with one light do you I had to replace it what did you uh have it replaced well I had that replaced up in Utah on my way back like I said I hit a deer you know and I didn't want to get any tickets or anything so I had a new headlight put in that's all there is to it you see what happened yeah I was coming out of my house the most immediate job of the investigation is to get the stories of eyewitnesses and their description of the hit and run driver and vehicle he uh hit a guy right here in the crosswalk and uh the body came over here and uh he went down I saw some water looking out the radiator it went down to the first corner here and made a right can you describe the van it was about a white uh 62 White Band I guess you happen to get a look at the license plate um yeah I think they were owed to the first two numbers on the license but that's all I remember every eyewitness should be interviewed describe that van for me yeah it was white officer that van was great no it was white you sure it was fun excuse me ma'am I'll talk to you in just a moment would you mind stepping over here it's usually best to separate Witnesses in the first go-round then bring them together later to discuss contradictions in their statements in an argument people often act more sure of something than they really are there's anything special about this vanity or special equipment on it yeah it had a sticker in the back window with three A's I think it's the auto club any detail no matter how small can help put the pieces together to eliminate hundreds of cars of the same general description and as soon as you've got anything to go on [ __ ] it 26 I have a description of suspect vehicle photographs are usually called for in hit run cases particularly if there's a fatality or Serious injury okay guys let's take some pictures now physical evidence is next on the list find the headlight the pieces fit and you found the hit run car okay [Applause] or other evidence at the point of impact can help put it all together okay and then the next one skid marks even a bit of mud or vegetation shaken loose from under the fender might help in locating the vehicle or identifying it okay I did it the back spilled radiator fluid might tell you that the hit run car isn't going very far or any sign of disabling like an oil spill or evidence of a blown tire and sometimes slow radiator or oil drip has even LED straight to the vehicle involved or at least established the direction taken thank you very much it's of course important to try to find the route taken by the fleeing driver and if his car was banged up enough people along the way may have noticed it through either noise or appearance but aside from physical evidence and Witnesses pure logic can help to close in on the hit-run driver right now this guy was probably in route to work on this end of town so he's going to travel this area we ought to set up priorities here on certain streets because he's going to probably stay off of mountain make Washington a priority One to Washington number one Orange Grove would be a priority One More School number one and Foothill one now in case he stays on some uh less heavily traveled streets let's make Whitfield a priority too okay with field two and Villa will make a two now in case he really goes out of the way to stay out of that area let's make uh Altadena Drive a priority three okay with these listed the way we have them we ought to be able to set up something and watch for this guy about that same time in the mornings okay another possibility for closing in of course is through motor vehicle registration checking out local registry by make and year and if you've got it any letters or numbers in the license can at least eliminate most cars of the same kind [Applause] and your own Department's crime reports can sometimes come up with some interesting information too like a report of a vehicle stolen before the accident and reported after it could be an attempted cover-up same goes for accident reports that might be trying to explain how come the hit-run car got banged up and could be worth looking into particularly if it fits any of the car description you may have succeeded in putting together he must have died simply from a massive internal hemorrhoid then with a fatality or a serious injury there's some information to get from the victim doctor is there anything to indicate from the maybe imprints on the body of Phineas to what type of vehicle or anything about the vehicle that's stroking yes it looks like you got the bruise that is found on the right side of the pelvic area is about six inches wide and that could be from a bumper that could be from a commercial type vehicle I see and doctor from your medical examination could you determine whether this victim was in good health prior to his death yes he was in good health before this accident happened and the close of the victim can sometimes turn up some very helpful information from the crime lab thank you very much doctor yeah we'll send you the reports as soon as my secretary's finished reading at about 905 in the morning a felony hit and run Collision occurred at Hill and Mountain the victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the scene suspect vehicle last observed eastbound on Mountain from Hill the suspect vehicle is described as a 1960-1965 van is purportedly white in color there was a broken letter D was found at the scene of the collision and it is felt that this letter D came from the grill of the suspect automobile damage should generally be to the left front end of the vehicle there were both glass and water found in the street and that would lead us to believe that there was probably radiator damage as well as a broken headlight or two Witnesses remember seeing a small decal in the rear window of the van and the decal head on an AAA probably American Automobile Club suspect is described only as male caucasian 30 to 35 years of age with dark hair on the material submitted to the crime lab indicates that the suspect vehicle was painted red prior to having been painted white investigating officers are requesting primary surveillance of Washington Boulevard Orange Grove Boulevard Foothill Boulevard for the suspect vehicle I'm going to leave a stack of these wanted notices on the desk so that you can pick them up as you file out and we've also mailed them out to the Body and Fender shops and some of the some of the service stations the man hit by the car you remember that the brochure have you seen anybody like this or any car like this really no we haven't nothing at all not yet okay well listen if you get any information will you be sure to give us a call all right we'll watch for it okay thank you very much all right yes hey did you call about our uh bullets in there uh that we sent out regards to the hit and run vehicle yes I did I see did uh did you get a description of this car or anything yes yes I did I've got the I got to put them down here just just oh good yeah it's a white man and I have a license number here uh yeah you can go ahead and take it piece of valuable evidence for court if Citizen and you initial it date it yes it's the white uh Ford van Mr Jacobs can you account for the whereabouts of this vehicle and yourself in the morning of May 12th approximately 9 A.M well I don't think I want to answer any more questions at this time I think I'll just hold up they'll have to place you under arrest for investigation a felony Hit and Run take your hands out of your pockets hey is all this necessary I got a wife and kid inside I don't want him to see this oh this is uh well hey I'll walk out like a gentleman yes the Long Trail sometimes hit and run investigation but there often is a trail and if you stay on it with the right procedures and logic chances are it will wind up in an unhappy ending
