The film begins by reviewing unmanned missions and research projects, such as the Mars Exploration Program and meteorological satellites. It then chronicles the objectives and achievements of the four manned space missions conducted that year: Apollo 9, the first test flight of the entire Apollo spacecraft; Apollo 10, the dress rehearsal for the lunar landing; Apollo 11, the first mission to land on the Moon; and Apollo 12, the second mission to land on the Moon.
