High School: Your Challenge (1952)

[Music] hi how you been boy how are you what are you doing around here oh just looking around I thought you were still working at The Print Shop no no I quit they wouldn't give me a raise all they had me do is pull proofs they act as if you need a high school education just a set tight well I suppose you do need English some printing work well hey what you got there new year book nice huh yeah I guess it's all right Bing's pretty poor it's good material we used to do this kind of stuff where I worked say that means you're graduating sure what do you know I would have been graduating now too most of the fellas still around oh well some of the guys quit after you did but most of them stayed on things haven't changed much what do you know well I'll be seeing you Mac yeah so long Johnny take it easy Johnny Cory what a change hi bar hi Hi man whoops excuse me oh hello ma excuse me Mr ham did you want to see me yes I'd like to we go right on in I'll be back in just a minute thanks Mr Hamlin guidance you'd be surprised how much guidance and help you can get if you only ask for it they have all kinds of tests and things to help you choose a vocation and help you make up your mind about college and you can get help in planning your schoolwork and your activities and and everything huh I remember the first time I came in here two years ago I wasn't looking for help well I did try working that summer I was a helper on a construction job liked it all right too but seeing the engineers and architects around I got to think thinking I realized I could never be anything but a helper unless I got more education hey Ma let's go a lot more so I made up my mind to come back here in the fall and stay in school all the way boy what a lucky break for me that I met Mr Hamlin when I did and I've been in here lots of times since then well Ma you send my yearbook for me Mr Hond you bet see was that John Cory I saw out there in the Hall that's right you coming back to school no just visiting huh that's right just visting I thought so you know once they leave they seldom come back well there you are thanks a lot Mr Hammond thanks well thanks all that just for my autograph for your autograph and and for everything are your plans all set for the fall yes sir I'm I'm going to State College you know you help me decide well write to me and let me know how you get along I sure will Mr Hammond so long so long man there are lots of teachers like that they'll help you in any way they can if you ask for help sometimes you can get help without asking Miss Moore my home room teacher she's always helping somebody out she's a real friend hi hi oh hello ma come in oh the new Silver Street may I see it sure will you sign it too Miss Moore I'd love to may I look through it first sure you see not just a teacher a friend oh this is priceless look at Sally I can remember one time last year when she helped me I was in here studying like crazy and oh my it's a beautiful spring day yes it is you know you've been studying awfully hard this semester ma well I want to get as much out of it as I can Miss Moore well yes that's fine that's very fine but you know you've hardly spent any time at all in activities they're worthwhile too well how would you like to be in the room softball team in the intramural League oh no Miss Mor I'm not good enough oh you don't have to be good the idea is just to get some fun get a little exercise you know you could stand to get out more what do you know she actually advised me to spend more time in activities so I tried softball had a lot of fun at it got so I played pretty well good exercise a change from studying and I made a lot of friends that way the activities around your school give you a lot of chances to learn extra things you shouldn't pass them by and when you get advice from your teachers that's worth thinking about too there you are ma thanks Miss Moore you're welcome boy if you just stop and think of all the things you can get out of high school you'll begin to see how lucky you really are to be there honor Ro the fellows who went into service I thought once of joining them I remember the answer I got at the recruiting office you stick where you are fella get your high school education first then you'll be able to do things in the Army you get on better after you're out yes high school first you need it for life in service and afterwards you need the courses algebra Civics English History and all the rest you need need the activities and all the other things that go on around here things that help prepare you for life student council elections you need that kind of experience in school to be a good citizen field trip those are always fun they take you into places you wouldn't see on your own get you in the habit of noticing the world around you graduation that'll be the day and it'll stand for a lot afterward yes High School is the minimum for a good life where you been I've been looking all over for you been getting some autographs how about yours okay oh silly there's plenty of time for that later let's go outside we still have 10 minutes to lunch period left yes the day you get your yearbook is a big day in fact any day is a big one if it's the day you realize just how much High School really means to you there it is our high school oh maybe yours doesn't look quite like this one but the same kinds of things go on on the classes where you get the basic knowledge and skills you need for living the activities where you make friends and learn to make good use of your leisure time the offices and conference rooms where you get advice and help toward planning your life why the very Halls where you make real friends and learn to live with people it's a wonderful place your high school it's your big chance to get ready for work and play and a full rich [Music] life
