[Applause] [Music] Watch it, Squirt. Here comes an easy one. Uh, I missed again. >> Well, go get it. >> No way. I'm sick of running after the ball. I'm no good at baseball and I'm quitting. You want to play football? Sure. I love football cuz I get to tackle you. When you think of how you're growing, it should come as no surprise. The more we learn about ourselves, the more we realize it helps to be health. We're growing health. It helps to be healthine. There's lots of folks who help us grow. We'll help ourselves because we know if we're happy and healthy, too, our bodies will do what we want them to. It helps to be healthy. We're growing healthy. It helps to be healthy. [Music] [Applause] We all enjoy playing. Maybe we can't always agree and want to play, but it's great to give your muscles a workout just for the fun of it. No. >> Climbing, stretching, [Music] >> cartwheels and somersaults and slipping and sliding. >> It doesn't matter how good you are. What does matter is how good a time you have. If it makes your muscles work, it's exercise. And exercise is very important in keeping your body tip top. >> So hold on tight cuz here we go. [Music] Boy, what a workout. That was fun. All that running's made me thirsty. Me, too. Hey, what's the matter? Do you feel it? What is it? >> It's my heart. It always goes like that after I run. Feel yours. >> Mine's the same. How come? >> Give a good rope. Reach and >> exercising your muscles gives your heart a great workout. Actually, your heart is always working, whatever you're doing, asleep or awake. But until it starts beating harder, most of the time you don't even notice it. Now that we're thinking about it though, let's visit an expert who will give us a closer look at how the whole system works. >> Hello there. I'm Dr. Jonas and I have this marvelous body to show you. No, I don't mean my body. I mean the magnificent body model. >> Boy, it's nice to be in here. >> I hope it won't mind the interruption. They're always so darn busy in there. >> No time for coffee breaks. We've got a job to do. Standing on my vessel >> all together now. Push. >> Uh, I know you're busy, but quieten down. I want to talk about the heart and lungs. >> It's not fair. When will it be my turn? >> Stomach. We'll talk about you another time. Excuse you. Here, almost in the middle of the chest, is the heart. H. >> It has the very important job of pumping blood all around your body all the time. >> Hey Doc, I've got a riddle for them. >> Well, I hope it's to the point. >> Sure is. Ready? What is it that beats all by itself about 70 times a minute? Is the size of your fist? And wait for it is the strongest muscle in your whole body. They'll never get it. Huh? Did you say the heart? You're right. They're too smart. >> Yes. Well, the blood that the heart pumps around for you carries food and oxygen to every single part of your body. On this drawing, the red lines, called arteries, show how the blood gets pumped to every tiny cell. It drops the oxygen off there and then comes back to the heart along these blue lines called veins. Then the heart pumps the blood out to the lungs where the blood picks up more oxygen again. Listen, I want you to do something for me. I want you to exercise as much as you can. You know why? Cuz your exercise helps me to stay strong so I can work harder. >> It's not just you. It's us other muscles, too. >> Yeah, we all get bigger and stronger. >> Sure. Whenever the kid who owns us does some exercise. >> If I get your meaning, I think you'd like me to say that the kid who owns you has uh responsibility to you. >> Right on. >> Tell it like it is, Doc. We're as helpless as their pets. If they don't feed us and exercise us properly, it's game over. >> Well, that's rather a dramatic way of putting it, but you're quite right. You must eat the right foods for your body. It's the only one you've got. >> It's our turn now. We want to be on TV, too. >> Yes. Yes. I'm coming to you. These are the lungs, and they work very closely with your heart. Their job is to give you the air you need. They work a little bit like balloons. >> The blood that the heart sends us flows over us and picks up air with oxygen in it >> and drops off the old air that has carbon dioxide. >> Also, we know just how much air to breathe in. >> That means more for when you're running >> and less for when you're sitting. >> We like it when we have to breathe more for you. >> So, keep exercising. >> Yeah. >> Good work, lungs. I want to tell my story. >> When's it my turn? >> Uhoh. Rowdy time. I think it's time to shut up. Uh, >> I mean, close up. The magnificent body model. >> Boy, I'm glad to know my heart likes to beat like that when I exercise. >> And the pulling feeling I've got in my legs right now. Is that natural? >> Sure. It's your leg muscles. You're giving him a workout by Viking. I can feel mine, too, cuz we're exercising. You want to run, jump, skip, hop, run, jump, skip, hop. We're exercising. Exercising. with your friends all by yourself. Do it for fun or do it for help. We'reizing exercising. We want to stretch. Bend. Twist. Turn. Stretch. Bend. Twist. Turn. There you go. exercising with your friends or by yourself. Do it for fun or do it for health. We're exercising exercising. We want to push pull powing. [Music] Exercise with your friends or by yourself. Do it for fun or do it for health or exercising. Exercising. Play soccer, baseball, football. Go swimming. Soccer. Baseball. Ball. Swimming. for exercising. Exercising with your friends or by yourself. Do it by or do it for health. We're exercising. Exercising. Exercising. [Music] Exercising. [Music] I love riding. It's great when something you like also keeps you in shape. >> Yeah. It makes you wonder why people let themselves get out of shape. These days, it's so easy to ride yourself out of shape. We use cars so much, you'd sometimes think we'd forget how to walk. But we get flabby in no time if we let machines do all our work. Astronauts who ride in rocket ships know this better than anyone, so they make sure they keep in shape, even out in space. Woo! Now this is really exercising. [Music] Down here on Earth, it's just as easy to get out of shape. A lot of us like to watch TV, but when we do, we just sit there and don't move. So, get moving. You try this, too. Come on. Reach. Reach. That's it. Yeah. Row. Pull. Stretch those muscles. been sitting doing nothing and watching TV. >> Me, too. But if we try some of those exercises while we're watching, we keep our muscles moving and we won't get to feel so tired, >> right? Then we can stay up all night and watch the late shows. >> Now, hold it a minute, guys. You're forgetting something. >> It's our doctor. Hi, Dr. Jonas. Hi there, Spinner. Squirt. >> What did we forget, Dr. Jonas? We need to know cuz we're learning to keep fit. >> Well, you've learned that your body likes to exercise. >> Yeah, I love riding my bike. >> And you know that you need to relax, too. >> I like to make necklaces and count my rock collection. Is that relaxing? >> Certainly. Whatever you like to do quietly is relaxing. You kids use up a lot of energy in a day. But you forgot one thing you need to do. >> Uh, I need to eat. I need to pee. >> Yes, but you also need to sleep. >> Oh, I don't like going to bed. >> But your body does. >> Oh, so do I. I like sleeping. What's so great about sleep? When nighttime comes and we get ready to sleep, our bodies looking forward to a rest. It gives our hearts and our lungs and even our minds time to relax. People or animals makes no difference. [Music] Good night. >> Wake up, Squirt. Come on, let's go and get something to eat. I'm starving and ready to take off. >> Okay, 3 2 1 blast off. We want to run, jump, skip, hop, run, jump, skip, hop. We're exercising. Exercising with your friend all by yourself. Do it for fun or do it for help. We'reizing. Ed.
