Description: In this 1957 footage captured by cameraman Gordon Wilkison, Austin broadcast personality Cactus Pryor interviews notable Austin residents, including Driskill Manager Bob Ross, Austin City Council member Emma Long, and Texas Observer Founding Editor Ronnie Dugger. All were likely at the Driskill Hotel to attend the Headliners Club’s end of year banquet on December 27, 1957. In between lighter questions about football outcomes, Pyror asks what the United States should do in the new year to improve science education. The Soviet Union’s successful launch of Sputnik I, the first artificial satellite, in October 1957 stoked a moral panic in Western nations about a perceived technological gap between the United States and Soviet Union. The resulting “Sputnik crisis” prompted the creation of NASA and the start of the Space Race.
