when children get to the age that they want to help Mama cook I don't think that they should be discouraged now do you wonderful time and I believe the little deer should have every opportunity to explore the world around them don't you now the play yard just wait until you see the play on I always have a bonfire ready for the little deer children just love fire and I make sure that my bonfires lovely sight to watch a six-year-old take off from that roof thinking he's a space man and water how the little deers love water so water they shall have at Hazard house it isn't very deep I don't think but then it doesn't have to be deep to make statistics vital bathonets for the very little ones the pool for the waiters and just across the field a lovely deep irrigation ditch for the older ones who think that they know how to swim isn't this a lovely place don't you think this is a paradise for children you know a lot of people say a growing child has to have his share of Nicks and bruises but I don't hold with that I say if he's going to hurt himself he ought to do a real good job of it oh I'm so glad you dropped by and please feel free to send the children over anytime I'm always home as I said I just love children don't you hey [Music] from what I hear Hazard house is still there and little old Mrs Hazard is still cheerfully turning children into statistics and none of the little girls and boys who visit her live happily ever after and some of them don't live at all now I'd like to introduce Dr Harry F Dietrich of the Beverly Hills Clinic and the department of Pediatrics of the University of California medical school at Los Angeles and an authority on child accident problems Dr Dietrich in the past quarter of a century medicine and its Allied Sciences have dramatically reduced the death rates in childhood there never has been nor will there ever be a simple easy immunization against accidents and so accidents in the home area each year kill more children than pneumonia cancer tuberculosis polio or heart disease more than any disease even more than traffic accidents no sane person deliberately sets out to booby trap his home as did Mrs hazard in our Grim fairy tale but our homes and our lives are booby trapped for accidents and in the privileged privacy of the American home no one but the parents can remove those hazards they can only be prevented by parents who constantly ask themselves what can we do to prevent our child from being burned drowned crushed or poisoned gruesome thought not nearly as gruesome as the tragic effects when parents fail to recognize the seriousness of the accident problem thank you Dr Dietrich thank you you have been watching Mrs hazard's house a grim fairy tale for parents with comments by Dr Harry F Dietrich of the department and it was a real good little program honey pretty cute idea I just love those animated cartoons yeah but I think they overdid it trying to prove their point I wouldn't be too sure about that was he talking to us I was and I am well I never let's take a look around your house if you don't mind no we don't mind but I can tell you right now you won't find any child hazards in this house well it never hurts to check up every now and then let's start with the baby itself now that wooden toy she's playing with absolutely safe guaranteed to be painted with non-poisonous paint and the playpen 2 for that matter good and what about the doll what you can see for yourself not one single button or bead that you can possibly swallow and get choked on very good and what about that fascinating toy she's reaching for now what toy that worn out electric cord Cindy well honey you scared mom and dad is she all right she's all right really Jim I think you could have fixed that cord come on sweetheart well don't blame me what's the idea of putting a playpenser close to the floor plug fine now it's my fault now wait a minute hoop now now just a minute you're both right and Joe both wrong the playpen should not have been so close to the floor plug and the wire should have been fixed why she could have been electrocuted quite possibly ordinary house current under certain circumstances can be fatal to grown-ups under any circumstances it can kill a little child however for now Cindy is safe if you move the playpen away from electrical connections but what about later when she's outgrown the playpen even if the electric cords are in perfect condition a curious child with a hairpin or a piece of wire can get some pretty shocking results from an uncovered electrical outlet and it's a foolhardy risk to take when there are kid-proof safety plugs on the market well I'll get some tomorrow anything else well let's see where do you keep your medicines all in the medicine cabinet in the bathroom where else Out Of Reach of the baby of course out of the reach of the baby perhaps out of a reach now but let me ask you to imagine what might happen in the case of Cindy's seven-year-old brother an advanced age when every height is a challenge to his ability to climb and every closed door is an invitation to his curiosity a utility cabinet where all household solvents inflammables and rat poisons and all dangerous medicines can be stored and cap locked at all times now this is the only Shore guarantee that young children won't poison themselves with curiosity one utility cabinet hasp and padlock and mother yes anything cooking in the kitchen dinners on the stove all the pot handles turned in I don't know here honey your pride and joy ours foreign the handles were turned out and did you turn it into the stove yes but I sure hated to that was a brand new set of pots won't do it any harm and if it did it's a lot easier to replace a ruined pot than a scalded child Cindy fine father you are why weren't you watching her well I was writing all of this oh that's right matches and lighters Out Of Reach of the infant and the young child for Burns and skulls are the greatest single cause of death in young children well looks like you can never have A Moment's Peace of Mind once you become ah goodness you can't think of everything it's not quite as bad as that is it Dr Dietrich well I admit the problem of accident prevention may seem hopelessly complicated to most parents but it shouldn't this chart May clarify the point if you notice until a year of age the infant needs 100 protection against all accident hazards in the next year because of curiosity there's opportunity for simple but vital education protect him until you can teach him and then remember that a child is best taught by his parents example and by supervised experience and least effectively by preaching although protection is greatly diminished by the age of six it never entirely disappears even for us supposedly educated adults protection still exists in the form of fire ordinances traffic laws Maritime and Aviation codes like manners and morals safety is a form of behavior that is learned in the home no public or private agency can relieve you of the responsibility for teaching your child safe Behavior it's up to you thank you Dr Dietrich your local health department will gladly provide you with literature on safety of the home and a safety checklist by which you can make sure that your home is free from the hazards and pitfalls that make so many homes the most dangerous place in the world to live thank you for letting us join you you may have missed your regular TV program but you also may have saved the life of your child you know Jim I
