Description: Chronicles the efforts of 180 coal-mining families to win a United Mine Workers contract at the Brookside Mine in Harlan County, Kentucky. The strike began in 1974 after the miners voted to join the UMW. The Duke Power Company, parent company of the Brookside Mine, refused to sign a standard UMW contract. This was the first major confrontation in Harlan County since the mine battles of the 1930's. In this struggle, the women of Harlan County took an active and militant stand.
