Description: This adaptation of the Steinbeck novel reflected Hollywood's awakened social consciousness to the plight of Dust Bowl refugees. Having served a four-year prison stint for manslaughter, Tom Joad returns home to find his family being evicted from their Oklahoma farm, the victims of ecological disaster and intransigent bank officials. Taking to the road in an aged jalopy, the Joad clan suffers the misery of exploitative migrant camps as they make their way to California and the hope of a better life. Ford's film is Note worthy for its ensemble acting and for the masterful cinematography of Gregg Toland. In addition, Ford drew on the photographs of Margaret Bourke-White, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein and Ben Shahn to achieve the film's aura of authenticity.Genre/FormFeature films., Concentrates on the Inchoate struggles of the evicted dust bowl victims to produce a leader. Pa Joad, Ma Joad, and Preacher Casey each try to lead, but each has weaknesses. Only the slow simplicity and strength of Tom Joad is adequate to the task. He comes to lead not because of revolutionary rhetoric but through the daily experience of dust, hunger, brutality and exploitation.
