test hey we're watching a Russian film that I got on eBay from the Ukraine which is about our great military enjoy you so I'm having some problems which is why I'm getting start a little bit late with this video capture device it's being a little bit of a pain in the butt so bear with me here that should be right I'm gonna get rid of this loop that you probably are hearing right now one second you alright I'm back so tonight is a let me see if I can make myself appear hi hi everybody hi Dabney kradic's I think I just saw that you guys joined in so I'm waving hello anyways so tonight we're watching films about [Music] things that I've I've pulled which I haven't watched yet things I've gotten an ebay recently variety of different subject matter including some Russian films that I've been really wanting to watch I have been kind of spending too much money on films from the Ukraine educational films from the Ukraine and in the past I had one it was a Russian dental hygiene film that's awesome so I have been looking and buying over a period of time other ones but I just haven't had time to watch them so we're gonna watch some of them tonight I was trying to come up with some way to use my smart phone to actually translate on the fly and maybe if we get more inventive and I don't have as many problems with this this transfer device [Music] will give it a shot what do you think all right we're gonna get started in case you didn't know I am skipped Alzheimer baby eeks 80 geeks we collect old educational films and we show them to folks like you and we have been showing them to folks like you for over 20 years the new thing is that we have been doing it over the Internet for the last two years and it's been a lot of fun technology-wise its nightmarish because it's it's film technology which I don't know if you can see right there is is a tell us it II which I'm going to start rewinding happens all the time all the time so it's up you get to see me do this in real time make mistakes no nothing's caught on fire yet I'm gonna turn down this light a little bit too when I get this anyways this is you know twenty five thousand films and Counting and get new films all the time another thing that's happened is the folks at the Tennessee archive of the moving image and sound are the archive of moving image and sound donated a bunch of films that are going bad they're going to vinegar and they're like hey do you want these before we throw these out and I was like yes so they stink but I want to kind of get a little bit more life out of them before they go away so we're gonna watch some of those tonight which I have not seen so there we go turn on the lights a little a little bit more delicate Harris squeaking noise know what that's from I'm sorry if it's a problem anyways so some of the films are gonna watch tonight definitely a safety pedestrian safety film with hippies maybe a Russian brainwash film maybe a film about soap I don't know that's what it says on the titles but I haven't watched these so I have no idea what we're about to watch and that's kind of the beauty of this this is what I truly enjoy doing is seeing stuff what it is and you get to discover at the same time we're in transition as we go backwards so I can set up the next film and not look at my face so this is we're running film backwards it's a nice Russian guy talking about how great the military is I think the film is probably from the late sixties early seventies it'shat black and white for budget concerns and it's kind of stretch unfortunately that makes me sad I love when films are not scratched but nature if it means that somebody shared this a bunch or didn't know how to show it so Russians were even less knowledgeable about how to run projectors as America [Music] like I said I I don't know what the name of that film was or I didn't say this but I did not really have a sense of what that that film title was that was just why I can show you title I need some of you can but it is in Russian and can't read Cyrillic this ex-home purports to be in English and is very stinky but we are gonna run with it that's what we do if you're commenting on what I'm saying I can't read it because it's on another computer I'm afraid that I'm gonna text this computer too much so I run it on a different which I read when I run the film so I will comment in a second all right so this is soap you so Carl sets the solution aside to cool while he adjusts the balance to weigh out the fat needed he uses about seven times as much fat as he does sodium hydroxide this is clean waste kitchen fat that Carl collected at home it should make good soap the fat must be warned before mixing the sodium hydroxide with it a mixing temperature of about 100 degrees Fahrenheit gives good results the flame quickly warms the fat then Carl begins to add the sodium hydroxide it is the reaction between sodium hydroxide and fat form soap what is the nature of this reaction let's consider this a molecule of fat consisting of a glycerin part and an acid part and let's consider these molecules of lye consisting of sodium parts and hydroxide parts now when these molecules interact the sodium parts of the lye molecules go with the acid part of the fat molecule parts of the lye molecules go with the glycerin part of the fat molecule this reaction results in three molecules of soap and one molecule of glycerin fat plus ly gives soap plus glycerin this process is called saponification saponification is what occurs when fat and lye react in commercial soap making the glycerin is usually removed in about 10 minutes or as soon as the mixture of sodium hydroxide and fat has a honey like texture it is ready to pour into a mold this mixture should spend several days more before it is used so that all of the fat and lye will react to form soap and glycerin carl's soap has been standing for more than a week and he thinks it is ready to use it has a fine texture and should have good cleansing qualities but before Karl tries out his soap to see how well it will remove dirt let's take a close look at hands we say are dirty in a closed view the skin would look something like this notice the oil film on the skin and the dirt particles suspended in it you all right so this is not the best film and I see that the capture device crapped out tonight he's not a very good technology night for me and I apologize for that I'm not quite sure what's going on here yeah so a couple of things we're going around here and you know this is av geek so you get to find out all the annoying stuff one the film itself was very shrunk so what's happening is that the the acetate is beginning to shrink and image was rolling because the sprockets weren't meshing basically what happens is the film gets really shrunk and it begins to twist and you see it right there because it twists and it has a really bad vinegar smell and the the perfs are not fitting on the little sprocket at wheels that move film through a register where the frames are so it's beginning to roll and also it was so shrunk that the sound head was not focused on the frame anymore so it was the volume was very low then the technology the new technology a relatively new technology crapped out so we're talking a hundred years of failure technology failures so it happens so this is a great machine it's a workhorse but for situations like that I have other machines that I use to scan this so before this goes away which it will eventually dice and we scan it on a another scanner which can actually read the purples and doesn't use sprockets to do it so there you go so I haven't had a chance to look at your comment so you're probably all saying things like the sounds not on yeah sorry the way things are laid out it's all the comments or another room so this one's called pests or plenty plenty I was happy to see the other day another foam collector did a little impromptu screening he used make a cell phone and just broadcast live on Facebook well as he was watching films so I'm happy to see it's happening maybe I just have to fall back to that because this you know as technology gets harder and harder and then it's like well maybe I just need to take all the cables out of the loop and just kind of roll it so this is pests or plenty I don't think this is as bad as the last one but we hopefully will see all right enjoy you [Music] throughout America today our agricultural land is truly a garden orchards lush with fruit fields and farmlands rich with the goodness of things to eat a legacy for us to treasure to build on [Music] and we have built on it we've made more progress in the last three quarters of a century than did worldwide agriculture in its previous seven thousand years imagine it's all happened within a single lifetime and just look at it enough to make your mouth water isn't it food us a horn of plenty [Music] the wonderful world of food food coming to us from all parts of the country to our very backyard wholesome food quality food food at reasonable prices and food in quantity yes lots of it the advances of technology in agriculture have been so effective that now we can mass-produce crops to feed our expanding populations [Music] and in this dynamic age of hours no longer are the things we eat limited by season or by geography [Music] [Music] no it hardly matters where we are our tables are well bestowed with the products of a big wide country American agriculture is many things it is the fields of corn with their deep soils agriculture is to sun-drenched valleys of the salad bowl but no matter where it may be each field is different every farm and farmer every orchard all different [Music] all producing something else in their own distinctive way still we've been able to cope with the many profiles of our land we've invented new practices new techniques new devices [Music] we have the latest in harvesting equipment [Music] we work with up-to-date packaging methods the modern farmer and his bounty his Garden of Eden ah but is it no there's trouble in paradise trouble in many forms a beautiful blossom innocent but really a deadly weed a strangler a killer well named which weed and it is but one of six hundred or so weeds competing with our growing crops then there's the nematode visible only under the scrutiny of a microscope [Music] it pierces the roots of our food plants and such their juices potatoes strawberries many of the things we like to eat so much no use squeezing these melons nematodes have beat us to it [Music] considered blight in one year this lethal fungus destroyed nearly half of our tomato crops along the Atlantic seaboard but it is just one of at least 1500 plant diseases that worry our agriculture take this hungry pest this snail with no shell the slug destructive feeder of our leafy green vegetables and consider insects they are without question the most troublesome of our public enemies the costliest several hundred kinds with their voracious appetites are especially destructive [Music] yes these are our competitors who can compute their number a number with skyrockets with every breath we take [Music] and if we allow them to get out of control an infestation can turn into a play [Music] man has always been so hounded by his natural enemies but science has come through with important weapons the development of plants that fight pests better methods of growing crops pest killers like insecticides and herbicides the use of chemicals dates back to the ancient days of brimstone and common salt but today of course our controls are more sophisticated and they are under strict federal surveillance for instance all pesticides must be registered with the United States Department of Agriculture this is required by law the data which a pesticide manufacturer submits are carefully evaluated by specialists will the pesticide do the job is it safe for the user when directions are faithfully follow what about crop residue here's where the Food and Drug Administration enters the scene residues are allowed only in specified amounts safe ones this is called legal tolerance in establishing legal tolerance the administration uses at least a 100 fold factor of safety 100 fold when a pesticide is found to be safe as well as useful a residue tolerance is set and labeling is accepted for registration full directions for the consumer must be spelled out on the label if a warning is necessary it must be conspicuous the health of one and all is of utmost consideration when it is followed to the letter the label protects everyone's health the fast-moving development of the modern pesticide since the middle 40s is one reason why American agriculture has been able to make such spectacular advances [Music] let's go back to weeds for a minute when crops are in competition with weeds quality suffers yields are considerably reduced that's where the herbicide comes in without the chemical weedkiller some of our favorite items might easily be priced right out of the food market thus we are constantly trying to tip the scales in our favor and chemicals are not our only weapon we have predatory insects scientists of the Department of Agriculture continue to search the world for such predators friendly insects which instinctively prey upon harmful ones those that do damage to our crops and our livestock now here is a case of natural love and agriculture scientists have taken advantage of it the screwworm fly parasite of livestock the female we discovered mates only once in her life so we proceeded to raise flies sterilize them and release them over a fly infested area since each mating is ineffectual the population of screwworm flies spirals down to zero a unique achievement in man's effort to live with nature researchers in agriculture continue to explore and develop new techniques for keeping other pests in check such as those that eventually grow resistant to insecticides we are seeking ways to break down this barrier of immunity through new chemicals or by unlocking others secrets of nature and so research is always at work at work to protect our food our Plenty our people [Music] at work to keep our abundance from slipping through our fingers [Music] to keep it flowing in quantity from farm to consumer and still remain the bargain that it is nowadays we pay out less of our work add a dollar for food than we ever have before that dollar buys us selection advises quality built in maid service convenience and it buys us safety and assurance for our dinner table American agriculture is a world leader Food USA good plentiful and safe [Music] yeah that kind of worked free I love it when technology works doesn't happen all the time but I'm gonna blame HDMI cable that's what I'm gonna blame I'm gonna blame I had this one HDMI cable that I wasn't very happy with it was too long he wasn't sending a signal and then I used this one which I think I used last time but it's very precariously stretched across I would show you but I would probably knock it out so I'm just gonna have to buy a longer HDMI cable there you go so yes you u-s-d-a Department of Agriculture had to lock up film motion picture unit so there was a lot of films that they made a lot of films I have other ones in this made by them one of my favorite is among your souvenirs which is basically about if your souvenirs we're coming in and going through customs you know how they could carry parasites and bugs and different things that will wreak havoc with our ecosystem in our agricultural systems so it shows them burning a lot of little corne dolls and different things and showing all these little mites and parasites it's pretty great all right so what you said you wanted to watch another Russian film oh you're in luck this is part two or three of first films out of the show as a problem I showed at the beginning which again is something about the military and how great it is but what's beautiful about it is there's this the if you don't speak Russian there's this wonderful authoritative authoritarian narration and beautiful stop shots of Russian military stuff maybe this one's in better shape there's some kind of at the beginning which see if I can transition over so you can kind of look at this this is maybe this is a leader lad oh it's like from a cartoon or something like this is the beginning of this film it's not really kind of before the countdown leader you know what that is guy or woman looking in a closet it's a illustration or a cartoon or something oh it is it's animated and then alright so this is part two or three years ND part one what I showed before was part two this is that Russian film enjoy kappa dance Logan hospital no Gasol that at least ability skipper get off him yaha Shiraz kazhagam Roberta Tom Chuck Norris avoid Nia Varma Puritans Lord cheeky commando [Music] and just like that it is wow that was exciting that looks pretty exciting if I do say so myself there's a lot of images of training some crazy gymnastics calisthenics pretty great all right so next film I'm gonna watch rock and roll Safety Patrol and see it rock and roll safety patrol this is a purchase looks beep creating pretty great not so great so here decided safety films from 70s especially one involving I think this involves hippies so excited to see that it was just like when hippies somehow showed up on The Beverly Hillbillies and Jethro became a hippie it was just hilarious you know it was really this new pop culture trying to respond to what counterculture is is drumming up and being utterly confused by it and it's just it's very funny I'm service infuriating but by the time it made it to Beverly Hillbillies it was probably already done properly already the real hippies were so sick of it it's just like when the Pillsbury Doughboy started rapping it was like you know what that style of rap is done feels very double is on a skateboard and he's rapping I do not have that on film that would be great but that was probably the video thing I'm sure if you look on the internet on the web's YouTube but yeah so everybody thanks for coming out if you don't know who I am I'm Skippy Alzheimer I collect old educational films and show them to folks like you I do live screenings mostly in Raleigh North Carolina and a lot of them at the Alamo Drafthouse which is a new theater that just opened up I'll be doing something on Thursday called AV geeks get ripped off which is a lot of fun and then it's basically showing Father's Day films or films about fathers as comedians watch and comment live on them it's not something I normally do I don't really like to let up don't run and then we you know make quips about it afterwards but this is for people that can't stand the old e mold ease that I show and they need a little bit of augmentation or I've always wanted just to talk back but it just don't seem to be clever enough so we have hired comedians to do that so that's at the Alamo Drafthouse I also do shows at Kings the Science Museum hunt library and then other places across the u.s. so what's great about doing these live streaming's is that we get to actually share it with hundreds of people across the world live and that's actually kind of fun because we're at the archive I may or may not be wearing pants knows and I'm watching films pull them directly off the shelf and showing them and we have different themes and tonight's theme is films I haven't seen ok I get a bunch of films I think I just got like 40 films last week and we've been through them digitizing them these four films that some of them were pretty beat up or have serious shrunken vinegar problems so we're gonna digitize them and have hopefully a able to give them a life before they have to be thrown away because they're unpredictable and you might wonder why am I sitting on so far on this side of the screen and it's because there is a device like right here that if I touch it it will stop streaming because of the cable issue so anyways so this next film is RocknRolla Safety Patrol enjoy [Music] rock n roll with the city Patrol obey the rules when you leave school rock n roll with the Safety Patrol you Jared keep your cool [Music] hey Rollo will you dig that sure Rocky yeah you got a shovel Tommy I don't mean that kind of dig I mean look over there yeah Rock that's called the safety patrol they do good you call that good roll oh that is bad man bad yeah dad that is really bad sure it saves their lives but look what they lose freedom right they lose freedom yeah you see what that safety patrol kid is doing he is like telling them what to do and he is like making those boys and girls cross when he says that is taking away their freedom but Rock if they don't follow the safety patrol rules they could get like [Music] no way man drivers always stop for kids but the boats they don't steal don't confuse me that but we've got to do is help those boys and girls to be free man free right man free easy we'll talk to them we'll tell them to forget the safety patrol we can't do that Rock kids are too smart oh yeah if I can get just one to do it our way the others will follow well I don't think we can get even one wanna bet come on I'll show you let's split flip go King Rock not like that dummy I mean let's blow [Music] there's what I've been looking for you've been looking for a curb no dummy look over there [Music] and she's got to cross the street what would you do I'd go down to the corner where there's a safety patrol no damn me you can cross where you want to cross in the middle of the block yeah in the middle of the block that how could we get her to do that look soon find out [Music] [Applause] cross the street here Mary you don't want to walk all the way to the corner come on Mary it's when is safe [Music] [Applause] she's gonna win rocks she can't do that come on Rolo are you hurt no I'm not hurt I'm Rolo no dummy I mean forget it let's go find somebody else to help okay rock but let's find a double this time one who doesn't believe in safety rules Rock are you there yeah Rolo but look over there at those two boys [Music] [Music] watch this I bet I can get that one boys listen to me hey you Billy you're bigger than that safety patrol walk right pastor be free man free hey kid what's your friend and run [Music] tell him that dummy you want him to start thinking thank you well look at those boys they know they should be horsing around even if they don't hurt themselves they could bump one of the other kids into this tree [Music] yeah what kind of an example is bad now everybody loaf a the safety patrol know your trouble Rollo you've got a lot of stupidity oh gee thanks Rach oh forget it say Rach I don't think we're gonna find even one boy or girl who do what we think there's gotta be a place where somebody listen to us come on [Music] there's what we've been looking for the safety patrol working with a police officer we can get that officer to leave the safety patrol will be on his own he knows rule you're talking is making me sick you want me to sing now go down there and get that officer to leave I'll take care of the rest okay Rock yeah got to think of everything Rolo use your head right on Hey look man the policeman is gone now is your chance to show who's the boss walk right out there in the middle of the street [Music] [Applause] [Music] come on be a big man you know what happened to rock didn't he want to be free ah these smart kids I gave him some great advice and he wouldn't listen why don't we give up rock yeah oh no we've just got to find that one boy or girl say how'd you make that big noise you told me I did ever take more than three steps out into the street and stay one step back when you were on the curb are there any questions a class for new safety patrol members Wow bet we can talk them all into quitting and with no safety patrol you know what'll happen everybody will be free to do anything they want boy you sure think funny [Music] listen to me all of you you know what you'll have to do if your safety patrol members you'll have to be responsible for the safety of a lot of boys and girls and some of them might give you a bad turn [Music] [Music] you can't have a safety patrol on every corner so what good does it do for you to work near school if a couple of blocks away there isn't any patrol but Rock the patrol supervisor knows the problem crossing [Music] some corners have walk and don't walk signal that means the kids don't even have to pay attention to you yes they do rock the safety patrol works with the signal sometimes parrots don't think and they'll do dumb things like stopping right in front of you [Music] and you never take more than three steps out because sometimes drivers are very inconsiderate [Music] sometimes members of the Safety Patrol are given the special award by the school community [Music] most boys and girls like the safety patrol and obey the rules yeah I thought you said not to tell a bath right don't tell them I did oh we blew it again [Music] somewhere out there our boys and girls who don't believe that safety rules are for their own good I just know at least one of them would listen to us if we got rid of the Safety Patrol yeah but how can we do that I'll make it rain then the safety patrol will go home and the kids can forget the rules I don't think come on let's bug out [Music] I might have known if wouldn't work the safety patrol is even on the job in the rain no wonder everybody likes ride Rollo Rollo where are you Rollo you over here rock I like the rock sure is [Applause] you that was outrageous I really unbelievable I am really quite quite pleased with that film that was so weird and so wrong I mean but the premise is just glorious holy cow oh my god so great the the premise beam that there's these two magical hippies of which one is very stupid and you know it's kind of a bison man situation and one of them feel bad that children don't have freedom because it's a safety patrol good well that was I can't remember how much I pay for I don't think it was a lot though I don't think anybody so Higgins Albert Higgins productions they did a lot of triple AAA films educational forms in the 70s I feel like they did the day the bicycles disappeared they did the talking car both versions there's a 50-person and there's a 60 person and then in the late 70s and 80s they started doing this these two characters which were very similar to these hippies and I want to say was it was Harv and Marv and they learned all these different things about hygiene and manners and it was the same type of thing where you had these two characters animated character was commenting a live stuff that they're watching and it was horrible I mean the animation was really bad in Harvey and Marv were just I don't know if they were hobos or just kind of I can't remember their deal but I watched a couple of their films and I was like man these are horrible so I have several in my collection and I just I don't think I've watched all of them because they just really that great on me pretty bad and that means a lot I mean I have a pretty high tolerance in educational films on that one that series with those characters just well but but you know if you made them hippy since they're hobos and you know you have them trying to get kids to get killed in traffic pedestrian situations then that ups the ante this film doesn't have any leader on it and and it's written on it a four-letter word so I don't know what this is but I'm excited to see what it is it was kind of in a stack of films and I didn't know what they were and that happened sometimes we get films in and they get moved around and they get this located and I'm looking at what film is about leader so the beginning has been has been sniped on this one we don't really have any information and it might not even be that time me something else so here we go find out so till I know otherwise I'm gonna call it a whole letter word because that's what it says on the campout but there's a title right there it's this four-letter word if you can see back there we're letter word all right I hope you guys are enjoying this as much I as I have all right I am as this is a way for us to go through our collection and we get to see films for the first time I have a feeling that rock and roll safety patrol will probably show up on a riff tracks or a Mystery Science Theater at some point just because I know it seems to be up their alley so you guys got to see it first all right enjoy my name is bill Schallert and I'm speaking to you from a different angle now you'd be absolutely right if you slanted and I know you'll be uncomfortable if you have to watch this picture much longer leaning to one side so straighten me out would thank you this picture is about bias a slant or leaning and the way we think the man's world well for the feedback got all the things I grew up with have dropped out I think a woman's place is in the home I think they're ideal and Playboy magazine I like to do things in my own way and if you have a woman in the organization then you've got to explain everything to them and draw a picture for them I don't know crazy you know what I mean you know they they feel that it's just beating their head against against the wall well a man understands you don't have to explain it to him you tell him and he knows right away but a woman just doesn't doesn't function that way that's it that's the way the establishment people are really something aren't they they're all different and they all have their own ideas and speaking by self it all seems pretty familiar how about you anyone here reminds you of someone you know could be I guess if you talked to a psychologist he might tell speaking of bias she or he might tell you that the way these people feel about everybody else has a lot to do with the way they feel about themselves how do you feel about yourself how do you see yourself are you a girl a boy man woman young old you've seen your own photographs and you see yourself in the mirror but I mean something more than that how do you see yourself as a person the entire you what's called your self-image and how do you feel about that self-image because that's what color's your attitudes toward everyone and everything it makes you express your feelings in your own special way everybody wants to be a winner why not look what you get status recipes approval maybe money and self-esteem everyone loves a winner including the winner and with everything else you get a winner has a chance of becoming famous [Applause] on the other people laugh at failure and we hate being ridiculed failure to most of us mean not quite smart enough we fear failure and so we're not educated in how to fail and that's too bad because we all fail sometimes instead of accepting our failures and viewing them as a learning process toward success our bias against any failure can make us risk everything [Applause] what are your ideas about yourself and other people come from the self-image I mentioned before doesn't happen just like that it develops as we grow up and it keeps changing all through our lives when we're children for instance things happen to us that shape our attitudes and the way we feel about ourselves and everyone around us I never cried in my life I was a man I faced dr. thing when our friends come over I don't want you hanging around some day you get married and your husband will take care of all those things mechanical engineering are you kidding so bias and Prejudice begin before we're able to think for ourselves and in one way or another whether we like it or not we're all prejudiced conventions can be lonely for a man away from home land is about to have an experience like so many others in his life and taking a break at the same affair is immediately receptive tool and self introduction ordinarily she'd be more guarded but she's lonely too but after all quick acquaintances aren't unusual at conventions and in Lynne find they know many of the same people share similar ideas and have strong enthusiasm to the organization that's brought them to this gathering aside from all this and is exceptionally attractive and for len unattached a prospect that might blossom into something more than the temporary relationship he suggests they go to a nearby restaurant for lunch who says men have to be taller than women why should it matter why does it make a difference who's taller is it bias or what now I know it's hard to believe but most of us are biased against ourselves for instance there are always other people who we think they're more attractive than we are and they have a better chance at everything anyway we learn very early that the attractive people are given the breaks a lot more often than the plain ones and it's a sad fact of life that they're not so beautiful who may be more knowledgeable or gifted have to try harder the pretty ones just breezed through on their looks and personality the Constitution says that all men are created equal but if you happen to be part of a minority or if you're short or if you're unattractive so equal do you feel but what's pretty what's ugly who made this decision for us who perpetuates it and why and at this hour of the morning you can spark up that old appetite with a delicious bowl full of crisps that be a more alluring you with the fragrance of a suit tonight at the first touch she will know there is something more [Music] the enough money to do the kitchen over now you can consolidate all your monthly payments into one convenient easy to pay loan why deprive yourself of something you can have now prejudices are built right into our society every day mass media tell us how we should feel what we should think what we should do what we should be we don't even know what's happening to us but we're influenced by all this input and it affects our relationships with everybody else a better life do you have preconceptions about people you don't know do you make snap judgments do you love some faces and hate others or maybe do you feel you can talk to somebody for a couple of minutes and just know somehow whether you like them or not if you do all these things you don't have to feel guilty you're like almost everybody else what you're doing is thinking in stereotype you're forming an opinion that has no basis in fact stereotypes reinforce the opinions we already have and they're hard to get rid of okay that's one way of looking at these people now here's the same group of people with a different set of labels if you can't imagine some of these people having these qualities we're proving our point you're thinking in stereotype let's face it you're condemning these people to the first set of labels from their photographs of course stereotyping can be more than just the quick judgments of things people stereotype way that some men think of women through affects the quality of their lives to them women can never be considered equal and so they're tolerated women don't really have a I don't think a grasp of princes the business world and the way things are done I know I personally would never really feel confident that personal women are emotional and if you have major decisions to make you don't want that emotional element in it that guy's not kidding he really believes that belonging but women who are the victims of this kind of character can learn to cope retaliate or maybe even change some attitudes it's burned like anything well I guess it got a little over quick oh here take mine it's not quite no I don't want you here said I don't want mine I don't like burning foods and I'm sick and tired of this whole business I haven't had a good meal since he went back to school you know I worked Honnold when I come home I'm hungry and tired and I I don the title to some decent cooking Oh big this doors going I can't go to school come home and be a gourmet truck I'm not asking for a gourmet cook just the cook you know I ate better than just when I look to the rule by myself honey I don't ask for much but everything is going to pieces I mean you don't lie on my shirts I couldn't apply to clean pair of socks this morning nothing is getting done nothing is getting done since you went back to school but I gotta tell you this as long as you're my wife I come first I'm not blaming you let's face it women are not cut out they handle two jobs at one do you never should have start this whole business it's ridiculous no well we got married I'm the husband you're the wife how'd you like to have sue Gardner's problems she wants to grow and make something of herself but her husband doesn't want any change he's got a picture of how he wants his wife to be and his wife isn't conforming do you think they can resolve their differences intelligently ever since Pete can remember he wanted to be a printer in grade school he was in charge of the school paper and this is his first job in a professional print shop mr. Lawson Pete's boss doesn't know how hard Pete's trying now if it were true that wisdom always comes with age mr. Lawson wouldn't have the troubles he has seems like life gets harder and harder as he gets older this what have you seen work like this we're not running an underground newspaper here what are you getting so excited for that looks great that's great what I do it good experience I've been in the printing business for 40 years ago you're gonna tell me what's great oh I know what your kids can produce your awkward gets garbage your whole generation is garbage lady that's what you are the whole bunch of your facts no of talent all you're looking for is my hand up why when I was your age your bite of putting something like this I would have been fired I think it looks good like this I think it's got blast and I think it looks better in three you think you say nothing you don't tell me how to run my visit if I tell you to run it in black you run it in black I'm not taking it right from you oh come on get off my back that line get them work anymore we'll plenty to look around see what's happened in the world huh you've been locked up in this place too long you're all dried up seeds of change Oh things have changed all right for laude for cheap and fluffy look at the way you dress and your new things and that keep you've got downstairs you call that a car but that's your idea of a change we're in for trouble oh I can just imagine what this country would be like with folks like you running it come on old man you were stealing you belong in a king I can get a monkey for half of what I thank you get your second to get out you're fired okay so mr. Lawson doesn't like Pete's work and maybe he has good reason but he's unyielding he won't accept change sure it's hard to change when you're older but not impossible mr. Lawson was forced into a hasty decision both because of his bias against you and because of Pete's unfortunate choice of words he could have avoided being fired but he's as bad as his boss he can't cope with people who were conservative inflexible or old sue Gardner on the other hand has a relationship with her husband that isn't so easily broken you know what I think Robert you resent me I am NOT a servant my education happens to be very important to me I want to be more than a housewife look please don't try and fit me into your little picture of what you think I should be like because I'm not like that I have got to be myself I mean all right maybe I am trying to do too much but if we could just sit down and talk about things need to be changed around here now I make a list if we share some of the responsibilities maybe things would get better think about it what am I supposed to do I'm working all day what have I got time all right maybe I could do some of the shopping before I come home how about that okay by keeping to the real issues by being objective rather than emotional sue turned her husband's biased views into constructive discussion Robert just might change his irrationally by virtue of his wife's honest expression of her feelings how does Pete handle his predicament one says thinking job anyway I hate that old man he's got something wrong to say about every kid I know why he hired me because he couldn't find anyone who would work for the chief Oh why should I make money him I'm gonna be fired it's gonna be for something good [Applause] people trapped by mr. Lawson's problems I suppose he had a right to be angry with the old man but he and mr. Lawson both lost out and Pete's frustration and anger exploded into a pointless act of destruction people talk about a generation gap and there may or may not be one it just depends on who you're talking to hi do you mind if I ask you a few questions maybe what I want to know is if I were to ask you your opinion of older people what would be the first thing that comes to your mind well older people are always telling us you know what to do but look how they're always messing things up are you going to vote this here I'll be able to vote this year but I probably watch I don't think although politicians don't know anything about our problems yeah you say the same thing anyway everybody asks us to do things but nobody really cares well really they think our generation is awful but I bet they weren't any different talk about it I don't think either side is gonna change older people are just gonna have to be tolerated the truth is when you get old nobody cares anymore you slow down and the world has no time to wait for you even your own children have no time you find your only comfortable with people like yourself who have the same problems you have to try to keep busy cards checkers chess whatever from young people you get nothing isn't it they hate us but it's it's it's always been the same we're burdens on them they don't want to carry they don't know that they'll snap their fingers and tomorrow they'll be like we are everybody figure some day we'll be old but that that's that's a long time from now they don't realize how fast it all happens the practicing of discrimination there's a lot more damaging than prejudice because it takes the idea of prejudice and transforms it into action action that deprives many people of jobs housing and education opportunities for minorities are still limited they're given less skill lower paying jobs because they had been denied equal educational facilities and the bias still carries over closing many doors to management and policymaking positions women are excluded from many occupations and there's widespread discrimination against the old the poor and the handicapped if it's bad to discriminate against certain people or ideas why do we take so long to get rid of it lots of reasons our biases make us resist anything that threatens to change our lives we may be afraid of losing our job men are afraid of losing their masculine domination older people fear the drastic change represented by the dress music and mores of young people they feel threatened the young are intolerant of their parents and older people's clinging to the past they resent Authority they want to establish their own lifestyle the short and tall feel uncomfortable with each other people who think they're unattractive are afraid of rejection and reflecting these fears and biases and what we've come to accept as human characteristics many advertisers find a receptive soft spot in presenting their messages while we can't always get rid of prejudice there are ways to fight discrimination we should learn to recognize it and speak out against it it takes time and energy but people can change unfair laws and practices we can pressure our lawmakers but we begin by taking a good look at ourselves we're all prejudiced even ab ideas do you have about yourself are you what you want to be [Applause] or are you locked into somebody else's picture of what you should be are you prepared to examine the way you think and feel do you personally know people of different ethnic groups are you comfortable with those who are opposite or different are you prepared to make some changes I really think as far as biases concerned love consideration really the answer I wish it were that simple but the problem of bias has many sides and a lot of faces you got a mirror take a look [Applause] have you got any problems she's a stupid blonde he's real cute but he's short he's awfully good but he's an old guy this is job for a woman how old are you anyway me bias Oh nice that woman was pretty great I'm gonna pull it through so I can kind of see the see maybe says public schools I never made this film have no idea that's great big fan William shallot of course TVs dad shows up in a lot of films he's dad and did we see who actually did this film no idea Jack and Ron's Lieberman somebody pointed out that is patty Dukes dad yes all right so what time is it 937 all right so this is where I get let you guys vote we have a choice let me find you and I want you to write in the comments and when I'm done talking I'm gonna go count comments and see which wins so we have choice one is a film that I've been wanting to watch for quite a while which is called your brain is the target it's a long Russian film and so you know Russian film your brain is the target it's in Russian and it's about propaganda so I have an American film about American propaganda film about Russia propaganda so this is a Russian propaganda film hopefully about American probably good so I have no idea haven't watched it it had been rewound incorrectly on the reel so I had to fix it today so I haven't had a chance to watch it and I've had it for a couple months I really want to see so there's your brain is the target completely in Russian although there might be some English a shorter film called the big business big business and I think this one is another shape that's pretty good I don't know we'll see so all right you got a choice two choices Detroit so it is the Russian film propaganda film which is probably close to 45 minutes in length it's all in Russian it's called your brain is the target or this English film called big business so I want you to mark in the comments now and and while you do that what I'm gonna do is and I'll have to tally both on YouTube and on the internet archive's I'm sorry YouTube and Facebook my brain and tally which which wins so right here if you liked what you saw tonight and you want to encourage this behavior patreon.com wwwp tree on Comm slash any geeks that's a great place to donate to the cause it's kind of like a subscription tip jar you can donate a little bit over a period of time and that money goes towards buying films on ebay goes towards upgrading equipment it's gonna go towards buying a longer HDMI cable that won't place me in some sort of weird predicament here where I'm kind of balanced not trying that to touch it and stuff like that I very much appreciate showing films like this to folks like you other ways you can support ava geeks is you can go to our website and buy stuff our website was recently hacked thanks to Bluehost fault I think Bluehost hosts our site and I really am getting sicker and sicker of them and it's basically because WordPress is becoming such a target so this gave me an opportunity to go in and upgrade stuff so if you go to wav geeks calm it should come up okay it might still bring up the hack stuff I'm trying to clean all that out but I give me a chance to go through and read format stuff and slowly trying to come up with a new way to sell DVDs versus pain somebody else to do it so anyways that's a that's way to do it or you can go to youtube and watch other films we have advertising on there that makes us a little bit of change that again buys more stuff for us to show you okay so I'm gonna go I feel bad with kind of dark air here what should I do alright I'm gonna let you think about this cover as I can't even see it can't even see it I don't think this is gonna work oh my I don't way to position this is a tape somebody gave me I'm super excited to watch it and then it was I realize it was somebody there was a blank tape a little Britain see someone which is OK in its own right but maybe oh yeah somebody donated a bunch of tapes to me and then I donated them to put festival guys so here's a parent's guide for stranger danger featuring two noted celebrities sin Cindy Williams and dr. Laura Schlessinger so watch that okay all right somebody said that this the brain is a target youtube thing is it's actually on YouTube with subtitles but I'm gonna watch it anyways because you guys want to watch it so we're gonna watch it all right off it's so heavy it's uh has to be threaded that's right all right this is exciting all right brain is the target Russian [Music] but the cinemas already was a very political business process to be able to watch pretty cars the business - they're very much devastated over over as I should as if you as I believe for the present it's an electronic device no larger than a calculator that pretty good thing so I don't think it hasn't made a many bushes your son montuno out of an over-dependence of I'm a city like a second - together attempt the Highborne though they're called Eric way maybe nice blossom one have a poem quick news [Music] in the process of developing fighters are about the real definitive of keeping fedoras macabre confer an arrow attack even to his bro [Music] [Music] we can come down restrain immobilized homogeneous part where I was a rotten friend journalist anyone even a very - ribbit - Geum police the news not appear to assume or presume relax Jane share congressman at that physical repulsion Dinh Diem is pizza with atrocities near the democracy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] resonation Nasiriyah motivated Esprit created this material totally adorable just Augustine but they keep replicating aerobics maryska dermatome that may reduce the autumn purchase we've introduced neuro the interior is interference for this period furniture is let me finish the city from Nineveh between second America decrees is the evil in inner of state to do business suit least radical Europe grand you owe me Marci [Music] [Music] [Applause] Renuka Renuka the goddess the display love very small element of a lineage unicorn in she hid our iguana miracle not phony and a boon Roger Roger Revelle obstacle annuity cut-rate the Kaveri such a maneuver Malaysia attorneys turn Advocaat possibly Draghi from Europe [Applause] Heather nice immunity nice malodors per minute forgive me practice with the question Uzi producer [Applause] look at this doctor she wouldn't Lebedev elusive sir give more to give more deeper Oh [Music] Absalom our scenario the three positive let's tie nameless idiom published the hidden data registers of late Maloney do much it was prepared to tuck the nose Nguyen the pollination for me a Brazilian is such a miracle informati people who gravity the authorities vs negative it's [ __ ] artery mascota to choose mot instant photography to the logic of area ratio so many people here when mrs. tonight was a awesome night I appreciate you guys staying up late I also appreciate you letting me indulge me and watch this film man that was that was something else you know obviously propaganda but you know I knew what buttons to push I knew what to what egregious American things in the 50s 60s 70s 80s to to highlight by 1985 was one that came out me and that was something else thank you for indulging me like I said that was quite the spectacle and again you know about that in the Ukraine and just have not had a time to watch it so I appreciate you guys along and watching tonight's screening I have not had a chance to look at a calendar for when we're gonna do the next one of these in July but we will do it a Sunday keep an eye on Facebook or YouTube or the a/v geeks comm site thanks again for tuning in and telling your friends about what we do at AV eeks normally we're not this political but we took a pretty hard line against hippies tonight and against Western capitalism and idealism and we did see some awesome pest footage which was great again if you liked what you saw I'd like you to contribute you can actually go to patreon.com/scishow be geeks and donate that money goes towards buying equipment it's gonna buy a long HDMI cable so that I'm not so bound by cables here and have more decent signal we've been using new technology that we purchased thanks to patreon so hopefully the image has gotten a little bit better the lip sync is hasn't become a problem but again I collect films and show them but it really makes me happy to see other people watching them commenting on them so thanks again for tuning in and I will see you again at some other point so if you're in the area there's some AV geek shows coming up at the Alamo Kings and the Alamo again in the next couple of weeks so go to AV geeks calm and learn more about that but we'll see you soon stay cool it's already gotten gross in Raleigh and so keep cool and we will tug again take care bye
