Father Charles "Chuck" O'Malley arrives in New York City with an unconventional style that will transform the parish life of St. Dominic’s Church. O’Malley and the elder pastor, Father Fitzgibbon, are put off by O‘Malley's recreational habits and his friendship with the even more casual Father Timmy O'Dowd. The most consequential difference of opinion arises in their handling of the youth of the church, many of whom are consistently getting into trouble with the law.
