Recounts the difficult choice Sandy Furnival, a recently demobbed serviceman, has to make between an unexpected job offer in Turnbulls, one of Sheffield's largest steelworks, and resuming his pre-war position as his father's right-hand man in their small cutlery firm, Furnival and Son. The various aspects of Sheffield's steel industry are showcased, from the large-scale factories where cutlery is mass produced to the older ones, like Furnival and Son, where quality craftsmanship has been handed down from father to son for generations.
