fingertips there you are dougie you know for a long time emily and i didn't think we could swing a house we were afraid we couldn't afford it and uh also we were trying to find a location close enough to my work and we were afraid too that uh we wouldn't get a house that was substantial you know a real good investor oh there are so many things you have to be sure of you see that young couple over there jim and sally miller all their swell folks they've been looking for a house now for about a year and i certainly hope they don't give up trying because believe me it's worth all the effort you put into it you're not ready to leave yet are you look what's your rush why don't you stick around oh we'd love to but we're going to be at mother's at six and jim and i were going to see a sample home over on west drive well then you'll have to come right by here on the way back why don't you let bobby stay with us good idea i think bobby's head is full of house honey anyway i don't know it around here you know and i expect an engraved invitation when you move into your new home what makes you think we'll ever have a new one oh wasn't that a nice party oh it sure was it was a wonderful party so happy for them you know the old saying there's no place like home well the fact is more and more people are starting to say there's no place like a waverly hills home why not see for yourself you they've followed plenty of leads that led nowhere since the day they started looking for a house it was about four months ago in the morning funny thing about wanting a house how it hits some young couples all of a sudden they'll be going along just fine like jim and sally miller have a youngster maybe or one on the way apartments a little cramped but they're used to it they know everybody on the floor the neighborhood's home to the way they look at it a house is something you buy someday when your ship comes in then one morning you get up maybe you open your closet door and a hat box smacks you in the face maybe betsy robertson from apartment 5b comes running in to tell you they bought a house well that's a surprise you know the robertsons quite well never thought they were ready for a house any more than you suddenly both start talking at once after all if the robertsons can afford a house you rush to the real estate ads impulsive is all get out it looks so simple a month two months you'll be in your own home well the first house was nice but there wasn't enough closet space anyway you're not crazy about the style you see another house it's out of your price range you're still enthusiastic but you're beginning to realize you can't go out and buy a house overnight it's going to take time and thought when you get down to it buying a house is one of the really major decisions of your life you don't want to make a mistake and so the hunt continues for the millers it meant days of following up ads talking to builders visiting sample homes by the time they had looked for three months they had a pretty good idea what they wanted and a pretty good idea too what they didn't want they wanted a substantial house a good investment and they didn't want a lot of upkeep [Music] besides a good location they wanted a modern home with a touch of luxury but they knew what they could afford to pay and so they looked and looked and looked but nothing seemed quite right here they are the day of our barbecue out following up another lead look for another sign honey we must be near waverly hills now i am oh isn't that a lovely house signed honey i know jim but that's just the kind of house we won hey what that's it that's the house it's the waverly hills model house see the sign isn't it wonderful jim i have a feeling that this is going to be it isn't beautiful how do you do may i help you folks my name is ally i'm jim miller we'd just like to look through the house we're admiring the house on the way up the walk i just love the brick thank you i'm so glad you did we just sit down we've had so many favorable comments in the attractive brick exteriors of these houses all the houses in this entire area are going to be built a brick then for variety we'll use different types depending upon what the buyer wants you mean like a light red brick for one house and the dark red for the one next door that's right or we'll vary the size or texture of the brick that we use you know you'd be amazed at the variety of brick that is available today i didn't realize there were so many different kinds it's interesting isn't it sure is but mr ellen a house is a big investment do you think i'd really be wise in selecting brick you certainly would be a house is an investment we know that you want it to be sound that's why we're building with brick we've used other materials and other developments but they just don't give the same lasting satisfaction don't sell us fast either people prefer brick they ask for it and that's why we're building with it well that's more expensive though isn't it no it is not not in the long run your initial investment may be a little bit higher but well we have some facts on a chart over here would you care to see it compare the costs and you'll buy brick lower upkeep no painting that's for me lower insurance rates reduced heating costs cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter money in your pocket dollar per dollar you do get more with brick why three years from now when the less durable house is starting to show its age a brick home will have returned to you at slight added initial cost of three to five percent and from then on you save money that's interesting and another thing to remember whatever type of exterior wall you pick approximately 85 percent of your cost will be spent on the inside and the roof now that means only 15 for the outside wall but take it away and you haven't even got a house now doesn't it pay to pick the best building material brick so that you have permanent protection for that 85 percent you're going to have to spend anyway well if you look at it that way you really can't afford not to use brake that's right you know what we call the exterior wall the vital 15 and you can see why well that's very interesting mr allen frankly i always knew that brick was permanent but i never realized before how economical it really is although i wonder isn't a brick interior wall like this pretty expensive so beautiful it must be expensive well there i'm happy to say you're both wrong as a matter of fact nearly everybody can afford a beautiful brick wall like that in their home mr allen is right the imaginative use of brick within the home is within the reach of almost every prospective buyer today you see builders with vision have brought back the brick fireplace as the center of family living the heart of the home and because they are modern and favor rugged textures and natural materials they're using brick burned clay from the earth in threw a ball on your roof see he isn't going to bite you what's he got there parakeets the gentleman says he found bobby's ball say this is a nice place nice parakeets too turns out the gentleman's an architect not only that but it seems he designed the new waverly hills school that'll be bobby's school in another year all brick too the architect tells jim that he actually specializes in brick he explains that outside of the fact that brick is durable it also has a unique quality of warmth mainly it's the texture that does it and he tells jim that the use of brick can make even the most modern functional building actually glow with life pretty soon it's time to leave jim explains that he and sally have an appointment with a brick salesman later in the afternoon [Music] now here's a tri-level home of colonial brick now mr and mrs miller i think that you've actually seen here some very attractive brick homes in this area and you've seen for yourself that by the merry change of one brick to another the entire exterior appearance of the home is changed considerably now let's be a little more specific and let me show you some of the brick from which you may make a selection for your home now displayed here are the brick of the leading brick manufacturers we represent as a brick dealer now here we have a lot of color ranges sizes and textures let's look at this first thing which is a norman size it's a long 12-inch unit it's a standard brick height actually it's a beautiful unit to use in emphasizing that horizontal line in your home now let's take a look at something quite different from that this is a standard size unit in a wide range of colors ranging from the dark reds to the medium reds into the blacks and to the light greens now let's take a look at this one and so mr fisher shows jim and sally samples of many different textures sizes and colors of brick he explains that their selection should be made with an eye to the individual personality of their home the design of the house and their own particular tastes with his help they work out the ideal combination of color texture and masonry bond and from samples like these and many others they select the brick for their home [Music] now i think that the decision that you've made both for the exterior brick and for that beautiful living room wall and exposed fireplace that you're planning on is a terrific one i'll tell you what i'll do i'll check with the contractor notify him of your decision and check with him on the delivery date well i think jim and i are faced with some pretty important decisions but i'm sure we've made the right one today and we'll be quite happy i've been noticing the pictures you have here mr fisher do they represent the various stages in the manufacturer brick i've never been in a brick plant before but these look pretty interesting well actually it is quite interesting and if you've got a few moments i'd like to explain them to you in more detail i think that would be nice well fine and so mr fisher explains to jim and sally that this is a drawing of the first step in the manufacturing process shale or clay being taken from the earth by power shuttles sometimes dynamite is needed to dislodge the raw material which is then loaded on trucks and taken to the plant to be crushed and blended [Music] automatic conveyor belts then deliver it into grinders which reduce the raw material to a flower-like fineness after which it passes over vibrating screens which allow only the finest particles to go through the fine powery material is mixed with water in what the manufacturers call the pug mill so that it will be plastic enough for forming generally there are three methods of forming bread the stiff mud process the soft mud process and hand molding all three resulting in top quality brick products the stiff mud process is like squeezing toothpaste through a tube the raw material is forced through a forming dye after which it's cut by a machine something like a giant egg slicer before cutting textures are mechanically applied to the faces of the column varying from a smooth finish to the ruggedness of the bark of a tree [Music] a conveyor belt separates the cut brick and delivers it to the off bearers who skillfully place it on cars ready for the dryers as you can see these brick are cored many types however are not but as we said before there is more than one method of forming brick the soft mud process is used in producing the beautiful colonial type of brick here the raw material from the pug mill is compressed into wooden moles and deposited on pallets ready for firing many desirable architectural effects can only be obtained from handmade brick here within modern highly automated plants the art of brick making has practiced since ancient times has still survived working with prepared material craftsmen produce styles typical of williamsburg monticello or independence hall in addition to many decorative shapes after the brick have been formed whether by stiff mud soft mud or hand molding process they are loaded on cars which travel through dryers whereby heat and controlled air circulation the excess water is removed the unburned brick is still a long way from the finished product its next most dramatic step lies ahead the firing two kinds of kills are used the tunnel kill and what is known as the beehive or periodic type of kill in the beehive kill where the capacity varies from 40 000 to 90 000 brick the firing which determines the permanence durability and color of the finished product may last from five to six days coal gas or oil are used for fuel [Music] the unburned brick enters the tunnel kill on cars and travels at automatically controlled speeds through varying heat zones for 24 hours [Music] experienced engineers control the entire firing operation precision instruments and temperature gauges provide a constant check and control on the progress of the cars through the kill the most modern facilities are used to ensure uniform quality in the finished product here at temperatures often exceeding 2000 degrees the thousands of particles which make up a single brick are welded together for all time [Music] as the fired brick is removed from the kill constant checking continues for quality and uniformity meanwhile the brick will be sorted into proper color ranges preparatory to being shipped and so only a few days after the raw material was taken from the earth the finished brick is ready to be delivered by rail or truck to construction sites in every part of the country but in this case more specifically to the miller home now it's just a matter of time before the miller's dream becomes reality talking to the workmen and bricklayers they learn about the skill and experience that go into building their home [Music] this is an exciting time all right every spare minute they can find they pop bobby into the car and drive out to see how the house is coming along seems like it will never be finished hello well that's great well we'd love to you think it's going to snow oh that's swell well we'll see you saturday night okay thanks a lot that was sure was a lot of fun i told you the next one well now just wait a minute you're forgetting all those barbecues you gave this summer i guess you forgot about that invitation you know that's one thing seriously though that i like about this kind of living no engraved invitations necessary emily and i used our patio an awful lot last summer did a good deal of entertaining it always seemed to be much more fun outside but i really admired jim building his own barbecue he did a pretty good job too yes the millers are really on their way families expanding makes the future seem a lot clearer too because you know you've got something really lasting and believe me there's nothing like a sound attractive brick home to give you peace of mind about the future i feel that way i think you notice a lot of things once you have a brick home all around you you notice the exciting new ways that brick is used today like the way it helps merge outdoor and indoor spaces or contrasts with smoother plain durable and a sounder investment and always you're conscious of brick as the material from which america builds its homes all over the land large homes and small traditional and modern as the man who owns one i can tell you that the owner of a brick home intended owner proud that his home reflects his own success and good judgment glad that he can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing
